Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Body shift:

SoupyShimmeringCaiman.gif

That is so cool. I just recently listened to the Hardcore History 'Wrath of the Khans' podcast series and he mentions that Mongol riders would shift positions on their horses to enable them to fire behind and even side-mounted.

Noice! I like as little HUD as possible without hampering the experience in SP games.

I specifically said it iterates and that there's nothing wrong with that.

I agree that it would and should borrow from The Witcher as well, as it should from Bethesda games, Monster Hunter, etc.

But the structure of progressing through the world is very Ubisoft-like, which I consider a positive. If they take that structure, add in Witcher style interaction, Monster Hunter style combat and so in, it could be great.

How is the progression Ubisoft like? You mean it's mission structure? It's map layout?

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with being inspired by Ubisoft games. dying light is inspired by Far Cry and it's one of my favorite games. My issue is more about how it simply isn't accurate to describe this game as such whether it's used as a positive or as a way to downplay. Having played the demo the game feels like Tomb Raider Witcher and Skyrim more than Far Cry. The aesthetic of the menus and crafting system is def Far Cry inspired.

Oh man. Am I the only one who thinks Aloy is really, really attractive?
This is a weird post, considering the GIF is way too dark and the camera is positioned away from her face. :p

But no, of course not. I find Aloy pretty attractive as well, quite surprised to see a few think she's ugly, to be honest.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Maybe he's really attracted to flexible archers who know their way around a horse.

That would be something new, LOL. :p

haha well that shouldn't be new but grats to GG for innovating lol. I do find her pretty and she had the build to go with it. We've already seen those hips don't lie gifs but there's just something about the way she straddles that hunk of metal lol

Several people were criticizing the exposed midriff outfit shown at the PS4 Pro event, but I don't know, I find it...... hot?

Can somebody explain the comparison with Ubisoft games? The only similarity I've seen so far is the Tallneck being used to clear the "fog of war" and reveal the map. Oh, and the climbing, I guess, but that's unfair because it's not like it's an integral part of the gameplay.

For the reasons that I mentioned, that's why I mentioned them.
"them"

"I was wondering if they were maybe keeping it a secret and it would just seem out of place if all they were was autonomous walking platforms. It would just feel out of place with everything else that we're seen in the world."

All you said was that it wouldn't go with what we've seen. I'm asking for you to elaborate. I'm not sure why you're being snarky lol.

If it is that much of a bother, forget it.

Makes no sense to me either.

For the very reason that you've just quoted.
I was wondering if they were maybe keeping it a secret and it would just seem out of place if all they were was autonomous walking platforms. It would just feel out of place with everything else that we're seen in the world.
At the moment they're no more than a moving tower, they are the only entities in the game to have been shown acting in such a way. Hence them seeming out of place in comparison to the other entities which don't act in that way.

With all the recent footage that includes them they've been shown to follow a set path and even seem to have pre-defined launch points for people to start their ascent. No other entities in the game have been shown to do that, Guerrilla have specifically talked about them wanting ensure that all the entities in the game to behave like real living animals.

Nothing in the gameplay they've shown from these preview events suggests that they are anything but a moving tower on a train track which lead directly into my question of...
I did ask a couple of days ago and that it hadn't been confirmed yet but I'm ask again incase that's changed. Has there been confirmation wither way about entities like Tallnecks and whether you attack them, or vice versa?

I do get the feeling that it's not going to happen but it will seem strange if they're complete completely invulnerable.
I don't understand why you're quoting me and telling me...
Every robot doesn't need to be aggressive/threatening.
...when that has nothing at all to do with anything that I've said in this thread.

There's nothing snarky about what I'm saying, it's just that I'm not sure why you felt the need to quote me but seemingly answer something that somebody else may have said then keep going on about it?

How is the climbing even similar lol. The game is 3rd person and FarCry is 1st lol

I interviewed her a few times for my internship, fun.

ontopic: Does the constant monologue bother anyone else? I find it super hard to watch the gameplay with Aloy talking through almost everything.

Similar menus to Far Cry Primal
Ubi towers

What other Ubi soft things in Horizon? I'm just curious..

I only played and finished far cry 3 and Horizon videos don't remind me of it.

The guy last page said stuff lik collecting materials and skill tress, but those are hardly Ubisoft inventions.

People ALWAYS forget, that the boards in TW3 are basically towers. And in TW3 you also free villages from monsters and destroy tons of monster nests.

What makes people not compare it to TW3 is simply the look of the game. Horizon has a somewhat similar color palette with FC Primal, and the menus are kinda alike. But that's it.

I have a problem with these Ubisoft comparisons, simply because it comes with a negative connotation.

The thing is, TW3 had actual meaty sidequests, with actual stories/characters involved that made you give a damn about doing them.

ubisoft games come no where close to offering the variety or depth that the side-content in TW3 did.

Hopefully Horizons leans more toward the rpg elements in that regard.

W3s writing was able to mask a lot of open world elements in the game that people claim to dislike. good writing just goes a long way.

THe main character sure does talk a lot. After every single action, she has at least 2 or three comments to say about it. It's kind of annoying.

I don't know about Ubisoft but watching the gameplay videos it looks like a lot of the gameplay mechanics/loop has been lifted wholesale from Shadow of Mordor and then given a new lick of paint.

Mordor was fun initially but the repetition set in pretty quickly and from the Horizon videos I'm getting a similar vibe.

It looks good but I'll likely pick it up for next to nothing much later rather than at release.

Can you elaborate? What exactly is like Mordor? Also previews talk about the variety, and strong story characters, which make it not like mordor, at all. Combat is also nothing like mordor.

That's not an excuse. I'm just saying Witcher 3 has a lot of "Ubisoft elements" that people don't realize or criticize as much because of the writing/presentation package those elements came in

personally I don't care if Horizon has those elements as long as it finds a way to stay fun

Aloy's original design concepts look like weird pseudo anime characters.

I approve, but i'm happy with the realistic interpretation we got in the end.

Still it makes me wonder how the game might have looked in a more stylized cel shaded type animation style.

I just commented cause i was browsing a specific Japanese site on an article about Aloy's original concept art and half the comments were that she looked 'way cuter' there, and the other half were criticizing those guys for caring about moe in a realistic western game.

Some of these are valid, however:

Bow combat is barely the focus of Shadow of Mordor. It's mostly melee focused though.

Horizon doesn't have "Weapon skill trees", it just has talent trees which have been in games since at least the PS2 era.

I'm assuming that the environment collectibles you're referring to are the crafting materials you pick up? If so, that's been a thing since MMOs started.

Focus mode in this game seems a lot more interesting than in other games. In Horizon is also functions as an almost Final Fantasy style Scan ability as well as giving much more information for stealth gameplay, with being able to see an enemies patrol path.

Other than that, the only similarity I'd give it to Shadow of Mordor, ignoring everything else that is literally something you find in video games in general, is the beast riding. The taming mechanic is actually very similar to Mordors branding mechanic for controlling monsters and orcs, though in Horizon at least, it appears that there's much more variety to be had with the different things you can take control of.

Oh God can we go back to "it looks like Far Cry " pls lol
