Nintendo of America Issues Statement on Stolen Switch Systems

The funny thing about people saying not to worry about serial numbers is Nintendo is literally the inventor of the serial number registration and tracking systems that most electronics companies use today.

They're like the first company to not show a serial number to, lol

I remember being amazed calling in our GameCube for warranty repair in 2002 and the customer service guy rattled off exactly when and where we bought it.

They keep better track then law enforcement and guns.

I'm sure those thieves would be regretting their life choices, if they weren't being used as compost for Miyamoto's garden.

why would thieves sell hiphoprobot a switch at retail price?
Yeah thar was my question in the locked thread. I think HHR isn't telling us the whole truth. If he was involved in the theft indirectly than he deserves to be banned. His story was full of holes.

So, it's not a retail store shipping the console too early?

Of course not, no retailer is that stupid to send a switch 2 weeks early.

I want to know what HipHop paid.

I heard about $300.

Why did hiphoptherobot claim that it had been shipped to him early from a retailer?

Because he was lying and clearly knew that the Switch was hot, he's lucky that Nintendo just asked for the console back and just left it there.

Was he involved in the theft?

I doubt it as no-one would be stupid enough to steal a Switch and then upload it to youtube and doing a piss poor job of covering their track.

Oh I didn't know that about Nintendo.

Yeah, it doesn't add up.

Like I said in the locked thread, something was fishy. Lying about how you got it initially was a red flag. Doesn't seem like there is any legal action being taken place, just people getting fired. But they deserve it.

Don't justify stolen goods because it's Nintendo people.

I want to give people the benefit of the doubt, but there really is zero chance that you buy a console weeks before its release date and not think that it wasn't stolen or appropriated in a shady way.

Now I'm just waiting for someone on GAF to make a thread saying: "Well, I just lost my job at GameStop and I might be going to jail..."

If he knew it was stolen and was trying to sell it again on Reddit then that sounds extremely not legal.

With Nintendo being the Youtube takedown aficionados that they are, its suspect that the videos are still available on youtube. Promotion is promotion I guess.

Well damn...I take back what I said about Nintendos handling of the situation from the other thread. It's a damn shame that those already belong to people who preordered them.

You give people way too much credit. People gotta get that anonymous gaming community internet fame.

if i purchased it early i woulda kept my mouth shut

internet fame is not worth it

got what they deserved

Again...the person who made the videos because dumb shits on the internet begged him to and not to sell the console, was not one of the people in trouble. He was the one who bought it.

Obviously he was told to return it to not get in trouble and to help the investigation.

We don't know that though. We know that he wasn't honest about how he got it, and we know that he tried to sell at least one. Those are the facts as we know them.

I don't know, the hype train can lead people to do some pretty stupid shit.

Especially when you have a GAF thread full of hyped Nintendo fans egging you on to upload videos.

Hopefully hiphoptherobot is OK, he seems pretty calm in the other thread. He should get a compensation from wherever he bought it, though.

He bought a stolen Switch most likely from an individual. Highly doubt they're gonna give him a refund. Lol

So basically 1) a guerilla offshoot of Gamestop employees decided to snatch a few Switches off the back of a shipping truck and sell them at cost to a few dubious hypemen.

2) Fellow gaffer hiphoptherobot becomes embroiled in a quest to buy a Switch before launch by any means necessary and becomes intrigued by the offshoot's incredibly reasonable albiet totally illegal business dealings

3) Recieves a Switch from the guerilla unit and immidiately thinks about reselling the hot item for a higher cost to innocent people in account of misc bills being due. proceeds to label offshoot as "humble retailer" and post multiple advertising videos to the enjoyment of many a gaffer

4) Empire comes crumbling down due to exposure and average Nintendo employee checking trending reddit topics

He tried to sell one. On Reddit. And the everyone told him to keep it and upload videos. Then he had to return it and told us on GAF that he got it from someone who probably stole it.

If he was one of the employees who stole them he wouldn't have been on GAF all day answering questions.

Well if that's the case then like I said he got very lucky with Nintendo.

Though Nintendo was probably more interested in getting the system back and the person who sold the system to him.

Ha ha yeah, people were getting impatient and wanting to see the OS system.

Meanwhile I was "eh meh, I can wait."

Regarding the question of if Nintendo should "refund" HipHop for the price he paid on the stolen Switch unit:

The money that exchanged hands being refunded to HipHop is the responsibility of the person who sold HipHop the stolen Switch. Since the item was stolen, HipHop can go after said party (through legal means) to get his money back.

Legally it was HipHops responsibility to give back the Switch to its rightful owner (Nintendo) once it was brought to his attention that the Switch was stolen. For HipHop to be charged with a criminal offence, it would need to be proven that he/she knew the Switch was stolen when he/she purchased the unit. That is a gray area and it looks like Nintendo won't be pressing charges against HipHop, but the argument could be made that buying something two weeks before actual release from a non-retail source should be a big enough red flag to at least question the merits of how the item was obtained.

Makes the most sense.
