Kept Stalin in power for decades!

Yeah, but Stalin wasn't half-assin' his purges. Back then, people knew how to kill their political opponents and rivals.

Ryan is toast if there is even one other Republican who wants to be speaker. But is there? Only people I see sniping at his piss-poor leadership are in the White House.

No Republican wants him to resign right now, even the HFC. If he does, that adds to the shit show and keeps them from moving on to their next catastrophe.

The tax law is going to be a fiasco. It might seem on the surface that they all want cuts to everything, but we also thought they all wanted to repeal ACA and we saw how that went.

The FC knows they can make ridiculous demands and Ryan either caves or has another bill die under his watch. And they'll just keep making more and more demands.

Its not that.. NO ONE WANTS THE SPEAKERSHIP... They practically had to beg him to be Speaker.. Being the speaker with a Republican Majority is the worst job in Washington right now.

Corporate tax cuts should be the one thing the tea partiers and the senate moderates can both get behind!

The debt ceiling fiasco is gonna be so bad. Poor our country.

You'd think so, but we'll see.

"NO TAX CUTS UNTIL YOU END SOCIAL SECURITY" I don't think is out of the realm of demands they make.

And yes, the debt ceiling is going to be a crisis, and that's likely where Ryan will duck out (like Boehner did)

How many governor's mansions in states that haven't expanded Medicaid are up for grabs in 2018? That's what Democrats should focus on.

It was a few pages back, but Conservatives REALLY need to watch throwing around "cuck" now.

As people said it definitely has taken on a racial element, a bizarre one, in which white guys are afraid that "others", especially black guys, will steal their girls...though not necessarily a girl they're involved with, really any potential mate they see as being taken away from them "unfairly".

The dude who was going to kill, and did, black men in NY I recall apparently had that fear as his main motivator...so it's evolved beyond a silly term thrown around into one that's apparently speaking to deep-seated insecurities in white men, so regardless of channers claiming it "doesn't mean anything!" like they say about how they used to throw around "fag" in much the same way, it definitely DOES and professional politicians resorting to using it like brought up earlier need to realize the people they're speaking to aren't those they want to be associated with.

I'm undecided on Corporate Taxes because of the "race to the bottom". Might as well just hit the floor and find another way. A way that taxes business activity inside the country.

The US Consumer Market still holds enough power to tax the supply chain, if companies want to sell products in the US, then they have to pay something.

I'm even less decided on what degree that something should be. But the tax code as it stands currently benefits large companies and hurts smaller ones.

Is there any good documentaries about the ACA and how it passed etc.,? I never really paid attention to politics as much as I do now so I never followed it as much as I would have knowing everything I do today.

Thanks

Quick version: The house did their job, the Senate got bogged down by a bunch of conservative Dems (Baucus, Nelson, Lieberman, etc.) who have since lost their seats and it was in danger of stalling out until Ted Kennedy croaked, endangering the supermajority and forcing them to get a bill through on the spot.

Sunday morning TV is going to be fun.

Thanks for all the informed commentary on these big moments, PoliGAF. It's appreciated by us lurkers.

After Trump was elected, I assumed it was obvious his presidency would be a combination of Nixon's corruption, Bush's incompetence, and although I hate comparing him with Trump, Carter's ineffectiveness.

Holy shit, that Trump address today. Basically "It's all Democrats' fault, but this is actually a good thing. We can let it explode and then maybe Democrats will come to the table to fix it."

You're going to let it explode and then try to blame Democrats? You and the Republicans control the government, you asshat. You're choosing to let Americans be fucked over by this "death spiral" rather than fixing it and you want us to blame Obama? How the fuck do you pass yourself as a champion of the little people?

Props to journalists for being on fire so quickly after the aftermath.

This was my favorite gem today, from Rep. Joe Barton (R) of Texas...

You'd also need at least a majority of the state legislature to go along with it, which is why Virginia still doesn't have it, but the list would be as ranked by likelihood of victory:

VA (it's 2017 tho)
ME
WI
FL
TX
KS
and then basically all of the deep red plains, mountain west, or southern states that don't have it, so all of the south except LA and AR, SD, NE, OK, WY, ID. There's also the state legislature for NC, which we have a Democratic governor for but not enough legislative power to pass it through in.

His supporters will get filtered news that Trump somehow saved healthcare or something.

The guy on Maher right now is fucking not having any of it. Dude is deadly serious saying democracy is about to get destroyed and he is intentionally not laughing about it. Man this episode is fire tonight.

Trump's going to be the next Jimmy Carter at this point minus the near landslide popular vote loss in the next election.

Carter actually was neck-and-neck until Anderson surged and took a large portion of the left vote from people dissatisfied with how close to the center he was, I'm not sure if he would've won but it would've been very close if they hadn't broken to Anderson.

Yeah when he goes off the edge on Anti-religion he starts loosing me. I mean I am an atheist, but being an atheist doesn't mean I don't understand the role of Religion in society and why people would gravitate towards it.
