Mordor was such a bummer. I played it after hearing the deliberations and was like "Really? This is it?".

Wouldn't even make a top 10 of 2014 for me.

Legend of Grimrock 2, still the best game of 2014 and quite possibly the generation. Top 3 for sure.

what is that feeling when you've got a game on your backlog that you bought day one, that you keep meaning to load up, and then you find out it apparently got a sequel 3 years ago?

Yeah - maybe Mordor wasn't the right choice. Why did it win again?

Stabbing orcs is badass, especially after you've stabbed ten or twenty million of them. Game is so boring.

Wii U had a great 2014 imo--Tropical Freeze, MK8, Bayonetta 2, Smash 4. But honestly the goty discussion was worth it that year for the Destiny battle alone.

Something something nemesis system.

I still like Shadow of Mordor, but yeah it's maybe not as great as some other games that year in hindsight.

The Horizon QL showcases the same issue that basically every stealth action game has, which is that they give you dozens of different tools to handle each situation but right from the start you also have a braindead-easy way to take out enemies that's way less fun than the other tools but also works much more reliably. So many of these games rely on you artificially restraining yourself to clearing out bases in a fun or interesting way instead of the game coming up with those restrictions for you.

So random theory here....

Drew just retweeted Steve Lin's tweet about his new video game history thing.

Dan said that Drew would be travelling around the world a lot.

Drew has suddenly been super interested in old games and framemeister lately...

I know he said he was going solo but.... Just saying

How big of a step up from the first Grimrock is it? I never finished the first but I really loved the concept.

The dramatic change is in variety and world layout. Grimrock 1 was a throwback to dungeon crawler; you're descending deeper and deeper into one dungeon. Grimrock 2's world is sort of like Zelda 1. In theory you can go nearly anywhere at the start, except some areas by populated with enemies that are too tough, and others require information you don't initially have access to. I know some people aren't into the combat and the grid movement of the series but it has some of the most satisfying exploration and puzzles solving in a game I've played.

That sounds good, I'll get around to playing it eventually!
Has he mentioned anything on twitter about it? I hadn't thought of it until you mentioned it, but there haven't been any February updates on it.
No twitter updates that I've seen. It worries me because if episode 1 has been pushed this far back, the timeline for the rest of the season could be huge. Hopefully it's just nailing down engine stuff and developing an efficient pipeline.

Since this is kind of an unofficial John Wick thread, I saw the first one a week or so ago and I gotta say something.

The first 30 or so minutes of that movie is the best part, and nothing that follows the sledgehammer scene could have ever lived up to it. Once it gets to the part where he's just shooting dudes and doing regular action movie stuff, I was kinda over it. They build him up so effectively to be this absolute monster, and it's all great, and then he just kinda... shoots dudes well. Neat.

Good movie, but I'd almost have rather it been a short film that stopped as soon as he dug his guns out.

This is like buying titanfall 2 and being like "MAN I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS STORY"

There are so many good scenes in that movie though, my favorite is probably the night club scene. I agree with the sledgehammer scene being badass, I love the character building they did... you can tell his name carries immense weight in their world. I get what you're saying but man, its one of the best action movies ever to me.

I guess I'm just not really one for straight up action movies. I can see why people are into it, especially people like Dan, but the beginning was the best part for me. Not sure I really wanna see the sequel since I'm assuming it's just more wacky crazy shooting hi-jinx.

It was well-shot and choreographed and what not, certainly above something generic like Commando, but I think at this point I'm kinda over dudes in movies skillfully shooting other dudes. The realistic amount of reloading was a nice touch, though.

My dude, you need to see Hard Target with Van Damme.

He punches snakes, I mean, come on ;).

I dislike straight action movies as much as the next guy, but Wick is a savage.

I don't disagree with you, he's certainly a rough customer. But I think for my taste it falls under like an action movie equivalent of the old "nothing is scarier" trope. Like, with the amount of build and tension given to Wick and his skills, and the mob boss is telling Theon Greyjoy how badly he fucked up, I feel like anything they show at that point isn't as savage as whatever my brain was imagining.

I know it's a major Hollywood action movie and considering all that it's great, but in my head, the perfect version of that movie ends the moment he picks up a gun.

The "targeting specific areas" mechanic of Horizon's combat looks really cool, but the rest is your Mordor/Mad Max formula. Kinda dissapointed after all the glowing reviews.

Maybe the story is what holds everything together, but I have the "Vinny problem" of having to visit every single part of the map.

Alex needs to dial it back on the 'clarifying what other people are saying/things he doesn't know about' thing. He does it a lot and it seems like he does it even more with Dan.

All this talk of the 2014 GOTY and not one mention of the disgusting snub of Wolfenstein in favor of shit like Destiny, a game everyone not named Brad hated, and Hearthstone, a game no one gave a shit about.

I wish he'd dial down the whole "You'll be seeing more of this guy through the rest of the series" he's been doing lately in BitE and Films & 40s. Is it really necessary to spoil if a guy's gonna live or not?

I agree, snubbing Wolfenstein, that's fucked up. Imo it's better than Doom.

Alex liked Hearthstone a lot. I believe Drew did too.

Yeah, found this especially frustrating during the most recent Films & 40s. "i'm sorry to say this is the last you'll see of Johnny Tran"

What makes John Wick great is not only his character or the action but the world he inhabits(the side characters are great). The movie shows just enough to let you build and imagine in your mind how the world he's in functions. The sequels builds on that but again, it doesn't show you everything, it gives you just enough to keep you thinking and talking about it. It's a very fascinating world and I think it's the strongest thing about the film besides the action.

Oh, it's also very self aware about itself and how John Wick is basically a one man army. You don't watch the film to know IF John is going to kill said person or not, you watch it to see how he's going to kill that person. What makes it entertaining is that they talk all these stories about him yet some people still want to try and FUCK him over and at that point it's like

ghhjjym5.gif

From there it's all laughs for me as Wick serves up a plate of whoop ass.

Wow kinda turned off that Horizon is using that fucking whistle mechanic which made Mafia III a cakewalk too.

Do developers really think gamers want their game that dumbed down?

I meant to say hell yeah with that message cause I agree. But the sex scenes in Wolfenstein are probably the most tasteful sex scenes of any game.

Agreed, they hit it out of the park with that one.

The sex scene in Wolfenstein is the only sex scene in a game I didn't cringe at. At least what I can remember.
