The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

He posted a photo twice to the Slayer Instagram of the band Photoshopped with Donald Trump, whined about it being removed the first time, called fans that weren't to pleased "special snowflakes" then also made a joke about Mike Pence turning fruits into vegetables before wrapping it all up in saying he was just doing it to upset people.

Thought about trying to go see Slayer this year but I'll pass and go watch Exodus instead

I think it is pretty fantastic. It is the opener of his new album and features a lot of fantastic vocalists kicking ass (Hansi Kurch, Floor Jansen, Russel Allen, Tommy Karevik, James Labrie etc.).

And I love they way Arjen did the commentary in this vid. Fuck jumpy, ugly lyric videos, all bands should do this.

That was absolutely stunning. I'm so excited for this album!

Well Araya is the one who writes the serial killer lyrics, so not much of a stretch to also be interested in Trump. And he's religious despite being in fucking Slayer, so i guess it's not that strange that this Hispanic immigrant supports Trump.

The Day That The World Breaks Down is an appropriate title for a song released this week.

Love it, and yes, enjoyed the commentary, great insight.

Sorry if this is throwing off the thread but what I want to ask isn't thread worthy and this is the most appropriate thread I could find:

I was watching the documentary Until The Light Takes Us yesterday. There is a part where Frost is doing some kind of stage performance and then out of nowhere jams a knife into his arm. rides up with it all the way to his elbow area. Then he proceeds to cut pretty damn deep on the side of his neck. Uh, I don't have any expertise in self harm but holy shit how is he alive? That looked like some massive cuts. I guess to kill yourself with cutting you have to go really hardcore because what I saw was utterly gruesome and the man is still with us. Crazy.

Watched that part again, and it seems pretty fake to me. Especially the way the blood spurts out from his hand. I do have some expertise on the matter. ;)

I have an art degree with a focus in performance art and did performances with self mutilation on a pretty regular basis for about 8 months. If you are careful and know what you are doing your body is a pretty hearty canvas. As a father and husband now I stay away from it (and it sucks because it was my primary form of self expression,) and am constantly searching for something as personally satisfying. That said I got an academic degree with it as my main focus so I was always kind of proud of that.

Also not to be to critical of Frost but his performance was a bit... on the nose. Black Metal and stuff is naturally pretty on the nose but once you get into a different kind of art space just seeming kind of angry is a little overdone. I am all for self expression though.

Frost is pretty much the peak of black metal drumming but yeah, his "performance art" was dumb bullshit

I might argue that dude from Mgla is my personal favorite BM drummer. His drumming adds so much to those songs. I also hesitate to call anyone's art dumb bullshit, I just think it was a little on the nose is all. I was in an academic setting so I had to write pages and pages about why I was doing what I was doing, and justify it to a board who was VERY uncomfortable with what I was doing. My department itself was very supportive and in the end it worked out, but having to really dive into your work like that helps you feel comfortable defending it. I don't know for sure certainly, but at least from what they show in that movie Frosts work did not necessarily strike me as super meaningful. Maybe a little more like "Oh your willing to do this!? Maybe we can get people to show up to our studio." I could be completely wrong though. That said if it was fake then that is IMO relatively useless as an artistic statement, unless what he was trying to tell people was that there was something fake about the ideas he was trying to invoke.

Agreed. It definitely lacked subtlety and nuance. The performance also seemed pretty lame in comparison to something like the Aesthetic Meat Front has done.

There's a variety of things you can do with and to your body. Extreme Bodies -- The Use and Abuse of the Body in Art is a good book about the subject. Personally, I haven't really practised such things in nearly five years, after I burnt an omega sign to my chest, apart from one performance four years ago, where I cut an X to my forehead with a scalpel. In the late 90's, I cut myself twice so bad in the heat of the moment, that I still have nerve damage in my right arm.

Sorry about the nerve damage :( , sacrifice can make great art though. I have a torn up lung from swallowing paint and throwing it up. I knew it would happen and it was part of the work but horrible pneumonia bouts 10 years later still suck. All under control now but I no doubt took some years of my life. Again, family changed some of this stuff.

Sorry to hear about the pneumonia as well. I've gotten used to the effects of nerve damage during the years; how a cold weather affects the fingers, how some tasks and games can be a bit more demanding than they were before, and how I feel pain in a different finger than I've hurt while doing something. Sacrifice, and a real sense of danger, certainly can make art more effective. I'm 41 now, and at my age you start to think about the consequences more, and I wouldn't want to lose the ability to do something I love.

I am so disheartened by seeing how much support Trump gets from both metal artists and the thousands of comments of Blabbermouth.net

I though Metal was always about sticking to the man, and no one out there wants to stick it to you more than Trump.

Maybe I'm just gullible.

I used to browse Blabbermouth daily for years. The community became very hostile over the time. Haven't visited the site for a long long time. It's just the same with Metalsucks.

There seems to be some sympathy for him in certain BM circles, which is puzzling considering his conservative and religious stances and staff. I guess all of that goes out of the window, when it's all about the refugees issue to some.

On a side note, that reminded me of what a friend of mine likes to call NSBM, Not Satanic Black Metal. ;)

So back in 2011 I went to see Iron Maiden in Tampa and got a floor ticket for $75.80 including fees.

Now they're wanting $118.80 with fees.

Rude (CA) - Remnants...

I posted these guys debut LP a while back, and I commended them for attempting to capture the seldom successfully emulated Florida sound. Their sophomore full-length came out just yesterday, and it improves on the former album in absolutely every way. OSDM worship done right, can't recommend this one enough. Once again a very accurate Morbid Angel-esque production and huge Autopsy vibes which is a plus. Super tight performances, van Drunen vocals to a tee, Dan Seagrave. This album rules.

Perfect 90's death metal worship. Production is fucking spot on haha. Loving the Seagrave worship in here too.

Well, that's the unfortunate thing. Some people see voting for Trump as some sort of rebellious act.

Yeah, been a metalhead all my life but unfortunately it's still very Confederate Flag Dimebag and 80s Reagan era when it comes to political leanings.

That new Kreator album might be their best work in ages. Really solid on my first listen. Maybe a couple of fillers there in the end, but nothing too bad.

Man, I am afraid to read it due to me being squeamish.

Ick. Such a sad notion.

Nicely surprised with new Kreator album, I was expecting a mediocre crap after both singles, but album as whole really clicked with me. Need to hear some of it live.

I've never understood how you could be a metalhead and be very conservative. Most of my friends into metal are fairly liberal and I've always viewed metal and rock for the most part to lean towards more liberal values.

Anyways new Mastodon sounds great and their new album is easily my anticipated of the year.

Also got Iron Maiden and Ghost tickets to see them in June in the Twin Cities, haven't seen either live before so I'm pretty excited about that.

Yeah, Metal is highly counter-culture, unless your idea of Metal is shit like Poison.

That is silly, Metal does not have to adhere to any belief, that is like saying "wow, Christian Metal, who would have thunk of that" it is a narrow-minded point of view. Even more narrow-minded to assume that you cannot enjoy metal if you are a conservative

There are unfortunately a bunch of douchebags representing metal who hold stupid beliefs, James Hetfield being one of them. Does not make their music any less pure

Though some genres of metal can be sided one way over the other, thrash metal has very much survived on being that way. Though sometimes I would prefer less "preachy" lyrics from thrash bands, unless that band is Nuclear Assault
