No Man's Sky "Path Finder" Content Update announced

Sorry, I wasn't referring to you. It's just something you learn to take into account and so manage your inventory accordingly.

Sorry, we're not understanding each other.
I'll rephrase:

I'm on planet XYZ and my starship has about 300 plutonium in it's hold.
My Exocraft is on my home planet, several thousands of light years away in a different star system, and has two stacks of 500 plutonium in it's hold.
I lift of in my starship and when I push down on the D-pad to replenish my thrusters, I not only have acces to the stack of 300 Pu in my starship, but also to the two stacks of 500 Pu in my Exocraft.
I'm wondering if this a feature or a bug.

Question for trading pros: Do prices at individual space stations change? I've found a station that offers around a 100% markup on both Plutonium and Titanium (they have gold stars next to them), and I'm wondering if I should bookmark this station and return here with a big haul. Obviously I don't want to do that if there will be different star items when I return =P

Noone is having their PS4 Pro fan run very audibly almost constantly while playing this except me?

For comparison, i play Horizon in 4K HDR for hours and i rarely hear my fan at all....seems odd and hopefully something they can patch. Its making me concerned to where i dont want to play NMS at all for fear its damaging my system

I hear my PS4 Pro fan all the time playing NMS. It kicks on and runs constant, but the moment I quit the game it stops. Doesn't do it for any other game but this...

Completely off-topic, but has anyone here heard of the band Humanfly and their album Awesome Science? I never realised it before, but all of the lyrics could have been written about NMS (though it was released a few years before the game).

e.g:

"A journey of life unfolds, sun fills the skyline
Death throes of a star, nebular remains"
- Golden Arrows

or

"We are all the same, forged in the heart of the stars"
- A Majestic Story

or

"Waves of messengers in the sky
New stars are forged
Thousands of light years from our earth"
- Poetry of Light

or

"A network a blueprint, like we've never seen
A cluster a sea of dust, like we've never seen
A constantly changing landscape, blinded by the waves
If my eyes could only show you."
- The Armour of Science

or

"Written in the red light from a distant world
Smaller than a grain of sand
As I gaze out into space
I see only void."
- Frozen In Time, Billions of Light Years Away

Apologies for the thread hijack. Let normal service resume :D

My main gripe with survival so far is how quick life support drains. Essentially it forces you to walk instead of run and it's incredibly annoying and takes away from the experience. The plutonium doesn't bother me too much although it was frustrating on the first couple of planets.

This definitely becomes less of an issue as you get deeper into survival. But also having a vehicle will help.

Land vehicles really free you up in survival though, as you can explore without this hindrance.

They need to add a 'favor performance' mode on PS4 Pro cause playing at 1080p the game not only runs better but the Pro itself is not quiet but a lot less loud than at 4k.

I hope they drop a civilisation update soon, you hear about all these alien races but no hints or signs of any of the civilisation they left behind.

I'm thinking it might be time for me to take the plunge and try this out. I was pretty hyped for this game pre-launch but ended up skipping out. All of this new content plus better performance on Pro sounds like a good deal to me.

This is good to hear. How do you get a vehicle? I will admit I'm only a few warps into survival so I haven't unlocked too much yet.
Any advice for pirate battles? I feel like I just get slaughtered right away--should I wait and try to get better ship weapons first before taking them on?

Honestly im loving just playing around in creative and making my own stories, the resolution bump and hdr looks fantastic to

I jumped into creative last night for a couple of hours and enjoyed it more than normal mode. I was getting frustrated with constantly having to check and source fuel for my ship. I really just want to roam and see what I find. However at the same time, when I realised I can get shit hot multi tools gifted to me and just take any ship I fancy, it kind of takes away any reward for gathering materials and money. It's a bit too convenient and easy now.

Oh, I understand now. Before the recent patch you couldn't transfer resources from the Vehicles to your suit, you had to transfer them to your ship first. Perhaps this is a slight bug related to the change and now it thinks the inventory of the Vehicle is the ships inventory. Either way, I'd make the most of it at the moment. It's not game breaking although I'd hope they patch it out just to give us one more thing to think about when managing for a long trek.

