So how bad is the Switch stock situation?

Last night someone on the stock site said that they randomly got one of 6-5 that were at a Bestbuy I pass on my way to work (I never see them on the stock sites so I never stop there) so I decided to stop there 14 mins after they opened up before getting to work. Got it, a warranty AND Zelda!

the hunt is over ...

That makes a lot more sense than the people saying it's unclaimed preorders. Which as I said upthread seemed like crazy talk.

Fwiw this could be true since customers have 1 month to finish paying off their pre order and pick up their switch. That said in my small store we only had 1 of our 7 pre ordered units not picked up that morning, because the person was on their off pay period but was there that day asking how long we'd hold it :p

So I bought a used switch from amazon warehouse should I keep it or try my luck tomorrow for a new one?

I mean, I'm not one for buying used but a used switch? What was it used, once? Worst case scenario it's 3 weeks old. Not sure what they charged you, but like I said I don't really buy used. I'd rather wait for stock to replenish even if it's a few more weeks

Amazon warehouse is usually a dinged box. It's basically new unless you care about the condition of the box.

Buy almost all my consoles this way - never had an issue.

Got some deets on the Amazon restock. Hooooo bay bee

I checked Amazon and realized that Mario Kart jumped to 4th hourly.

Why so early lol. Anyways I think it has the potential to outsell Wii U version in its lifetime. Assuming the Switch continues to succeed.

Or maybe I'm just crazy

I hope you PMing us members so we can hopefully get one.

I feel bald spots forming from anxiety about not finding a Switch until next year.

That NYC store picture from today just makes it worse.

Fine, friend who runs reviews for a moderately popular site said, via "Emails and press releases," that Amazon will be getting them back in stock tomorrow. Not tryna be Wario64 here (which is why I assumed not sharing would increase my chances; I'm pretty sure NeoGAF isn't changing that too much either way). I trust the dude enough as a buddy that he came to me as someone who wants a Switch asap with this.

Good luck and g'night!

Cool beans. Didn't expect you to step up with the info, sorry for jumping down your throat like that.

Just picked one up in Walmart here in Little Rock. I had called two hours earlier asking if there was stock, because Brickseek showed 3, and the associate said they had two left. Spent a couple of hours thinking about it, and watching a movie, before deciding to head out there.

It wasn't set out, and since passed 10pm, electronics section not really staffed. Eventually asked a manager if there were any Switches left, and he said he would check in the back. About 4 mins later, came out with one and said I "was lucky...received 3 that day, and this was the last one."

He just handed it to me, and I walked all the way to self checkout to checkout. Thought these things had to be brought to the front by the attendant. :0 Associates were watching me, like what has he got there? Kiosk asked me to input serial #, never had to do that before. Then service plan, which I declined.

So if you don't see any set out behind the glass, ask someone for help to check stock.

Haha, nah you're good. I realized what I did was pretty sophomoric and couldn't really understand why other than me wanting more chances for myself. All I ask is no one jump down my throat if it's incorrect, but I'm certainly gonna be checking all day tomorrow.

Amazon's situation is pretty ridiculous. It never gets stock and at the same time shamelessly endorse scalpers.

Is there a way to turn off 3rd party sellers? I just want to be able to click buy when they have stock and just have it be as fast as possible.

local walmart popped up with stock a bit ago on brickseek so I jetted over there, but it's not a 24hr walmart, so they told me the stock would be available at 6am. I guess I'm going to bed early in the hopes that they would actually hold it until tomorrow and not just sell it to someone persistent about them digging them out tonight...

That literally makes no sense.
The main driver for Switch adoption is Zelda BotW which is also present on WiiU.
Do WiiU owners like buying hardware that much or something?

Hmmm, e3 2006 tells a really different story.
People were plenty excited for Wiisports.
I'll dig up gaf we shoudl have enough to show

People called Wii Sports a glorified tech demo and a N64 game. The motion controls got praised, but outside of that, it was called a tech demo, not a real game by many online users.

Man, Wii Sports was not a 1-2 Switch. It was beloved right away. The Wii was hot fire right away. It didn't take weeks or even days. There was heaps of hype and heaps of naysayers pre-launch like most systems, but the mainstream press were alllllll over Wii and Wii Sports. The comparison to 1-2 Switch is very weak. 1-2 Switch had, has, and will always have no hype. Its parallel is Wii Play if anything.

Are there any further details on Gamestop's tweet about more stock on 3/22? I called two local stores each on the 20th and 21st. both were polite but had no idea about the tweet other than what people like myself were saying.

I said that must be frustrating and they both laughed. But ya, all they said was sorry, there's nothing i can say since there's nothing I know. Just call back, basically.

