Common misconceptions that you believed for a long time

I'll start by saying that for a long time until a few years ago, I thought egg yolks directly increased cholesterol, and so I largely avoided them. Now, as I understand it, high cholesterol seems to be primarily linked to genetics and eating cholesterol-laden foods such as eggs will not adversely affect your levels. Now I'll eat the entire egg and not just the egg white.

If you ate a seed, for example a orange seed, a tree would grow out of your anus. I believed that for a long time, as a kid that is. Should clarify that. Not anymore... No. Not anymore... *whistles*

Also believed the same thing with watermelon seeds. Was afraid an enormous watermelon would grow inside my stomach. My parents even told me that and I don't understand why they chose to petrify me.

Parent's are horrible. They love to see kids in shear terror. Sadists the lot of em.

when you blow on fire ashes, it grows red. i used to believe smokers blow on cigarettes and magically smoke would come out of their mouths.

For 17 years I thought the Earth was flat.

Oooooooooo this is interesting to me because assuming you think the Earth is a sphere now and not some other polygon, can you explain to us what made you think so at the time? Did you look at all of the evidence and photography and outright dismiss it or lie to yourself? How did you reconcile this belief? I'm genuinely curious.

I thought blood was blue while it's in your veins, and only turns red when it's exposed to oxygen. People at school used to say that all the time, so I just assumed it was true.

I used to think racism was on the decline.

Nooope. Turns out it was still widespread but was just hiding.

I used to think that expiration dates on food were meaningful and backed by science

Edit: Also the vitamin C for colds and the 10% of our brains thing above.

What? Why? :D

Well they are backed by science, enough science to know at which point a company must defer responsibility for the safety of their products (that is the point at which things can become slightly potentially bad) and still make profit not selling a product that they say lasts too little time.

There was a bombcast segment about this.

I actually did not know this. Hmm. I mean the responsibility aspect of it. I just thought companies tested and said, after a certain period of time, the likelyhood of the item being spoiled goes up so much, we can't sell it.

Oh, I did as well!

Heh. Like I literally believed the pill from Limitless could be a reality and some drug would make you smarter or sharper. It was a nice fantasy.

That the adults in the baby boomer generation were smart and knew what they were doing.

Word. Similarly believed in "American dream" BS for a long time before I realized how many people were simply out to fuck other people over in anyway they can and how many others fuck people over without even realizing it.

I used to think I was liberal.

What happened?

I consider myself a liberal but if this last election taught me anything, it's that some people on the fringe left won't consider me so because of my stance that progress, unfortunately, happens at a slower, compounding pace and that compromises have to be made in many instances to get anywhere. To some people I've spoken to in person, this attitude isn't liberal enough or liberal at all. It's either all or nothing to them.

Well that was taught in many schools so yeah, I thought this as well.

As I understand it, while all parts of the tongue can perceive the same taste, it's that each section is more sensitive to a particular one.

Such a poorly thought out diagram, so common in classrooms even today! Although I'm talking up to my teenage years when I realised it made no sense.

That chewing gum will stay in your stomach for years or some shit like that.

Makes no logical sense if you actually stop and think about it.

We had a whole thread about it. Seems to be a common misconception in certain regions or cultural backgrounds to some degree.

Yea. A lot of Europeans I know wash their meat (my parents certainly did and still do). I was raised to think that it needs to be washed. Although I can recognize how asinine it may sound now and that cooking it is what actually kills the bacteria, I still do it out of paranoia. It's deeply ingrained in me and I simply don't feel comfortable unless I give it a quick rinse.

High cholesterol is sometimes tied to liver health especially when looking at the characteristics of the LDL, not dietary cholesterol. Basically if you're obese the entire body is off.

I used to belive I had the ability to see slightly into the future but only on neogaf threads because of all the weirdos who edit their posts to quote people who posted after them.
