Where will the Nintendo Switch live in your TV unit / Setup?

So I've been thinking about this. All of my current consoles are generally horizontal and fit very well in the Ikea Besta unit I have, The Switch needs to have a lot of space above it to dock into.

Where is everyone planning to keep theirs? It won't fit in one of the holes in my unit, nor can it go on top as the TV has quite low feet so it will be in the way of the picture. My only option is going to be slightly behind the TV possibly.

Curious if anyone else has thought about this.

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
The dock will go right next to my PS4 Pro and Xbox One S. The Switch will be next to my bed, as I will mostly use it in handheld mode.

Downstairs on My big TV so that with party games everyone can play with it. And when I want some me time I'll just switch on upstairs in my room. I don't think I'll get a dock for the tv in my room tho. I have zero room.

My situation is similar OP.

This is what I've been unsure about lately too. It makes sense to go on the TV stand possibly sat behind the TV (also have a low stand and if it went infront it would block some of the TV), but our kitten always jumps back there and likes to bite analog sticks after discovering if he bites my Elite controller sticks he can pull them off then bash them around the floor.

Problem is I don't think there's enough room in the unit itself to be able to place the Switch unit into the dock from above.

I wanna say replacing my Wii U, but I'm really torn with what to do with it.

I don't really need the money, so I'm not that arsed about selling it - I'm wondering if it's worth keeping hold off in case they ever become 'sought after?'

Anyone else facing a similar dilemma?

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
I guess I will have to sit it in from of my TV for it to function properly. I am not really interested in it being portable as that has no real use for me. (never really thought about it until now. I guess I could put it in the WiiU spot since I won't be removing the portable part). Not getting one until there are more games though, so maybe I will get a new TV stand by that time. Maybe next year.

What is it about Nintendo fans that makes them so touchy and defensive? Christ.

Anyway, on topic: I'm not gonna get a Switch until later in the year, but there's already a spot for it right next to my Wii U in my set up. That's right, my Wii U is going nowhere, that machine brings me too much joy.

Good question.

Hmm, I don't have any space left so I'd say behind the TV. Dock and handheld because I will probably never use it as handheld anyway.

When in doubt, if you don't absolutely have to, never sell a console. (IMO.)

Been thinking about this. Honestly no idea. Without a horizontal move I have a feeling people are going to have to get creative. It's one of a handful of design oversights I think Nintendo will fix eventually with a redesign late on which makes me hesitant to pick up the switch right away.

not in/on my TV unit as there's no space next to the TV and the height of my unit and the shelves leaves no room to actually click the switch in to the dock, unless I remove it from the shelf each time.

Will likely go on a bookshelf not too far away from my sofa and i'll run a hdmi cable around the back of it and to the TV.

Horizontal mode in my TV stand. There is no reason you can't lay down the dock such that you can pull the Switch out, the dock is just a plastic holder, no need for it to be vertical.

I don't have a TV, so I will put the dock on the side of my desk. Will mostly play it on handeld mode in my bed and connect it to my laptop if I want TV mode.

You must be new to switch threads lol. It's almost a safe bet.

It's like going in to a Horizon/Zelda thread and expecting to not see the world Zelda/Horizon in the thread opposite of the game talked about of the two.

On topic: I'm looking at my entertainment stand right now. I was going to set it in front or behind the TV originally. I think i have enough space to pull it out from the middle shelf if it's as small as everyone says it is. I'll just move my 360 down a shelf and put the switch there.

Entertainment cabinet, with my other consoles. Do we know if the home screen (OS) uses pointer controls? If so do those pointer controls need to see the unit. I seem to recall people in the past saying the switch itself could act as a wii sensor bar. And if that's the case then it maybe moved to under my TV.

Still not sure on whether I'd like it in my room with the smaller 1080p TV but have the option to play it privately and in bed, or hooked up to the 4K TV in the movie room. I guess the beauty of the Switch means I can theoretically do both! I don't know how Zelda will look on the 4K display. I'll have to do some research on the quality of the 4K TV's upscaler I suppose.

