NeoGAF Timepiece Thread Of Fine Wristwatches

Went to an authorized Hamilton dealer earlier today and tried on some watches. They were a touch pricey, and despite Jomashop's purported woes if a watch is faulty, I opted to go with them as it was 40% off the MSRP. Picked up the H70455533 model. Hopefully it arrives problem-free!

Is the Seiko SKX007 sold in stores? I've been to pretty much every place listed on Seiko's website near me (LA) and haven't found one. Same for the Citizen Nighthawk.

The status of the SKX007 is a bit unclear at the moment, with rumors floating that it is discontinued or at least in limited production. No statement from Seiko, though.

I've had my Citizen AW1361 for over a year now, and for a long period of time, didn't wear it.

It charges via light, and now the battery is depleted and apparently charging it takes a while.

Is there any way for me to fully charge this as quickly as possible?

I'm strongly considering purchasing the Seiko on the left from a shop in Japan. How's that price? And where can I find a manual online for using each of the extra dials?

I'm in the market for a well built, modern wall clock with sweeping second hand movement. I'd prefer quartz obviously, this is for hanging it and forgetting about it. But design and build quality needs to be a few steps above the usual stuff you get from like Target/Home Depot etc. Any ideas?

So I got an Seiko SNK809 and made some modifications to it. Polished it off with a Dremel and Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish. Added a Hadley Roma padded oil-tan leather band.

Now I have an urge to get something a bit more fancy

That polish looks real nice, can you link me to where you got it? I've been thinking of doing the same to my snk807.

It really is wonderful. The watch looks so much better now imo
The link I used was this:
Mothers 05100 Mag & Aluminum Polish - 5 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00068GEJM/?tag=neogaf0e-20

cool thanks.

How did you go about polishing it?

Can't comment on the price, but that watch is a chronograph meaning it can be used as a timer. When you press the top button, it will start counting down through those mini dials; those mini dials are likely for minutes and hours of the countdown. Press the top button again and it will stop the timer. The bottom button resets the timer.

Ah okay so used a Dremel that I also bought from amazon and basically followed this video.

I polished it in a way that it wouldn't heat the watch mechanics up. Basically I just polished it for a few seconds and then I stopped intermittently (to avoid heat damage)

It took a while, but it looks great

Nice, what would be a good way to start a collection, places to buy, models to look out for etc?

I would advise to start tracking 'vintage seiko' in all the relevant places, ebay/watchrecon/chrono24, and joining relevant facebook discussion groups, and of course keep on scouring IG through hashtags :)

Start talking to people who have pieces you like, you'd be surprised how open and honest the community can be. Some will become friends/contacts who you will be able to ping for advice when a cool piece emerges :)

Thanks, I'll do some research, I am in Tokyo next May, so that might be a good place to start looking!

Recently I was looking for a Monaco style homage, no mean feat these days, it seems that style of watch isn't offered much, but I managed to find an old stock Casio that was about as close as I could get!!!

I REALLY like the look of the Fossil Q Crewmaster. The colors on it really pop and its a fun design.

I also like the look of this too, but its an Invicta an apparently its a garbage brand. Anyone know of other similarly designed watches?

I liked the fossil Q a lot too, but then not as much when I saw it in person. There's probably a better way to describe it but the face of the watch felt kinda flat and two dimensional. I do really like its functionality, conceptually.

So I'm too sick to post all the link, but apparently thanks to a user on WUS. Looks like a 62 reissue. LE with 8l35 and non LE with 6r15.

I've always wanted a 62mas reissue:

I've only ever had one watch. It was a gift for when I started dating my girl and her dad got me one. It got stolen quick when I took it off for Judo.

I like how understated yet beautiful it is. It's not like people recognize it in the street.

I'm just happy to enjoy it myself.

Congrats! Looks awesome. And be surprised what people recognize. I've had people make comments on my various watches, and it's not like I wear popular brands. "Ah, a Nomos Ahoi, nice."

It depends where you are, my APRO and GMT never gets any comments where I live (Montreal), but the day I bring anything, even an obscure Nivada Grenchen Chrono, to Miami or NY, I get nods and comments all the time...

Well, that happened. I guess I can join Watch-Gaf now.

That's an awesome watch.

I had one in yellow gold and every time I wore it, I felt a bit self conscious and over time got bored since it wasn't in the normal rotation. Flipped it and may come back to it (probably not).

Personally, I love how understated and simple yours is. It's for you and you alone to know the intricacies and value of the movement beneath the simple dial.

Wow, such a gem. I love the minimal style.

OnkelC I have a watch question for you. My daily beat up watch after 3 years was stolen while I was away over the weekend. I want to get a Sinn UX. Since you have or at least had one do you think it makes for a decent everyday watch?

Hail to the Chef
thanks for asking!
it is a very big watch, which must be taken into consideration when worn under cuffs or with a suit. other than that, it is virtually indestructible. Be aware that after max. seven years, the battery will need to be replaced, meaning a several-day service absence and a 200 EUR recision fee (oil change and all).

I almost feel like asking what the gaffer does for a living to afford a watch like that. Though it's rude.

A minimalist look that still looks very detailed. You can wear that Patek both formal and informal.

As for the 62mas reissue, the pic I posted wasn't indicative of the reveal. It uses arrow hands :(

What site do you guys use to check watch prices? I'm thinking about buying an IWC but I want to get a feel for prices before I go to the store.

Edit:

I guess Jomashop is decent but now I've gotta decide if my next watch is going to be a leather IWC or another brand with a metal band.

The new sizes are tasty, but the colour scheme on the bezel is too gaudy for my taste. The pepsi bezel on a GMT is still the prettiest, again IMHO.

In other news, the SRPA21 finally arrived! Pics on the weekend.

You think the Pepsi is less gaudy than the the BLNR?
