Drew Scanlon is leaving Giant Bomb

Good lord this thread is so weird. So many people projecting their preconceived assumptions of the duders and their personalities. I've never seen such a huge swath of people tell each other how other people think and feel other than when I'm in Giant Bomb topics. Like, how can you say Jeff is jaded, burnt out on games, and needs a break from the industry with such confidence?

The way people talk about the crew like they're characters in a TV show and not real people is just... kinda creepy.

Drew is cool but this kind of needed to happen. Giant Bomb West has been stagnating for a while and this will hopefully light a fire under Jeff's ass.

Its pretty common in GB threads, their GOTY threads are pretty insane with how many people can't handle the idea that opinions might differ.

Jeff needs to be part of a playthrough series. Sure the Ranking of Fighters and Demo Derby and the Home Games are great but they are not playthrough series. The last one he did was what, Deadly Premonition?

He's gonna become a full time pilot isn't he?

As a career? He still has a very long way to go before he could make money off of being a pilot.

He's still in the middle of attaining a Private Pilot's License. After that he would need a total of 150 flight hours, with at least 50 of them being the Pilot in Command and a First Class Medical Certificate in order to meet the bare minimum requirements to start working towards a Commercial Pilot's License. He probably would want to get rated to fly under Instrument Flight Rules and operate multi engine aircraft which would require additional training and flight hours.

Shit gets pretty expensive and he probably still needs a job to pay for all that if he's going that route.

I'll miss him a lot, one of the most likable members of the crew by far.

Just watching his face during their Rock Band Christmas thing was killing me.

Its not like people are talking about Dave down the street or the stalking the "hot chick" on Instagram. Giantbomb is a site that sells itself on personalities and getting the audience invested in what the crew thinks. The result of that is people are going to speculate and project what they think the crew thinks. And that's a trait not unique to Giantbomb's community, you'll see that in any community built around individuals.

So as long as people are talking about whats presented on camera, I don't think that's creepy. It doesnt cross a line until people get deep into personal space.

What is it with people and choosing what seems to be the worst times to abrubtly leave a place they supposedly loved to work at?

First Patrick and then Austin when both managed to fit in really well with the team and were finally coming into their own. Then Super Best Friend Liam right after Matt took a long break (leaving just two out of the four members to provide content), and now Drew when the West Coast team has been a skeleton crew already after Dan's (imo also quite abrubt) departure. I get that these people might want to make use of new opportunities when they become available, or move somewhere else, but why the timing in some cases, and why leave a place you already really love (in Liam's case to do something very similar on his own even when he left SBF because that job triggered his anxiety)?

And in Drew's case it's especially unfortunate as I would have liked to see him actually be able to fly around the crew to conventions when he gets his pilot license. Is that his next goal? Become a pilot? Where is he going?

Jeff should seriously start looking for 2 or 3 new people asap. Surely they can't go on with such a low number of people? Can Jason handle that much production work on his own, with his kid and all?

In any case: best of luck to Drew. I'll miss that superhero jawline for sure.

Jeff.zone said Giant Bomb is actually looking for 3 people - two in the west, one in the east.

Been on the road all day and just now had a chance to check the internet. This is not what I was expecting to find.

Drew, you have been a wonderful, light hearted person to see grow and entertain with Giant Bomb over the years. Your varied interests, talent, and amazing puns will be sincerely missed. Best wishes for you moving forward.

They've been looking for two new people (one for the East and one for the West) for some time now; Jeff also mentioned they can only start looking for Drew's replacement once he's left. Downside of being part of a big company.

Metal Gear Scanlon is what finally pushed me into getting a subscription to Giant Bomb. Thanks for all the laughs Drew, and good luck in the future!

If there was ever a time for Jeff to make Video Game Mountain a reality, now seems like the time :p

Wow, some people here are dicks. Really laying on Rorie so hard.

Fuck you guys and have some respect, you might not agree or even enjoy his way of taking, but get the fuck out with your personal insults and give him some human decency.

Smarmy? Arrogant? The fuck?

I like Rorie, his passion completely takes on different form and can be genuine and candid and sincere on what he likes. Get everything wrong? Everyone gets everything wrong, no idea why you guys are just sniping Rorie for that.

Seriously GB fans can be the most vile people on the internet.

Absolutely gutted honestly, Drew is a huge part of the site for me, really going to miss the guy a lot.

Guess it's just time for him to move on, he's still young and you could always tell he had a much wider and deeper range of interests in subjects other than games.

Giant Bomb will never stop being awesome to me though!

All the best, Solid Scanlon! o7

Totally agree with you, Rorie hate is just plain mean around here. Seems like a great guy and I don't mind him guesting on podcasts now and then.

I wish Rorie was on podcasts more often. He typically plays totally different games to my tastes so it's great getting his thoughts on what he is playing.

I'm SO HAPPY drew is gone. The worst part of any bombcast was listening to him. I actually skipped his entire segment a few times cuz I wasn't in the mood for it. (I've never skipped anyone else's segment in the history of hotspot or beast cast) I like how unique he is but I'm way happier his particular non gaming talk is out of my life.

He's a nice guy and I wish him the best of luck in the future though! He's also an incredible producer so wherever he goes will be way better off having him

Man this sucks. This really sucks. But I truly wish him the best of luck with future projects. And I'll still definitely follow the gorgeous lad, just like Danny.

Curious if his new job is media related.

Damn...this is one hell of a backhanded complement lol.

With hindsight you can tell that Drew has been preparing Jason to take over everything by himself over the past few months. So I don't feel like this is that much of a shock.

It's a personality-based website, it's ok to not like someone being on their content. It's not like people are directly tweeting him telling to fuck off, that would (of course) be totally inappropriate.

People are way more personal about Dan, people have been saying Jeff is incredibly cynical, jaded etc etc for years. If you build a website about the people and their personalities, it's a-ok to comment that you don't like content featuring some of those people. You don't have to like everyone.

Rorie is a nice guy, but I find him extremely dull on the podcasts and UPF, is saying you find someone dull a nice thing? No. Would I say it takes away his decency and makes me "one of the most vile people on the internet"....absolutely not.

I like Rorie on UPF. His laugh makes everything funnier!

But the weekly updates about his progress as a pilot were the number one reason to listen to the Bombcast. What's left now? Videogame news?

Beastcast is bestcast.

And that's fine! My whole point is in a personality based website people are allowed to like/dislike who they want as long as they aren't launching direct, nasty personal attacks on people they dislike. And saying someone is dull or uninteresting hardly qualifies as that, for me at least.