I have 3 Ikea 2 x 2 Units on the wall in an backwards L shape where I house all my old systems and new ones, I was actually thinking about this the other day. I guess i'm going to have to move the Wii U next to the Wii, which itself already has a Gamecube next to it. Problem is where do I then put the Wii U Gamepad, as well as the big external HDD for it

Either way i'm going to have to mess around with a bunch of wires

I'm putting it right where the Wii U pad/charger used to be. Takes up about the same amount of space, it should work out well.

I keep not thinking about this, because I know I'm going to have to rip out my entire AV setup and start again. It's pretty much vertically stacked, with little free space that isn't in front of the TV.

It'll be fine when I do it, but I'll probably play Zelda with the Switch on the floor, then figure it out afterwards.

I'm in a bad spot when it comes to answering this question. The unit my TV sits on is a Besta Burs TV Bench, from IKEA, and my 2year old can already reach to the back of it no problem. He swings the TV back and forth and we have to tell him no. Since Ninty hasn't said anything about the potential for a horizontal orientation I am really not sure how to hide it from him. Putting it behind the TV itself may help but he can still reach back there somewhat and by doing that i've also diminished the value of the docking/undocking...

Not sure yet as my TV extends past the edges of my media console and I don't want to have to reach behind my TV every time I want to use it. I also don't want to have to pull the dock out from the shelf underneath to take out the system or Joy-Con...

Hmmm...

I'm keeping the Wii U. The Wii U can play both my Wii U and Wii catalog of games, while the Switch can not.

Like most people, I guess it'll just replace the Wii U and the Wii U pad dock on the TV unit, or just on top beside the TV. I had t gave it much thought I guess, but it's only about 10cm tall right, and then maybe 2 or 3 more when the switch is sticking out the top? My cordless phone on its dock at the other side of the TV is taller than that so I don't think it'll be much of an issue for us either way.

So yeah this is the only legit negative thread of the Switch for me.

I'm still holding out for the possibility that it does allow horizontal mode.

Because it's made in such a way that you can have the cables protrude at the back or at the side, and if it only allowed vertical then this seems like a slightly superfluous feature.

If not, my TV cabinet has two main flat shelves for the entertainment centers and two larger compartments on the side containing junk and cameras and stuff. I can clean out one probably and put it there, but then I need to find other space for my junk and it's weird to have one console away from the rest.

Or it may fit and it just becomes an annoying hustle in a small space everytime I switch

I hypothesized that the reason cables were able to be directed out the side was for flush to the wall vertical orientation but you raise a good point. I mean what factors, of those we know, would prevent the horizontal orientation?

My Wii U currently stands at the place of the Nintendo Switch. Not sure if I will put the Wii U back in its box once I receive the new system, I don't play much more than Super Mario Maker these days (and hopefully that game will receive a port on Nintendo Switch).

Has the dock's stability/sturdiness been addressed? I'm pretty nervous that someone might accidentally knock it over while the actual Switch is docked. Otherwise, I'm keeping it low or probably on the desk.

On top of my stand, sitting in front of my TV. The stand+Switch when it's docked is only about the height of a blu-ray case, so it'll only cover a tiny bit of the TV screen.

It's gotta be up there (and not in one of the little "cubby" areas where my PS4 and Wii U are) for docking!

I won't be using it as a portable so behind the tv. Heard but not seen.

Or something like that. If it has a noisy fan.

I´ll just place between the TV and the stand of the WiiU gamepad, or maybe at the other side of the TV. I´ll leave the WiiU connected as long as there are games I want to play on it.

It's taking the Wii U's place next to the NES mini. The Wii U is going on the basement tv next to the PS3 and vanilla PS4.

Funnily enough, mine will be going on the bookshelf next to my entertainment setup. Have to put it somewhere that I can slot the unit into the top of the dock, and I'm not keen on having the dock lying sideways. :p

There's no fan on the back apparently and resting the Switch on its backside seems to even lower the chance of scratches. The only thing that's unclear is whether you can take off the joycons easily without gravity keeping the Switch down.

I was thinking about making/buying a plinth which the Switch could stand on by itself. Wire the cables under the floorboards etc so they don't get in my way.
