I don't see it mentioned in the synopses, but a friend who watched it in Japan just blurted that out to me and I was surprised to hear it. And there's a post in page one of this thread that also mentions that openly.

Just want to know if it's a story element that becomes clear early on, or if it's supposed to be a big twist.

If something isn't mentioned in a synopsis, what's your immediate reaction on the 'clear early on' vs. 'a big twist' argument? I'll give you one guess.

It's a twist but it's not like an ending twist that just completely spoils the ending if that's what you're thinking. It's just a nice reveal and then the story continues along.

Geez, almost a year since it originally released. With it being such a big hit I wonder why they waited so long to bring it over?

Just got back from the theatre and I have to say I can see why Your Name won so many awards. That was absolutely amazing and incredibly beautiful. I was enthralled throughout the entire story and by the time
the big twist involving time travel happened I was completely shocked and my attention was 100% on the screen. By the end of the film I just had tears in my eyes hoping Mitsuha survived and that she and Taki would end up together again
.

All in all, great film. 10/10. I watched the Japanese Subtitled version and I really want to rewatch it again, but in English so I can experience it twice.

I was reminded this was releasing today in another thread, and ordered online at a small theater 30 minutes from where I live. It starts in less than an hour, LOL.

I'm going Saturday night with my sister. It'll at least be a treat to see the gorgeous art Shinkai provides with his works up on the big screen. I'm skeptical story wise though, never found any of his writing all that interesting.

Just got back from the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. It was a great movie. It basically keeps you watching through the whole thing. It looks really nice too, the colors really pop and it has a very clean look.

I found it hilarious how he still was fondling her tits even when he was crying. The whole theater was laughing at it.

I personally watched the Subtitled version and Funimation did a really great job with them. They even had a TL Note at one point during the beginning to explain a joke that would have been impossible to translate which caused everybody in the theatre to burst out laughing.

I'd seen the movie previously in pretty poor quality but seeing it on the big screen finally was a real treat. I got all choked up again in the theatre too.

I loved​ the slice of life feel of the movie and the incredible attention to details. Highly recommended to all (you don't have to be into manga/anime to like it).

So how does the dub treat the honorific jokes? I'd like to see it again with a friend and I'm wondering how that plays.

Yep. Granted they probably could have found a way around the TL Note if they took some liberties, but I don't think it would have had the same effect and given how everybody burst out laughing in the theatre they did a good job by choosing to go the TL Note route

I think this is as wide as its going to get. I just looked on the Cineplex Website to see if I could get tickets to the english version so I could do both and it looks like they were only showing Your Name today in a single theatre here. Now I wait for Funimation to release a Blu Ray with both languages upon which I will buy the hell out of it

They changed it then? They only had 'I' and the Japanese words written in romaji in () behind it when I watched it in February in Japan.

Well then, I guess my only option is to wait for the digital download/blu-ray. I'm assuming there still isn't a date for that.

The way it was for us was they put
"I (Watashi)" with a TL note above it that said "[Feminine expression]" (or something close that, I forget the exact wording they used). They did that for the entire joke as she went through all the different ways of referring to herself as Taki

I updated my post with the exact phrasing. Either way it worked considering how much everyone in the theatre laughed.

All in all the film was an amazing experience in theatres with a bunch of anime fans. I only wish more anime films made their way over because it was fun as hell.

edit - did my own reasearch and it looks like multiple theaters in Boston are airing it, as well as a theater in Kingston.

Just saw it in theaters. Can't believe it finally happened after waiting for so long.

I was kind of let down, honestly. This movie definitely got too much hype.

Ah okay, having seen it dubbed (they were only offering subtitled at 10 tonight and we couldn't make it) they struggled with that scene. They ultimately did okay, and conveyed the same meaning, but it wasn't as funny. Granted, only five people total showed up to my screening, so its not like there was much of an audience to burst out laughing anyway.

I saw it with my Father and Wife. All three of us thought it was good/fine. I thought the two leads voiced both characters really well and managed to easily convey/make you believe they were the other in the opposite body. The rest of the cast was pretty good too. I think I'd say it's on par with some of the better Ghibli film dubs. That's my opinion anyway.

I'm trying to remember exactly. I mean it's very much the same sort of thing, Mitsuha struggling to figure out how to refer to herself/himself, but doesn't really land quite as well because we'd just say "me" or "I'm." I asked my wife, who remembers it better than I did. Mitsuha tries to say something like "a guy just wants to have fun." but stumbles and says "a girl, a gal, etc." I mean, i don't fault them because that seems ridiculously hard to translate, but yeah, gets the point across but feels unmemorable.

Yeah we were having a discussion in the car on the way home because our theater just had five people (including myself, my father and my wife.) Now, maybe it's because the majority of people were waiting for the sub showing at 10pm (then again that's still a small crowd seeing as tickets weren't even sold out.) but it really feels like the American viewing public is that one friend who keeps throwing you suggestions for things to watch. So you do, and you enjoy them. Then you try and offer him a suggestion in return and he's like "That's nice." and never watches it.

Edit: Also, of those five? One lady came in five minutes late. Another guy came in who knows how long into the movie and then left twenty minutes before the ending. o_O

My sub showing was pretty empty although it was 2:30 show. Shin Godzilla and the last DBZ "film" were way more packed when I went.
