Nintendo of America Issues Statement on Stolen Switch Systems

Universal Access can be found under System Preferences
Wow, so hiphoprobot threw these guys straight under the bus for some internet fame. I mean they might have been caught eventually but he just gave them up.

They paid nothing for it, $300 profit straight up.

I think it's highly likely he would have known the people he was buying it from and where they worked, getting a new console ~2 weeks before it even launches should have set off alarm bells.

"They shipped it early bro"...yeah sure.

They got what they deserved and I can't say I feel bad for them but, yeah, anyone with any common sense would've known to keep quiet about something like this (not to protect the thieves but to protect themselves).

I mean as soon as those systems went online Nintendo probably knew exactly where those systems came from. Whoever stole this from their place of work is an idiot

At least we finally saw that UI...

Pretty much. Besides, whats the point going online when the digital store and most or all of the services are offline obviously because the system isn't out yet officially. Not smart.

So HipHop lied about where the system came from.

Knew it was more than likely stolen (considering the damn thing isnt eveb released)

Tried to offload the system on Reddit?

I'm not buying the whole 'innocent' thing. He knew what he was doing.

Pretty much. Be careful though, or you'll get accused of being on a witch hunt. You know, for looking down on thieves and all that.

There REALLY is a defence force for everything. Lol.

But I thought hiphop stole it himself since he tried to sell it on reddit

/s
yes, some posters came to that conclusion

We don't know that he didn't. He tried to sell one on reddit, and he lied about where he got it. That's all we know.

I still cant believe it took us to get to the point of theft just to see some more UI of a console coming out in 2 weeks.

Even worse are the people expecting a Switch that lost their console cause of this.

YEET! lol

Maybe the next person who gets something "early" will be smart enough not to share it with NeoGAF.

Nah, it's actually pretty easy.

- Take pictures of device/UI/whatever against as generic a background as possible (plus paper with "Hi GAF!" + the date)
- Blur any identifying marks like serials, bar codes, wifi signals detected by the console
- Scrub the photo's metadata
- If you are extra paranoid, put the photos/video on a clean laptop and travel to a public wifi hotspot for uploading
- PM everything to a mod to make a thread for you without being personally identified
- Again if you are extra paranoid, make a burner email address and email mods, or other members who could contact a mod for you, or even gaming news sites who might be likely to post them

When the manufacturer comes and tells the admins that the console is stolen, do you really think that GAF is going to protect you?

Yeah but according to the other thread, Nintendo should have let them keep the switch.
Out of touch as always
Err, didn't they just go after the (re)sellers? If they were after the people who purchased it, wouldn't hiphoptherobot be suddenly arrested or something?

You can't sign up for GAF with a burner.

You didn't even read my post...

You don't sign up for GAF, you just email someone.

I don't know if any mods have public email addresses, but some GAF members do. Others have links to their webpages or blogs which have contact information there.

From a public wifi hotspot, register supermysteriousperson23@hotmail.com, email someone cool to tell them what to PM a mod about it. Or again, probably just burner-email it to gonintendo and he'll post anything.

You've created a scenario where you go through a lot of trouble to put yourself at risk without even being able to enjoy the 15 minutes of fame that hiphop got. The reason people risk these things in the first place is so that they can bask in that recognition.

I saw this scenario play out on an episode of degrassi once. Never works.

Speak for yourself, I'd just want to get the info out in the wild for the benefit of others.

If you really want to engage with a community to enjoy the 15 minutes, make a burner reddit or twitter account then, still exclusively on public wifi (and preferably a clean laptop).

And you're not going through a lot of trouble to put yourself at risk. You're going through a lot of trouble in order to get it out there risk-free, that's the whole point of the steps I laid out.

So our hypothetical altruistic thief steals a console from his place of employment solely so that he can bring UI videos to the masses? I mean, okay. Sure.

I make no assumptions about how one would come by this console or game. Sometimes things actually do ship from a store early. Sometimes people don't know if they have something stolen or not.

But yes, there are altruistic thieves who steal from their places of employment and are careful to cover their tracks. Even returning what they steal so they'd be none the wiser. Here is a long story from one.

GAF is uncommonly well guarded from burner accounts, but it's easy to post on other random forums and enjoy your 15 minutes without being identified.

oh yeaaah, they stole it because they wanted to share the UI of the console to the world,

TRUE HEROES.

c'mon

Jeez, apparently I missed a lot since I didn't see this story at all. Bummer for the guy who is out the money and console. I'm willing to bet many do the people on GAF condemning the guy would've jumped on the chance to get it early too.
