The Atlantic's The 50 Best Podcasts of 2016
A good selection here, from the well-known series like This American Life and Invisibilia to the miniseries like Stranglers and There Goes the Neighborhood, which explores the effects of gentrification on a Brooklyn neighborhood

I'm looking for what I think is a podcast. I came across it during an ad read in one of the many podcasts I listen to. I'm not sure if it was a recent one or not, since I'm going through a couple of back catalogues as well as keep up to date with the weekly stuff. The basic premise is: guys analyse the technology in science fiction films. I believe it was called something along the line of IT vs... something something. But I can't find anything on google. Much appreciated.

Nvm found it. It's called IT > Sci-fi.

Will categorize and whatnot later

Highlights
Supercontext - Good discussion on film, shows, music, other mediums that delves into cultural context and other aspects besides "it is good or bad"
Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People - A laidback series that somehow always teases out fascinating stories and intriguing conversations from the callers
The Film Reroll - A very fun podcast that reimagines movies as tabletop RPGs where dice rolls decide how the plot progresses. Often and hilariously goes off the rails of the original story
Spycast - A compelling podcast that interviews people who were part of the intelligence community in various countries, eras, and cultural contexts

So I finally updated my iOS recently after putting it off for ages, and holy shit the default Podcasts app is now utter garbage. It's basically unusable.

Any suggestions for actually good podcast apps on iOS? Preferably one that allows me to carry over my downloaded episodes so I can keep the now-archived Hardcore History stuff I have?

The One True Answer is Overcast.

Talking Simpsons is the podcast I'm enjoying the most these days. Part of it is because they are getting into peak simpsons. The last episode was on Marge vs. The Monorail. Days like this make me wish I had cable so I could watch the Simpsons marathon. I should also check out laser time's other podcasts at some point.

Flipping through this thread this week and I saw someone mention Four Finger Discount, a different Simpsons podcast. I tried it and its pretty good but I prefer Talking Simpsons. Crazy that they're lined up since their last episode was also Marge vs. The Monorail

Talking Simpsons is amazing.

Anyone looks for some great laughs should check out the Cave Comedy Radio podcasts.

The Last Podcast on The Left is great and goes into conspiracy theories/ serial killers/paranormal, pretty dark humor and is the funniest podcast I've listened to.

Wizard and the Bruiser is also really good, the same style but about nerd and geek stuff. I fucking LOVE LPOTL.

Would strongly recommend to any brits (or americans that like british humour) to listen to the Elis and John podcast from Radio X.

Nice list!

I have a new show come out recently called Spoiler Cunts. Its for people who like spoilers for TV and movies and don't want to wait for "spoiler episodes" or until something comes out to discuss what many people already know. I'm currently producing and editing the show. It's only on the 7th episode but I really like where we are headed.

How do you guys sync podcasts to a new iphone? I have a ton of podcasts saved on my phone which are no longer on the podcast store. So every time I upgrade my phone those podcasts just get deleted. I always do a full back up but I guess podcasts aren't included?

I just listened to the latest Comedy Bang Bang podcast and I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Is there anything similar that you can recommend?

My current list I go through every week: This American Life, My Brother My Brother and Me, Welcome to Night Vale, 99% Invisible, and a couple others off and on. Always looking for ones that blend education, interesting topics and comedy. Really dig 99% so far, haven't gone through them all.

Anyway, shameless plug but me and a buddy have a podcast called The Timebat Show. We have a pretty small following, but we do new episodes every week consistently (up to 17!). It's mostly a random pop culture talk show in a similar vein to mbmbam, but we tend to go down the rabbit hole on fun topics. We get our inspiration from reddit and the news and just let it take us wherever. Hard to describe, but people tell me we're entertaining so there's that.

I just listened to the latest Comedy Bang Bang podcast and I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Is there anything similar that you can recommend?

A lot of the shows on the Earwolf network are pretty similar, Hello From The Magic Tavern in particular. It's about a guy who gets teleported into a fantasy land and decides to do a podcast interviewing the local people. It's like CBB in that it's an "ordinary" host interacting with comedians playing characters, and it's pretty funny! Start from episode 1 if you can.

I'd recommend Improv4Humans as well, Matt Besser's podcast which has the best UCB LA improvisers on doing scenes based on suggestions. A lot of CBB regulars are on it a lot, like Andy Daly or Jon Gabrus. It's a consistently great show, and the recent episode with radicalface is a treat.

There's always frequent CBB guest Paul F Tompkins show Spontaneation which is another (not quite as good IMO) improv show. Or Hollywood Handbook, my personal favourite, which has these two guys who play Hollywood big shots and give faux advice about how to make it the industry and have self serving interviews with celebrities. It's a show steeped in irony with some very clever satire.

No, but both of those sound interesting. Adding them to my list and will check them out soon. I love true crime, especially when the discussion is a little lighter. Thanks for the recs!

Rumble Strip's recent episode Benedict Arnold's Leg was compelling, anger-inducing, and validating

An interesting discussion on some less-talked-about stories from the American Revolution

An infuriating look at the Texas Textbook industry from someone who had to deal with textbook editors, and how they deify American history and control the message that children learn,

And validating my own love for history, in hearing how important it is to learn about the past

It's a fantastic episode

Does anyone use podfanatic, I've been using it and am enjoying it.
Never heard of it. Quick search says it's like a podcast directory? Seems useful. Honestly, the best way I've discovered new podcasts is browsing recommendations on r/podcasts and r/audiodramas, and looking at articles about the best podcasts of the week/year or the best [insert topic] podcasts

Yea, it has alot of podcasts, I'm using it because I could listen to the podcasts at work, or find new ones thru there to listen too.

I've been listening to Chapo Trap House for the past three weeks without much interruption. It's a little lefty for Gaf, but they offer some of the most cogent political analysis I've seen anywhere. Funny as hell, too.

cum town is also amazing

There's a Podcast GAF? Awesome. I recently bought Pocket Casts after seeing a thread that had a ton of responses to get it. I'm trying to whittle down the podcasts because I got a lot at once. I think right now I have about 42 which I might lower. Going to give some things more time.
