What pivotal role? If you took Luna out of the story and scrubbed the lore clean of any mention of an Oracle at all, nothing would've changed.
If he's willing to lay claim to the results of that, Tabata is a bad director.
I can't give him credit for the concept or idea, since those were more or less the product of Nomura and Kojima. He says himself it was intentional to tell the story that way. I think FFXV's storytelling was absolutely terrible.
Why does Square Enix struggle to tell a solid and thematically consistent story now. Ever since they introduced voice acting into the series the mellow drama got turned up to 11. Like contract a fucking seasoned drama or adventure writer maybe, something, anything!
Does he explain why Type-0 had a similarly poorly told mess of a story?
I don't buy this bullshit. I really don't think Tabata knows how to tell a good story.
Really? You can do that for a lot of FF characters too. However, I again say that Luna was pivotal to the story.in KG, she risked her life to bring the ring out of the city. She's the one waking the Astrals so Noctis would be strong enough to fight against the Empire. She continues to correspond to Noctis in a way that gave him hope that his future wasn't a complete mess. She's healing the sick. And she proves to be key to Ardyn's twisted plan: Her death accelerates the Starscourge and completely unhinges Noctis
There's enough there alone to show her importance to the story. She would definitely benefit from her own DLC or even 30 or so minutes of added cutscenes just around her.
We didnt want to create a comprehensive and perfectly balanced story in this game.
Tabata coming out with a lot of clever excuses.
Your game is a disappointment to me and many fans.
I still haven't started my copy of FFXV. Is the story at least better than XIII's nonsense?
I at least hope the characters are better motivated and less whiny.

The story is shit and as more time passes the more I find the game being the worst in the franchise.
Tabby-san is the Wimp Lo of Squeenix. So they purposefully made it wrong? As a joke?
Been kinda out of the loop on FFXV; not gonna start until all the patches come out at this rate. Just what about it is so disappointing? I've heard the characters (the main gang that is) have good dynamics, but that the story is somehow even worse than XIII's? Does the gameplay not hold up?

Everything happens off-screen.
EVERYTHING.
Is the whole Leviathan thing from the trailers cut?
I like to think this is happening because people are hammering them over the story (through the recent survey as well)
Did you play 13? You sound like you didn't play 13.Well you did a fantastic job in creating one of the least interesting stories in the franchise despite such a solid foundation.
Perfectly valid narrative decision.
That leads to a boring and incomprehensible plot.
[...]I don't know howand neither does Noctis and I am fine with that. It makes more sense this way.Ignis went blind
The birth of a new Final Fantasy meme. After "HD towns are too hard." it's now: "We made the story shitty on purpose!"
I think most of us can agree on this. I enjoyed FFXV and was genuinely surprised by the combat system...but Tabata (and his story team) needs to stay away from the next FF story.
XV promising story concept was pretty much destroyed by the worst storytelling I've witnessed in a long while. Key plot points are revealed out of order and often in the dumbest way. Important characters are not given the proper screen time to form a connection with the player. The actions of the people in XV are often de-synced with the events happening around the world (i've never felt any true sense of an occupation, much less the aftermath of a brutal war).
But really it boils down to this: Telling a story purely from the protagonist's viewpoint is nothing new and definitely can work...i just don't think Tabata understands what it means or more importantly, have the capability to do so.
The gameplay is fine.
The story is just bits here and there with no direction whatsoever.
I dunno if I'd say it's fine. It's fun but it turns into a complete mess in tight spaces, against groups of enemies, against larger enemies (the adamantoise is the worst battle I've ever had in FF) and whenever you fight underneath trees.
A nightmare based on reality wrapped in a marketing stuntthen what is it that they are experiencing?
This certainly explains the team's earlier comments about having more scenes with young Luna and Noctis, as well as with Luna and Ravus, and not knowing where to insert them into the game.
I wonder if any of these scenes were cut to avoid bogging down the player w/ story before they got back to playing the game. We already know the Insomnia invasion was cut partially to get people into the open world as soon as possible.
It seems like it would be better to not respond to the criticism than to respond like this.
