Starcraft Remastered confirmed [Summer 2017]. Original SC/BW to be free!

Re-recorded dialogue surely heralds a few changes in the voice cast, especially as Jack Ritschel (Zeratul, Edmund Duke) has since passed away. Some will be brought in line with the SC2 cast, I would expect.

Some of the remastered art (like the Hive) does look a little shiny, and a bit of a departure from the desaturated look that games like Factorio have managed to capture just fine in their 3D renders.

imagine if they replaced glynnis talken campbell (bw kerrigan) with sc2 kerrigan (tricia helfer)

Could be, but this does not explain how 3D strategy games feel.. heavy. It is like they're less responsive even with sufficiently powerful computer. No idea if it s the animations or what.

Doesn't which series but the 2D games just feel better.

Well, ignoring stuff like usually worse pathfinding. Dear overlord how terrible the Hydralisk, Goliath and Dragoon pathfinding in original Starcraft are...

I said i want, i didn't say i'm getting them :/

Hell, EA ignores whole C&C series as it is. Generals 2 looked pretty good but EA went and said nope. Fucking EA :/

3D RTSes do have the intrinsic advantages of terrain deformation and verticality being much simpler... but they're criminally underutilized.

Revised dialogue and audio doesn't make me happy if it means what I think it means.

Glad that the rest of the game seems to be intact (fine with the up-res for the most part) but please, for the love of god, do not make changes purely to make SC1 more 'consistent' with SC2 when it still blows that game away from a writing and acting standpoint.

Please no. Tricia was okay in SCII but she is no Kerrigan.

yea that would be bad

plus campbell is alive and well so there's no need for a replacement

she was the medic too so they have to bring her back for that if they're rerecording all the dialogu

Looking forward to better observer options for pro play, with all the information they added in SC2's observer mode its a pain having to guess about everything in BW's.

man, can't wait to see how the esports scene will look like with this game.

It depends entirely on Korea, and I'm not absolutely convinced they'll make the jump, though Blizzard has an obvious incentive to put some pressure on organizations like AfreecaTV (mandating the remaster as a condition of the broadcast license, for instance). They have leverage over the use of their game now that they didn't when KeSPA was running everything independently.

Which is why making the original free-to-play with official support for Fish is very, very smart. It provides an exit plan, so you don't wind up with a scenario where Blizzard pressures everyone into a version that people in Korea don't want to play. And with things like observer features being patched into the original BW, it does seem like it will be maintained as a stopgap "e-sports version" until the remaster gains enough traction to be the voluntarily accepted standard.

Outside of Korea we'll see streams and minor tournaments, I'm sure, but let's not kid ourselves: the culture/infrastructure aren't there to produce a competitive field capable of generating players that can stand against the Koreans.

Does now a bigger area fit on the screen?

This is my main "complaint" about the old StarCraft that I don´t like the tiny window anymore on my 23" LCD.

That mega map one made me chuckle.

I played SC to death back in the day, I think I prefer the grungy pixel look of the old version.

But will definitely buy this.

It is a remaster so modern resolutions are given.

Up to 4k resolution it seems... So yeah, it won't be tiny anymore.

By the way, one thing from the trailer and official release that sticks out: "LAN and modern online play."

I'm impressed. I was seriously expecting Blizzard to throw LAN under the bus.

So, reading reddit, it looks like they are litterally just slapping a new GUI on top of the old game, to the extent you can play multiplayer between the remaster and original version.

Oh baby.

I'm gonna laugh how many newbs come to BW from playing SC2 and being in a major shock on how hard the gameplay actually is. No more F2 baby. I remember playing a few years ago on Iccup and some guy making me quit with just drone micro. He was just fucking with me and we both knew it. It has caused infinitely more Rage quits than SC2 ever has.

Be sad when my marines no longer feel like super men anymore.

Yup, I'm expecting a lot of tears on reddit. Hopefully Blizzard doesn't listen to any of them.

MM is nice, but it will be nothing but pros after 2 weeks. If people think SC2 is too intimidating online wait until they try BW matchmaking lol

You mentioned that SC:R will be available in up to 4k. How will the field of vision and resolution be like? Will the unit to screen ratio be maintained, or will the field of vision look bigger—hence making the units smaller? Can you provide more specific examples?

The screen ratio has been maintained. Your field of view is still that of Brood War. The client supports play in 4:3 or widescreen – and switching between them on the fly – without missing a beat. This switching between 4:3 standard def or widescreen HD can happen back and forth with just the press of a button.

StarCraft: Remastered is able to achieve this effect as it uses all the same gameplay code as Brood War. This means that Dragoons and Goliaths are still a bit derpy in how they react to movement commands. The Reaver’s shot doesn’t always find a target. Mutas stack.

The fact is that the gameplay is identical enough that old replays from 1.16 will play and work just fine under StarCraft: Remastered.

The Team Liquid interview (which provides a lot of details I'm still sorting through, by the way) indicates that the remaster will be able to process old replays from classic BW, but I don't see anything about live interoperability.

This is the conservative approach the community wanted, and automatic matchmaking will be by far the most impactful addition. It makes BW on a ladder with strangers casually playable again, which it really never was even back in 1998.

I hope this comes with the map editor, or supports the old editor. Might actually try making some maps, Starcraft's map editor is the only i ever learned to use.

Team Liquid interview screenshots confirms updated portrait. The probe and SCV look great, the adjutant and guardian not so much tho the screens are too small to tell just yet.

I think the remastered visuals strayed too close to the original and in HD, it kinda looks dated.

I actually would have preferred a 3D remake using the Starcraft 2 engine. I never thought of the visuals of SC2 being a weak point, just the game itself didn't feel interesting.

It's the last quote there:

Players will be able to connect and play, watch replays, or share saved games seamlessly between free Brood War, and the SC:R upgrade. It’s all the same client! Each player and observer in the game can opt to play in standard or high def individually, and you can switch instantly and seamlessly at the press of a button right inside the game or while watching a replay.

Looks like they definitely updated the portraits.

Seems to fit the updated graphics style so far.

Gotta say sound is my biggest worry. Starcraft may not have had the most original sound (a lot of stock sounds, you know "Doom Doors" etc.) but as a whole, it was distinctive.

And dialogue is whole another matter... The original had superb cast, i think, in that the characters all had distinctive voice that just... fit them right.

I swear to god, if they touch any of the voice acting or dialogue to retcon SC2 to be less fucking terrible...

Sound, fine.

But Brood War is perfect sci-fi camp. Don't touch that shit. And don't you dare put Helfer in the game.

You know, that scream is still horrifying after all these years.

What the hell do they do to the Ghosts?

Yeah. Imma think people need to bombard Blizzard about that. Might still have time...

Disappointed they kept it identical instead of making modern improvements to the campaign. Tried going back to them awhile ago and they don't hold up well.
