Competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee Discussion Thread

Armada is inhuman. His ability to keep calm and clutch out every situation constantly impressive. And like usual, fox dittos between armada and leffen are always great.

I think it's safe to say we are out of the Platinum age, and in a new age of Melee. The game/scene itself isn't growing at the rapid rate it did from 2013-2015, it's still growing of course but now its more steady and less exponential. On top of that the meta has stabilized, and players are more focused on refining their craft. Idk what this new era would be called tho.

Also honestly, Armada deserves his own documentary

This dude's level of dominance while the game is reaching its peak is mind boggling to me

Only uses Fox against: Puff, Leffen, and PPMD (whenever PP will return)

He uses Peach for every single other player on the planet. Peach. PEACH.

I don't think there are five gods anymore, well there still are but now its the five gods and Armada who I truly believe belongs in a tier of his own. Sure he will drop a set every now and then but its so rare, like below 50% rare.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKzYWqkga74

I'm rewatching Episode 9 of the doc and I get to Prog's part where he says Mang0 never gave it his all and if he did he would definitely be the greatest of all time, and I can't help but think how silly that sounds now. I don't think Prog or anyone else during the time of the doc's release would have ever expected a reign and level of consistency and pure dominance from one player. Especially since Melee is the biggest it has ever been, and being played at the highest level of any eSport.

Idk Armada really is something special and even though I sometimes get tired of him winning, looking back on everything I think sooo many people will appreciate what he's doing, and how well he is doing it.

He's the GOAT

I think it's kind of hard to tell how fast we're growing or if we're growing at all at this point, I don't think we can really say for a little bit. Last year saw sub-super nationals or whatever they're called tournaments like Shine and Smash Con (I don't count those as supermajors, just regular majors) top numbers from the pre-2015 EVOs. But then Genesis 4 had less entrants than 3.

I'll be honest though I really think that the people who think Melee's just gonna keep growing and growing and become a bigger eSport are kinda delusional. It's not really that easy to get into if you're playing on a CRT and it's insanely hard to get good at, and we're not seeing any signs of support from Nintendo in terms of Melee HD.

I definitely agree on Armada though. He's on another level. A lot of the tournaments he lost in the past few years could have just as easily gone his way, whereas when he's on-point it's hard to see him losing in an alternate universe. So I honestly think the statistics (in terms of his win-rate) are kind of skewed by pure chance. What I mean by this is that if the sample size of tournaments was larger and top players could play at tournaments every day or so and wouldn't face any health problems or burnout because of this (obviously impossible, but hypothetical), then I think Armada would have an even higher win-rate against other gods than he does now.

Armada has won every tournament I've ever attended, where he has also attended. He's incredible in every sense of the word.

Also not only is [A]rmada incredibly consistent, but he's a pretty decent person too. There's not a lot of dirt on him from the past and his streams are pretty chill too.

First hour of Summit 3.5 and the gifs are already rolling in...

Some of the best stuff comes out of the training days as people arrive for a big event.

Also for Melee I'm pretty happy that I'm keeping up my kind of resolution to hit an out of town event once a month this year.

January through May are a lock, gotta see what I'll do in June before EVO in July.*

I'm not going 0-2, but I'm not really getting out of pools either. Gotta work on that.

Smashbox is going to be up on Kickstarter starting Wednesday.

I liked the idea, but I really think I'd rather have one that has actual analog instead of the digital+modifier buttons. Isn't that what B0XX is supposed to be? I see people talk about that but it's hard to actually find info on it.

What a laughable match just now. lolm2k, lolchu.

plup just 3-0'd mango

his sheik looks unstoppable

Nah, He had big problems against SFAT. Couldn't for the life of me understand why Mango went Falco instead of Fox who obviously has a bigger advantage against her.

Axe's expressions after taking games off Mango, lol.

Can't believe he won that set. Mango looked worse and worse as the set went on, totally shook.

Wow, this mafia game is huge.

Mafia should win easy unless the players that draw it are awful.

Or not, Leffen with the god tier vigi shot before he died.

I was watching blind on game 2. I totally had the read on Mango faking cop and figured they got Ice right after the kill power dropped. He was acting different and it just felt like he pulled the whole thing out of his ass, going from "I've got juicy info" to "nah it's not so good, I'm just the damn cop (so plz don't kill me)." And then the mafia didn't kill the power role when they had a clear opportunity. If it was less sketchy in the first place I could see it being a 4th dimensional play by the mafia to make the town lynch the cop, but it was just the icing on the cake.

I thought the last one was Hbox and until he was out, since he was biting so hard on the fake cop. When they kept going after Crunch died I didn't really have any reads except Caitlin was probably town since Mango called her out and was 99% Mafia. I was kind of leaning Shab in the last round but it was like 51/49. Toss up between him and Lucky.

I'm rooting for Plup, but honestly at this point it doesn't matter. I JUST DON'T WANT ARMADA TO WIN AGAIN. Holy crap, it's getting so boring.

Brehs this OP gonna need an update for the next thread

2x Evo champion. MLG champion. Simply put, Mango is the greatest to ever play the game. The results speak for themselves: since 2008 Mango has wrecked everyone in his path. While the other gods are certainly capable of taking sets, and even tournaments, off Mango, he always seems to find a way to bounce back. Will he make it a three peat this year?

Armada is a fucking monster

and just witnessing this level of dominance is inspiring and frightening at the same time

It's needed to be updated for like two years lol

Honestly I don't think the "Era of the Five Gods," is over yet, Big House was only a few months ago, but Armada is clearly a tier above everyone else atm at the very least.

[A]rmada is SS Tier. The other Melee pros are S tier.

Also I did okay at our Fresno regional, got this sick Turnip snipe:

https://clips.twitch.tv/NimbleSmokyRingCoolStoryBob

I got out of pools on loser's side in both Melee and Smash 4, but then lost right after top 32 in both games.

Was a fun time, apart from the fact that Smash.GG crashed for three hours on Saturday and the TO's freaked out so I helped run paper brackets even though I went to play and relax instead of my usual TO duties lol.

I did not play my best though, as I was helping TO. Not to john but I didn't even get to warm up due to the Smash.GG nonsense...

What is the qualification for being a "god" these days, now that we have a handful of non-gods capable of beating gods?

"Be able to take a set off Armada?"

History aside, it feels like there are 1-2 "gods" at this point and that is Armada and maybe Hbox. Mango, M2K, and Leffen are too inconsistent to be considered equal to those two (especially Armada). I'd put those three in the next tier down along with Plup, who seems to go fairly even with them but generally gets bodied by Hbox and Armada (and rarely loses to anyone aside from those 5).

Then a massive tier after that extending from basically 7-15.

+ Win a national tournament

It's getting more and more obvious that Plup should probably be in this tier but Armada is a huge hurdle for him because he seems unstoppable in the Sheik matchup. If he just played another top tier he'd probably be there by now.

I'm waiting for the day he pulls out that Fox he's been working on against Armada. IIRC he mentioned transitioning to dual maining Sheik and Fox with the pocket/secondary Samus.
