Oculus Co-Founder and Rift Creator Palmer Luckey Departs Facebook

wow 3 years already
well the VR space didn't change much in that timeframe.
feels like yesterday, when oculus was sold to facebook

He'll move onto some new tech venture and end up in the public eye again in a few years, I'm sure. Memories are short, and the extent to which the broader public cares about what he's said or done is rather overstated.

He is insanely rich and going to live a life most of us could only dream of so hardly cause for so much celebration. Plus nearly eveything you buy will be made by some shithead. Many remain at Oculus probably...

I think he's a fucking tool but this doesn't seem like a victory.

I can't wait till that phrase dies.

This was just a matter of time. Doesn't surprise me. Enjoy your millions (billions?)

I don't know who this guy is (probably some alt right POS?) so I don't want to side with him, but he ain't wrong.

If Palmer lost hundreds of millions by being forced to donate it to good causes/charities which we know he stands against, that'd hurt. Our words? Nope.

Former IGN/Kinda Funny dude who caters to that audience. His podcast was called "Colin Was Right" if that gives you an idea about who he is.

did it hurt his money situation? probably not. did it hurt his standing in the industry among his peers? probably. being nominated as and winning the hottest mess of 2016 ain't the best look.

Colin not holding back anymore I see.

Soon people will be very embarrassed to have put up a fight for him.
I can't fucking wait for this, but sadly with internet/anonymity there might not be much hope.

Trash attracts trash; Moriarty ever so quick to jump on that Luckey defense.

Being on a yacht, travelling around the world, surrounded by beautiful women, probably makes him forget what the Duders named him on some podcast...

No.. I only listen to Giant Bomb and Idle Thumbs haha.

Good. I think people need to give the Rift more chances.

Nah, they still defended him, didn't condemn their child molester, and they're trying to make VR a closed ecosystem.

If someone wants to support Facebook that's on them, but it's not like they're clean now.

He made bank and moved on.
I wonder if OR can even survive at this point.
Valve can always keep experimenting with vr since they make bank with steam.
I wont be sad if Oculus went under. I rather have one unified vr on pc instead of the current shitshow.

So basically Colin is saying "You are not allowed to punch up, but I'm allowed to punch down."

So nothing new about his views.

---

On topic, it seems likely that Oculus had to keep Luckey around until end of fiscal year. Timing is heavily suspicious.

Yeah, I was waiting for this after the lawsuit concluded. I kinda got the impression they only kept him around because of that ongoing litigation. Obviously that's just speculation though.

Not gonna miss this guy in the games industry.

Y'all serious?

"He has money, therefore your criticism doesn't matter."

Do you realize how sociopathic that sounds?

My assumption is that he's guy who named himself after a famous villain and then decided to be a villain IRL.

The criticism matters, but it's true in that he hasn't been destroyed by what he's done. This isn't really a big win, as fun as it is to think of it as one.

I assume Notch has some sort of depression from the stuff I've seen him post. I don't think he can be used as a 'money doesn't make you happy' argument personally.

I'm not saying that it doesn't matter per se, I think it's good for society to point it out, but do I think he will lose sleep over it with his wealth and freedoms in life? No.

It's more that they actually like Luckey and think he's good and right, and thus want to verbally support him in a way that appears unbiased.
