Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology first trailer

Well, the music sounds a lot better, at least. A shame about the art style.

Edit: Correction. I compared to the original soundtrack and the music is unchanged. Come on, guys. Loose the purse strings a little!

The game looks almost exactly (exactly?) the same, character art changed for no reason. Unless the new changes on more portraits, the new character, and new scenario are great, this seems a hard sell. Particularly so late on 3DS life.

Edit: and voice acting.

Man could you imagine this game remade with in full 3D? I dunno if it was the translation but it's easily one of the most engrossing JRPG stories out there. Really loved it.

I still can't forgive what they've done to Eruca. The new art and animation really gives off a different vibe. I actually liked the static portraits as they added to the melancholic vibe of the original. Still, more Radiant Historia, even with a few misguided changes, is a good thing.

Between the art style change and music in this trailer and the...witch girl waifu (?) this screams of atlus screwing with the game to make it more appealing to a typical anime loving audience. More power to them for wanting a wider audience but I'll stick with my original copy.

What? The game pretty much looks the same but they've made the character designs worse?

Why? This was my favourite DS game :(

Players are supposedly able to switch between the different portraits if they have the suitable DLC.

DS version sprites all the way if possible.

I 've accepted the portrait changes.

What matters to me now is that the sub - history story is good.

If you want to get me hyped, this is where your work should go.

Huh, no change in graphics? Why are they calling this a remake?

And the art is way worse.

DS version remains superior.

If not for the new portraits then what exactly does version add again? I mean I can already play the DS original on my 3DS. Any word on extra content? And also the amount of hours etc if any?

There's a new character and also a new sub-story to explore.

Voice acting, for one, is also being added and apparently most if not all of the scenes are fully voiced. Of course, if you want a more detailed breakdown, I suggest that you can try Gematsu's article on the game.

Sal Romano's always doing a great job on that site of his.

There's a new character and a new sub scenario of which the character plays an important role. Also new difficulty options and full voice acting.

Edit beaten etc etc

Those new portraits look well drawn but super generic, the older ones look less beautiful but they've got a more grit and character to them. Which suited the game.

Then again...

Players are supposedly able to switch between the different portraits if they have the suitable DLC.

DS version sprites all the way if possible.

This is great, if true! Why not both?

No good.

The only design that was kinda cool was majestic Rosch but everyone else is bad. It's like the game lost its personality with the generic vocal theme tune and new are to appeal to the masses. Also VERY disappointed that almost nothing was done to the in game sprites. THOSE should have been redrawn, not the talking sprites!

Agreed. If anything, the original Radiant Historia art style was one of the things that made it so unique and memorable. It had a dark edge to it, almost comic-book style, was atypical of other JRPG designs, and stood out.

The heavy blacks of every character created some truly stunning portrait art. It fit the tone of the game as well, being quite a bit more somber and grounded than a lot of contemporary JRPGs.

I find it... telling... that they're releasing the original art for the remaster as paid DLC and not just including it in the game. They know players would prefer the old art, but if they want it, they'll need to pay extra for it. It's not like they lost the old art assets. They're easily found online in high resolution.

I JUST beat Radiant Historia for the first time just last week, the day before they announced the remaster/remake. With it so fresh in my mind, I'm not saying any significant improvements. The in-game graphics needed it more than the portrait art, and the soundtrack is stunning but Shimomura's music deserves a remaster or rerecording as well to get the most out of her arrangements.

Edit: However, if the 3DS version is the only version available to you, the game is still good enough to warrant a playthrough, even with the art alterations. I love it to pieces. I'd just have preferred some more actual in-game enhancements.

Eruca's redesign is really disappointing. Not really fond of the art style either. The originals were really nice. I'm looking forward to hearing the soundtrack though.

I don't think it's just an Atlus thing but modern JRPGs have the *worst* DLC plans. Shit is infuriating.

I probably would have bought this if the original art was included. Now, I'll just dig out my DS.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Reminds me of the hideous redesigns we saw for the Vita version of Little King's Story. Selling the original art as DLC is a hilariously cynical move.

Still have yet to play the original DS game and I was going to buy this for the extra content. I'm not too sure now considering the art style changes. It's not bad but it does look generic and pandering to a certain demographic. Selling the original art style as DLC is a scumbag move too, considering you're basically saying to the fans "yeah we COULD have focused on the original art and cleaned it up a bit for the 3ds. But nope, enjoy our generic portraits."

I hope a new generation enjoys the game, but I sadly don't see the appeal as somebody who owns the original.

I suppose it was too much to hope for a 3D facelift. Not that the original 2D sprite work was bad, but if I want the original, I'll just slot it into my 3DS.