They did make it sound like they didn't expect any kind of large shipment. more NES Classic like...just a handful per store.

They are not getting more than a handful unless it is a giant store.

My local Walmarts got restock yesterday. Might want to check brickseek and your local Walmarts. Sharing for those that still want one.

Uh, this thing it going to blow past the Wii U. And no, I actually don't necessarily figure that most of the current Switch buyers or would-be buyers are Wii U owners. I'm not.

I can't believe people are still acting like the Switch selling more than the Wii U is still in doubt.

Uh, I know that. That's why I said see "how long it will take" rather than "if it will" pass the WiiU.

That literally makes no sense.

It literally does, when you think that the Nintendo diehards are the ones who mostly bought the WiiU and will be the first to buy the new hardware and play Zelda on it rather than WiiU. Just like many Nintendo fans opted for the Wii version of TP instead of just getting the GCN version.

Sweet tapdancing Jesus...
Have you ever worked in production of any kind? Then you should know that there i no such thing as increasing production over night.
For example : you want to produce more switches, then you need to produce more plastic parts. You need moulds, so that is 8-12 weeks at best. And since no factory worth its name has machines standing empty , waiting for Nintendo to call, you either wait until the factory/ies has production time to sell or you invest in a machine. That is 3 months if the machine is anything customized.
So at the three month mark you have produced 0 extra parts for switches.
You have to do a Production Part Approval Process , so that is another week.
All this is for increasing the production of just the plastic parts.
Now i imagine that Nintendo is faster than this, but anything close to 1 month is amazing.

How do i know this? I manage a plant that is producing plastic parts.

And for the "open more factories" crowd : call any quality machine producer for injection molding and say you want 6-8 Big customized machines "fast" and watch as their fast is in a diffrent dimension than your.

And i bet that noone that uses the artificial scarcity argument has ever worked in a sales position. Demand is there now, maybe not next week or month, so any product that is not on shelves right now is a potentially lost sale.
Nintendo did not run a successful company for more than 100 years by gambling.

I'm not sure why you replied to my comment with this. I never said I expected Nintnedo to magically have more switches appear over night. I was saying that Nintendo has a track record for supply shortages and I listed a few examples of that. All of which, were true.

Obviously you can't ramp up production over night and have a million more units on the shelves in a week. But Nintendo seems to be super conservative when it comes to projecting sales. Do you really think Nintendo believes, they wouldn't sell 3 million switches over its entire existence? This product isn't perishable, having a larger initial stock and then slowing down production if the sales aren't what they wanted seems like a better solution to me, but whatever my opinion you can disagree all you want.
To your point, it's launch hardware, scarcity is expected. It's how long it takes Nintendo to adjust stock just seems really slow compared to Sony and Microsoft

Let me ask you this. When's the last time you saw a standard edition PS4 or Xbox one game sell for above retail because of scarcity? I really can't think of any. But with Nintendo, I remember at one point both Mario Galaxy games, Ocarina 3DS, Mario 64 DS, Bayonetta 2, MARIO all stars Wii etc were all being sold by third parties above retail because you just couldn't find the games. Over time they would either became more readily available or Nintendo would drop a selects version for 20 bucks or whatever, but the time they were hard to find wasn't a week or two. They were pretty long stretches of time. How is it that in 2017 (or I'll be more liberal here and say even in 2012) you can't keep games in stock after the first few initial shipments.

I'm sorry but it just rubs me the wrong way.

.

I just don't see how the amount of time it takes the Switch to pass the Wii U is much of a metric, especially in terms of doing Wii numbers, which was the context of my post. I don't know why you'd compare it to anything other than the Wii itself.

Uh my experience is pretty different, just look at the review scores for Wii Sports to see how nobody really got it. There was some interest from the mainstream press, but they only got all over it later, when researchers started implementing it in nursing homes and especially around Wii fit. Sure it was much more hype than 1-2 Switch, but the first half year to a year the Wii sold to core gamers.

I don't think this is true at all. Right from the moment the wii releases (before that actually) it was getting heaps of mainstream press. Casual gamers were all over it from the start. I have no idea how it reviewed but the general public loved wii sports right from the start and that's what drove sales.

Went by the Target today that an employee told me "might" be getting stock today - no dice. Dejected, I check iStockNow on a whim and see the Target across town listed as having some (4) available. Hustle over there, and they had ONE left just 20 minutes after opening. Employee said they "weren't supposed" to get them until Saturday. Whatever, don't care. My search has ended!

Moral of the story: iStockNow's live map is a great feature and everyone should be using it.

Good luck to the rest of you! :)

There hasn't been shit in SW PA using iStock. A bunch of false Walmart positives, and one target far out had like 4 that popped up this morning and are now gone.
