You responded to a post saying "Emma Stone was highly praised for her perfomance" with "Was she?"
That's not dealing with personal opinion, and what is or isnt important to you is irrelevant. We are talking about the film's reception, and how Stone's performance affected that. You were one of 50 million people who saw the movie.
In general, was Emma Stone praised for her role? Obviously.
It was a rhetorical question on my end. In a ''be that as it may, I didn't see it that way''.
Silly me for having an opinion that goes against the masses.
But I'll stop here and not derail the thread anymore than I already have. To which I apologize for to everyone else.

Eh, I disagree. La La Land wasn't your typical musical, I feel that actors with a classical stage musical background would've acted way too much like they were in a musical instead of being in a film that happens to have a few songs into it. It's not like Gosling and Stone didn't have music experience before this: Gosling has been playing music and singing in bands almost as long as he has been a professional actor and Stone was in cabaret. That said, I generally dislike musicals, so perhaps I'm alone in this.

Any word on the auto tune for Emma Watson? Those trailers were smothered in it. My SO will probably want to see this but I'll be happy so long as Dan Stevens keeps getting big roles. Guy is super underrated.
Emma Stone's role definitely relied more on acting than singing. She had one solo, two duets, and that ensemble piece near the beginning, in what was a 130 minute film largely starring two people. That's a lot of non-singing. Also, several of her scenes worked because she was able to get a lot of emotions across through her facial expressions and body language without being over the top dramatic.
I have zero confidence that Emma Watson could pull any of that off (plus she can't sing as evidenced by the movie subject of this thread). I don't think that finding a young actress from a stage background who could match Emma's acting and easily best her singing would be impossible. However, Emma Stone does come with some name recognition.
I liked Ryan Gosling in this role, but I think that he would be easier to replace.

She didn't pass La La Land for this. She was asking for way too much money for the role and the LLL producers just said AYY LMAO
That's hilarious. She definitely wouldn't have won a single award that Stone did. I like Watson but an Oscar caliber actress she is not.

It's a gorgeous movie in parts, though with moments where the CG pops out too much (particularly exterior wide shots of the castle itself). Be Our Guest is a highlight - it's just a ton of fun. Visual spoiler:

The big scene - the dance scene - started off pretty basic, but steps its game up as it continues on. I was a bit worried it would just be so bland, but it wasn't even its final form.
The movie is thankfully not just a 1-to-1 remake of the animated movie. There's added background, which adds some needed layers to what otherwise would've been a bland movie. Almost disappointed that Gaston isn't given more background, but I can deal with that.
Emma Watson and Dan Stevens have some really good chemistry as Belle and Beast. Watson particularly does a commendable job with her musical numbers and just got better as the movie goes along, autotune/mixing or not.
Dan Stevens has one big song (Evermore), and it's pretty fucking great. It wouldn't be out of place with the original 1991 movie. I'm curious if that's him solely or if they had to do a bit of work to make his voice deeper to match the Beast appearance, but either way, it's great. Perfect piece for the Beast.
Luke Evans IS Gaston. Dude nailed it, cheesiness and all. He really had fun with it.
Josh Gad as LeFou wasn't just comic relief, thankfully. He earns his paycheque with Gaston (the song) alone.
Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen were fucking hilarious. McGregor particularly carries the furniture cast.
I had Luke Evans and Josh Gad penned as the MVPs at the start, but it's Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen by the end of the movie.
I was worried that the new music wouldn't mesh with the originals, but each one works so well. I've already commented on Evermore, so I'll go straight to How Does A Moment Last Forever. The Celine Dion version is straight out of the 90s, it's so damn good, very powerful ballad. And the versions throughout the movie are appropriately subtle. Emma Watson's version hits a bit hard in context of the movie.
Days In The Sun might be a tearjerker. Great piece for the cast.
Beauty and the Beast: Emma Thompson isn't Angela Lansbury, but she does a good job with the material. THE version of the song will always be Lansbury's, but Thompson ain't a slouch either. I'm expecting there to be a lot of YouTube videos putting Lansbury's version in on the full scene in the future though.
Final note on the music: I almost miss the super in-your-face pop versions that Disney usually comes up with for their movies (Peabo Bryson/Celine Dion version of the title song, for example). Alan Menken probably vetoed that with the Celine Dion version of How Does A Moment Last Forever and the Josh Groban version of Evermore. And thankfully so.

