Persona Community Thread |OT9| SPOILER TAGS OR DIE

What I don't get about the controller skin is why are they only announcing it now? Since John is in the video, it was probably in the works for at least a month. Likely longer since they had a workable version at the time of filming. But aren't pre-order/launch bonuses the kind of thing you want to put out there as soon as possible? Especially if they're artificially limited to certain editions, knowing what edition has what might change which version you want. Hell, I didn't even know there was a non-steelbook PS4 launch copy until they put that video out. And I'm interested enough to post in a Persona thread semi-regularly!

It seems like Atlus Japan and Atlus USA are starting to adopt some similar business practices; it's just a shame that includes making weird decisions.

Yeah, same here. While Aigis will always be my favorite character, the Phantom Thieves are my favorite cast. You really have to play the game to see it, but they're just an all around fantastic ensemble of characters. I couldn't go into more details without being spoilerific tho.
Even their traits might lead to one figuring out the story beats of the game? Who ever thought such mischievous thievery can be so coy.

It seriously feels that way. I was still in college when this game was out living in my shitty apartment.

HEY! So a couple people have told me that the new guy in control is Will (you) and I feel like I hafta give a warm welcome to ya!

It's probably a fair criticism that Persona 5 plays it a bit too safe to the formula, especially when the key dev staff literally went and created a new mini team specifically to work on a different project so they could have more flexibility*

But of course it's totes fair that they decided to play it safe with their first big HD project.

*And since it's a fantasy game rather than a modern game, I guess you could say they're breaking free from society's expectations of them :D

I don't even mind it playing it too safe at this point, I need my escapism ;_;

It also helps that no one else does what they do with even a tenth of the quality.

I'm hesitant to agree with this, considering some folks here seem to really like Trails of Cold Steel (which I hear is pretty Persona-ish)

Uh....

Hmm.

The game's good quality, yeah but I'm more hesitant to suggest TOCS to people than I am Persona, but that's likely because of the setting than anything else. And some other things.

I think I just feel like TOCS is more likely to set off someone 'too anime 5 me' radar.

There often seems to be a very low bar for what's considered "Persona-ish" these days.

Not that Cold Steel doesn't have elements that are very reminiscent of Persona, because it does, much moreso than some other games I've seen compared to Persona. But it's also just as much a Trails game, with it's own priorities, and often goes for different things.

It also has it's own strengths, like every NPC around the school having their own story which develops over the course of the game.

If you want to be a successful "Persona-like", for lack of a better term, you need a ton of resources because one of the core strengths of 3 and 4, at least for me, is the length. And with a strong cast of characters you really grow to like them over the course of a 100 hour campaign, and that requires a lot of writing embedded within this quirky social life while also dungeon crawler framework.

Is the "formula" and "what they do" thing we're toeing around being turn-based gameplay? plus social sim? or something else?

The length is a huge deterrent for some people.

Remember long ago when I brought up how Mind Zero tried to imitate Persona 3 but ultimately failed?

NOTMinato and NOTAigis:

There's also a NOTAdachi in the game but I can't find a picture of him. Lol

But hey... Mind Zero did have some kind of cool designs...

I know her boobs are practically being pushed out but her design was cool. Lol

And then there's Yukiko in another life. Lol

I have Mind Zero on my Vita. It had some cool ideas but the execution and presentation is terrible. You can't try to imitate something and have poor execution and presentation. It's a turn off. English VA was also REALLY bad. Like.... CRINGEY BAD. MAKE YOU WANNA MUTE THE GAME BAD.

Might bite on the P3 one. God I love the aesthetic of that game.

This may have been asked before but does anyone know about the P5 trophy list/if it's the same. Is it really spoiler filled or can I look up the Japanese trophy list to get a gist of it to see what I'm going into

I can get legitimate trophy OCD from my anxiety and kind of wish I could turn them off all together for some games

It is the same. Well, it should be.

Goddamn I need that P4 one

I bit on all three. LOL.

I don't know what's worse, your obnoxious need to point out how bad CS is on a near constant basis or the fact that you unironically think you can make an informed decision on how good a game like Cold Steel is despite only playing 2 hours of it.
I did this just for you

The persona-ish aspects actually feel like the worst aspects of the game. They're badly adopted and feel like a misguided copy cat diluting it's actual strengths of being a trails game. Just my feelings though some people go wild for it but I certainly didn't think walling of character development that's kind of on the lighter side behind a social link like system did any favors. Trails was far stronger when it made character development a core part of the ongoing narrative comparing Cold Steel to the Sky games and Zero although Zero kind of dabbles into Slink stuff and it's already kind of annoying there system wise. For Zero it kind of just walled of the rank 10 event and while annoying it wasn't a huge deal given that you had only a maincast of 3 and most of the major development you see regardless of whoever you choose to bond with.

the 'slink' part of cold steel wasnt there for a story purpose but for you to learn more about the chars you are interested in outside of the main story.