On that note, I think I'm dead on Permadeath. I got given a quest to seek out an abandoned building but it turned out it was under water. Not thinking, I landed on a small rocky island so I could just dive straight down and grab it. Perfect! It worked lovely and I managed to get back to the surface quite easily ... The only problem is, I didn't check my plutonium situation and now I've got a long swim just to get to the shore so I can search. LOL

I'd just found a crashed ship with 42 slots and swapped it for NOTHING at the space station. I got a 23 slot S-class fighter too.

It was interesting to hear Sean say he's going to continue to play with the terrain. It will be nice to see what planets look like by the end. So get snapping now.

To get a vehicle you need to build a base, build a vehicle terminal and hire a technician. Once you've done what he asks you can start building vehicles.

I'd avoid pirates in survival until you've upgraded your ship. Keep an eye on the readout on your ships screens, it'll tell you when you're about to get scanned. The best thing to do is not to go too far from planets - if you get scanned then you can dive into the atmosphere and they'll lose you. Once you've evaded them you'll have a few minutes before the next scan which is time enough to travel safely.

Look for a life support sigma blueprint at a Korvax space station(if they offer it). Even the sigma upgrade significantly reduces life support reduction.

I usually wait until I have a ship with better shields and weapons before challenging the pirates on survival. They did reduce the difficulty of pirate battles a bit in the recent update. Taking on one pirate isn't too difficult now, although more than that can still be extremely dangerous in the early game. Mokeyjoe post above offers perfect advice on how to handle pirates early on.

Saw this on reddit. Never seen a freighter like that before, though I've seen those side engines on ships before. I had thought the freighters were all static designs, but it looks like they're procedurally generated like the ships are.

Sampled a few songs, bought the album on itunes. Thanks for this post. I can see myself listening to this while playing.

I've mentioned these guys before, but Astra's The Black Chord gives me No Man's Sky vibes as well but that's probably because I discovered them soon after NMS announcement buzz and the two have similar iconography lol:

If I play on my 4k tv with my PS4 pro is it locked to the higher resolution setting or can I manually set to 1080 60fps? Really want to get back into the game, thanks in advance!

Yeah they are modular/procedurally generated. My first freighter had those engines, but I've never seen a combination like this. The color scheme might be new, it's beautiful.

I wish in the game there were more (rare) points of interest not showing up in a scan. I remember the first time I came across a portal: they are completely useless, but just finding one by chance felt amazing.
Now I actually wish every monolith/plaque/ruin was like that, leaving only high tech structures to come up on scans.

Yes it does, including traders that land on planets as well. Keep an eye on trade % look for the Gold Star to see what they want the most in the Sell section.

Has it been confirmed or not that the 60 fps mode is glitched and you don't actually get 60? Somebody said they had to restart the game entirely to fix it? Because I sure don't have 60 consistently, nowhere close to that DF video. For instance, with two enemies and a sentinel, my frames dropped to what looked like ~15 while I was just looking at a Armadium depot. My pro is set to 1080 of course.

Started to play it after I bought it on sale.

Is there a way to "mark" a place on a planet? Or just marki station or anything else?

I found a great ship to repair, but I need to travel a bit to find all the needed material, so I would like to mark it to find it again... :p

Also, is there a map of planets/galaxy somewhere in the game?

You can place a waypoint by pressing up on the d-pad.
The galaxy map can be accessed only in space, by pressing up on the d-pad and selecting it from the menu.

Still watching it so I can't do a summary

Also, an easy way to increase FoV on PS4 (vehicles only): https://youtu.be/DWdAkpw1b0Y

Really great talk by Murray... loved his point about engine affecting the games you make and why we should not just give up and use UE as an answer to everything... engine making is a craft and some games and some new genres are better off because people do not just take the middleware route (not a bad route to take, but it is quite depressing seeing any studio attempting something new labelled as a time waster that could just use Unreal Engine... or Unity... etc...).

If your playing Normal or Survival you need to own a base and finish a few quests first from the construction builder NPC that you recruit after you install the terminal for it. You will get an item called the Beckon, this will allow you to make visble way points that will also show up when you leave the planet or if your away from your beckon, I use these to mark Trade stations and trading buildings.

It's finicky but if you scan a house as if it's an animal, a small white dot will mark it. Or create a beacon as mentioned.

Galaxy map is on down on the d-pad, no?

You're more than welcome. Glad you like them!

I'm also liking Astra, very NMS.

I cannot find an abandoned base to claim home planet. I did the first warp to a new system then pottered around landing on each of the new planets/moons.