It's really overblown. LeFou definitely has a thing for Gaston, but it's not like he's straight up crawling all over him. It's probably insulting to Josh Gad's work to have it summarized simply as "he's gay for Gaston."
I would marry Emma Watson in a heartbeat but let's be honest, her passing on La La Land was probably a good thing. Emma Stone killed it.

To be fair, the negative reviews still say it's a good film, it's just a lifeless remake of the original. Most fans will probably be happy. It's going to make a lot of money.

I can't believe people were freaking out about the whole "gay scene". It isn't ever explicitly stated and it can be taken as a fun playful joke considering the circumstances.
Overall, I wish the movie would have been more "unique" and not just a remake of the animated film. I feel like Cinderella took more chances and therefore stood out to me more. This was still fantastic!

I saw the movie today. It was good, obviously it's nothing new or going to wow anybody, but the acting and the visuals were good for the most parts, except for the excessive motion blur in some scenes. The servants really made the movie, Lumiere especially.
As people above said, the snowball fight scene got me chuckling as well

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I just watched it last night:

Yup. Like, had Disney not said anything, you would have laughed at the scene and thought "Josh Gad killing it per usual!" Instead, it's a "So that's what all the fuss was about?"
Whatever. People are dumb.
Oh, one other note - Be Our Guest felt like the whole scene was put together to justify a 3D release. Kind of wish they wouldn't have been SO theatrical as it didn't feel like it fit as well as everything else.

Saw it 14 hours ago and I have to completely agree on this. The 1991 animated film is among my faves of all time so, while extremely excited about a live action adaptation, I definitely had my reservations about it. I'm glad to say that I was smiling from ear to ear by the time the credits rolled. And not just that, people were legit clapping too. That doesn't happen so much where I'm at. The few changes they made were actually good and helped flesh out the characters more. I'm so glad they gave the Beast a solo song and, boy, is his song really good! And that outrage over LeFou is nothing but an overreaction.
A little off-topic: I still prefer Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson's pop version of the song. The new one isn't awful (like the Demi Lovato version of "Let It Go") but something just didn't click with me. Or maybe I just don't like the new singers. LOL
The Peabo Bryson/Celine Dion version is damn good.
My theatre was PACKED. Plenty of people tearing up (heard a lot of sniffling) and clapping in the end. I almost teared up multiple times, not gonna lie.

Just got back from this, and it was an enormous nostalgia trip. I never realized just how many of these songs I knew and loved, nor did I expect how much I enjoyed watching a movie I've seen so many times as a very young child come to life.
I can't say any of the liberties taken made the film better, and I can't say it's better than the original, but damn if it isn't close.

I think the liberties helped at least a little, I mean the movie is mostly slavish to the original and I appreciated the new things especially a particular subplot-- wasn't much to it, but it did add something for me. I felt more connected
to Belle and her father through it and I thought it made Belle's connection with Beast even stronger as he allows her the means to visit that place and learn those things
Again it's not much, but it worked.

Belle didn't like being kept in the castle, and the only reason she was trying to be nice was because of the attendants, and when given a chance to go home she did go home and only came back when she heard of Gaston's plan.

Found out the IMAX print is using the whole screen size instead of just having black bars. So I'm curious on if it will make it look even better.

It sounds like you went in with fair expectations and came out pleased with the film. There's some mega hate going around on the web and I think people are finding ways to dislike the film.

I thought Be Our Guest was beautifully animated. It bothered me that everyone had an English accent. They cut out the hairy chest line from Gaston's song, which was a bummer.
The gay scenes were super cute (the last one was perfect). And the shirtless scene with the Beast...whew, I was SWEATING. Lord!!!