I liked the Persona aspect of Cold Steel. I got to know a lot of the characters during those school days. Unfortunately the second game does away with that and it's one of the reasons that I haven't really played much of it outside of the first 4-5 hours.
Bad game.

Also not very Persona outside of the school setting.

Is there a point behind this? I ask cause you're simply explaining a system that anyone would understand that has played the games while not really addressing anything, makes me confused, I mean I obviously played the games.
In case I wasn't clear the slink system in cold steel came at the cost of having less meaningful character development that is an integral part of the story(in the sense that you learn things that give characters depth naturally while going through the story, instead of it being walled of as an optional section, you could go 2 entire games and not really know anything of consequence about certain characters) while also in general giving less impactful development because it was all optional in the end. I love the cold steel games but it's just fact that nothing you gain out of the Cold Steel bond system even approaches the same kind of complexity/depth that you would get from a full Persona Slink. Most of the bond events are total fluff. It's badly copied and just doesn't really hold a candle to how Estelle, Joshua, Olivier, Sherazarde, Loyd, Tio, Ellie, Randy, etc etc are handled. It needed way more depth which probably would have been too costly or better scrap the system and go back to actually integrating characters well into the story. The bond system pretty much made things like Gaius happen a character that has been of amazingly little consequence so far for being part of 2 games that are each around 50-80 hours. He hopefully gets his time to shine in Sen III.

why do complain about it in CS and not in persona through? Both are almost the in that regard.

Both games introduce you to the base character archtype durign the story and if you are interested in them you can learn more about them through 'slinks'.

And in both games the links unlock battle related helps.

I already spoke about this but to spell it out again Persona does it simply with more depth. Also in persona the dungeons generally serve as main story points for the main cast to give them more depth in addition to the Slinks fleshing them out in a meaningful way and not just inconsequential fluff.

The Links from CS aren't meaningless either unlike in persona they atleast affect The story a bit, in CS one it changes The ending a bit and in cs2 some interactions with you. And you pretend as if the chars In CS don't get any interesting development outside of the Links, which is just not true. And instead of dungeon you go to their home town in CS 1 where they get an own char arc.

That doesn't make any sense. Cold Steel is a ridiculously busy game, and it just couldn't afford to develop its massive 10+ main party cast equally. FC/SC had a much smaller cast to work with, which was resulted in more development being spread across it's core cast. The point of the bond system is literally just that; it wasn't to develop their characters, but to spend time with said characters, and to get their perspective on recent events. They're different from slinks, which followed a linear path, and they had the advantage of avoiding the "the protagonist solves their problems for them!" as a result. This meant they weren't tethered by time restrictions, since the narrative was ongoing. (You could do Elliot's 4th bond event and not feel lost at all). Their removal literally wouldn't change anything.

This is way too hyperbolic. I like social links as much as the next person, but they're nowhere near as deep as you're implying. There are bad ones (Kenji, Nurse, etc) and they have their own flaws, such as of sectioning off character development (which resulted in it not being reflected in the main narrative.) Not sure why you're blaming the the bond system for what happened to Gaius, since they're unrelated. They just didn't give him much to work with. Like, I'm fairly certain Ao/Zero had bond scenes as well, which simply proves my point.

Even spoiled rotten, I'm interested in finding out the little things.

I did what I could to stay spoiler free, but a handful of things went wrong and now I know:
  • What Makoto and Haru's Ultimate Personas look like.
  • That they go to the US at some point in the game.
  • Someone gets shot in the head.
  • The identity of the 'the person who betrays the thieves.'
  • What Rivers in the Desert sounds like.
I've been told that I should be fine and that there are more, bigger twists I still don't know, so my jimmies aren't nearly as rustled as they could be. I'm still excited to experience:

  • All of the story I don't know. (General, Twists, Finale etc.)
  • All of the Confidant Links & Side Stories.
  • All of the new dungeons and mechanics.
  • All of the new day to day content.
  • All of the new music.
I mean, it still puts a dampener of my hype, but it's Persona 5, dammit, still excited.

Yeah, you'll be fine. You haven't been spoiled too badly.

Here's what I had ruined how fucked am I

goro is a traitor, Igor is a fake

Hmmm...

Well, I'd like to be clever and say "just the tip"...
But you got hit pretty bad.
At least there's plenty to it, and experiencing it yourself should still be an experience.

Welp, I accidentally tapped on that black bar. ;_;
Only read one part of it. I need to just avoid anything Persona related until the game is finally out.