I've found outposts etc but my current 'mission' is to craft a warp cell (need electron vapour apparently which I cannot find anywhere - do I need to craft it)

I've very nearly been stranded due to lack of plutonium on one horrible moon.

On the other hand I started a new survival game after this pathfinder update and it feels much easier in terms of having the resources available to get to your ship.

Desperate to get something that can scan properly (either multitool or a new ship)

Thanks. Here's Innes McKendrick's (one of the lead programmers) also on "Continuous World Generation": http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1024265/Continuous-World-Generation-in-No

What I take from this and Sean's talk is that we'll probably see continued support for NMS for quite a while, because the programming and techniques used in creating the game still interests and fascinates them. The more they work within the engine they've created and the game, the more they continue to learn so they're not only furthering their own knowledge, but supporting a viable product for other people to use as well. And we of course, get a constantly improving game.

It's just you and a procedurally generated universe being procedural!

Funnily enough, those were actually some of the first "monoliths" I've encountered on launch day.
I love how everyone playing this game takes different things for granted. Except for the asshole crabs. Asshole crabs are universal.

If you build a signal scanner you can scan for habitable bases (up on Dpad).

You craft electron vapour. You first need suspension fluid, which you craft from carbon. If you don't have the blueprints then hit up some manufacturing facilities and things.

Wow I haven't really played this game since near-launch and it looks like a lot has changed. I'm kind of lost in my progress anyways.

Anyone else start a new game after the update? I feel like I have no idea what i'm doing lol.

I started a Survival game after the Foundation Update, but not this one. I wasn't far enough along to warrant another restart. But certainly if you haven't played since launch it's much more interesting starting over.

Oh my god the crabs... first animal encountered in the game... fuck them! I was still trying to figure out how to play and these started to attack me...
I will take revenge one day....

Yep, that's the bit that heartened me too.

Well, I'm disheartened by it at the moment. I just loaded up my original save and travelled back to my start point. 4 out of the 5 planets are now undiscovered. And when you land on them it takes the space of one of your discovered planets. That is piss poor.

All your discovered waypoints are still saved and animals, but it makes no sense. One planet was originally cold, now it's hot. I have discovered animals that just aren't there anymore, because it's a different planet. This isn't just changing the terrain, it's outright deleting people's discoveries. If someone had come to this planet since I'd been there it would now be their planet. How are servers even making sense of this?

If this game is "updated" again people will lose LOADS.

^ I saw something similar to that. I landed on a planet that was barren, one of those rocks with no atmosphere and with a heavier load on life support. No animals, low flora, etc. But on the Discoveries page it showed a half completed animal list from another player, and the planet was described as a more general type of planet. It wasn't a different planet on the list, either, the name and system were the same.

So let me understand this better. You landed on a dead planet with someone else's discoveries saved? And its description was something other than dead? Was the system discovered and named by that person?

mokeyjoe

Well, barren planets weren't a thing until Foundation. So presumably it used to have life on.

If they're going to do a major flora/fauna update down the line, then it will similarly eradicate discoveries.

It's a controversial point for sure, and I think they were looking at user reaction to gauge how well that sort of thing went down. I think in general most people are happy with it if it improves the game, so I think you'll see this sort of thing again down the line - although not especially frequently.

Personally I'm for it. Foundation was a welcome upgrade over the launch planets. If my previously discovered animals disappear and are replaced with cooler new ones to discover, well that's a good thing IMO.

Unfortunately I think quite a few of the discoveries near the launch period were never actually saved on the server due to their broken, overwhelmed servers and bad network code at the time.

As for things looking different, well, that's what Foundation did. To improve the terrain, they had to press the reset button on the universe. They couldn't just improve one aspect because everything that's procedurally-based in their engine is intertwined.

They'll probably end up doing it again down the road. I think it's better to just not get too attached to anything. It was certainly worth it before because the terrain looks so much better now, so I suspect if they do a reset they'll wait until there's something significant they want to improve. I'm personally glad they weren't too afraid to mess up people's planets because the game is better for it.

mokeyjoe

Member
I think they'll hold off doing it until they've got enough to justify reseeding. I'm not expecting a big galaxy update until later this year - maybe an anniversary update. Anything before then is most likely to be gameplay related like Pathfinder.

I was actually quite impressed that the Foundation reset went as smoothly as it did.
