Perhaps more importantly, there's essentially zero difference between what they'd do this year one way or another given that they've already committed to Xbox One support for all Scorpio titles initially. They can fully intend to move beyond generational incompatibility this year and change their mind down the road, or follow through.

We won't actually know until the console after Scorpio comes out.

I think we will know a lot sooner. The reveal event (or E3 conference) and the console's branding should tell all.

Plans may always change, but it has been stated time and time again that continous back compat like a pc has is what they are planning. Eventually older hardware will become obsolete, obviously. It is not a lot of assumptions at all, imo, and the only plausible way forward given they stick to their words. Naming scheme is another thing entirely, but they have been very clear about their purpose.

What other possibilities do you suggest?

I've got an aching in my bones that Microsoft will be reaching into their (admittedly) limited cache of associated franchises to try and drum up excitement for the Xbox brand. I've been thinking about how they could manage to do this and every time I come back to Knights of the Old Republic (I, II or both) being redone at their expense. With Star Wars being bigger than ever, EA having the license again and it being a critical and commercial success it is the one game that makes sense to bring back for Microsoft. In a world where Sony is cashing in big with fan service year after year it would make sense for Microsoft to try and do the same thing.

Or they could bring back Fuzion Frenzy again (please, no)

I don't think Fable is going to move the needle at all but they could definitely do a couple more games that can come out this time of year because it's pretty bleak. Especially if the third-party stuff isn't great.

I've been calling for a new Splinter Cell. It falls in line with Ubisoft's statements earlier this year saying they wanted to focus on established IPs for a little while and it could be something awesome to show off the Scorpio.

End it with an exclusive teaser.

Black screen / silence
night vision goggles sound stirs up
Iconic 3 green orbs flashes

But sadly I'm expecting the next Splinter cell to be open world. Ubi's game development blueprint these days...

Definitely excited for a new Playground Games game but I highly doubt Fable is popular enough anymore. Also remains to be seen if they work exclusively with MS for this, no announcements on that yet.

I do hope they will for the simple reason that they use the hardware to its full potential. We know Playground can do some great stuff when we look at the Forza Horizon games.

I think that was NERDLEAKS who leaked the full conference , and i don't think they never said something like this. you can check on there twitter.

I remember that some guy working behind the scenes or so got the schedul for ms and sony.
Irc Nerdleaks got stuff too, yes Sony stuff too.. but they havent leaked that because you know kids this gen like to shit on MS.

People here on gaf were begging to whoever got the details that they should not leak the Sony briefing.

Thats all i remember reading here in silence last year.

I doubt Nerdleaks will get any access to the hardware event. They are pretty strict on those events. E3 is a bit different.

Also anyone who follows GAF, would know that there were not really many surprises at the Sony press briefing. It was just well delivered.

No way that's true. Surely not.

The two Star Wars RPG's on the original Xbox were very good. They can keep the same story etc, but re-do all the visuals and it would be pretty incredible. There are a lot of gamers today that probably did not play both games, even if they do the first one, it would be great.

I also think a game like Midtown Madness would be something great to bring back and perhaps Playgrounds second studio is working on that? I do like the idea of them working on Fable 4 however as it would be completely different for them and perhaps that would a good thing.

I would think that Playground would stick with MS. Their whole studio uses technology shared with Turn 10 studios. That is not to say they can venture off and do something for all platforms, but I am sure they owe a lot to MS and Turn 10 and it would just seem odd to me that they would go off and not lock in with MS.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I'm not trying to be difficult or anything, but Phil has said that they will move away from generations all together on several occasions. They may fail, or he may have lied, but I don't think it's much of an assumption to takr him on his word.

I take that as backwards compatibility forever. But that's just me. Beyond generations could simply be how he tries to sell the Scorpio. They can't hang onto the Xbox one forever.

That is very true. If they are no longer going to go with traditional generation, where devs have to start fresh all over, they do need to have a naming scheme that works that does not tie them down to the Xbox One. Not sure what could that be however, just calling Xbox would not work because of further iterations of the console.

I always assumed that's what he meant. Not that there wouldn't be another system.

I think you need to go digging for this proof of yours, this isn't how I recall it happening.

Wear those colours in pride and you'll make papa Sony proud >.>

Edit: Wasn't that guy banned on GAF?

He's not a warrior/fan boy if that is what you are thinking.
Only for Dynasty Warriors

Zhuge also was not the one to leak the MS presser, so don't spread misinformation.

Microsoft generally does a really good job of announcing new games to go with major console releases, and they are certainly treating Scorpio as such.

Say what you want about Xbox One, but they announced Quantum Break, Recore, Sunset Overdrive, Ryse: Son of Rome, D4, Scalebound (yea, this one didn't happen, but it was apart of the original plans at least until things fell apart with the game's development), Ori and the Blind Forest, Sea of Thieves is coming, Killer Instinct, Crackdown etc.

Basically, even with Halo, Forza, Gears, that isn't some terrible lineup, especially when Forza Horizon and Forza are still top franchises, Halo is as good as it's ever been imo, and I haven't tried the new gears, but I assume people are pretty positive on it. I think they have some nice variety, we just hit a point where we don't really know what their future plans are outside of specific titles. Fixing simply our lack of knowledge of what's in the pipeline would go a very long way. And there really isn't nearly enough Japanese style games that appeal to my tastes. If Microsoft gives us a better idea of what's coming up, and some of those are some bigger budget, not smaller, releases, while making an effort to improve the japanese release situation, I think combined with Scorpio's expected performance capabilities, especially with so many major 3rd party releases coming up, Microsoft will be in a great position with their game related offerings.

"Microsoft has no exclusives" is a myth that's been perpetuated for years to suit fanboy agendas.

The issue Microsoft has has nothing to do with exclusives. It's to do with growing new franchises.

Here's the problem, back when Microsoft were acquiring games left and right for the launch of Xbox, they obviously bought Halo. Halo was a smash out of the gate. Then for the 360, they locked down Gears. Gears was a smash out of the gate. Then they created Forza, which was also successful out of the gate. So this is what Microsoft became accustomed to.

Microsoft entire experience in gaming for that first decade or so was "It's either a smash straight away, or it's not worth it".

It's an attitude that persists to this day despite so many other publishers showing them what an incredibly ill-informed attitude it is. I believe Microsoft's entire philosophy on entertainment is based on the book by Anita Elberse's book Blockbusters: Hit-Making, Risk-Taking, and the Big Business of Entertainment. This book basically outlines Microsoft's strategy in that it's less risky to bank on sure thing blockbusters.

The issue is, all these theories don't take into account just how INCREDIBLY unique the gaming industry and it's consumer base is. It simply doesn't work that black and white. Microsoft to this day still hasn't grasped the concept that franchises normally need a chance to grow and evolve. They don't just...happen. Normally. Halo and Gears were the exception, not the rule. Most franchises are grown like Call of Duty, Uncharted or Assassin's Creed. First/early entires are mildly successful with flawed games that show promise with a future iteration or sequel making good on that potential or hitting that perfect note in distilling the formula that game is going for down to a fine art.

Games that are smash hits out of the gate tend to go the other way. They capture lightning in a bottle with their first try and then struggle to replicate it with sequels. Halo and Gears are perfect examples of this. Bungie and Epic both struggled to create sequels that went anywhere near their original games. 343 and Coalition are also struggling to replicate what made those original games so great.

I've gone on an unintended rant, but ultimately the point is, Xbox has plenty of genuinely good exclusives. Microsoft just has no fucking clue how to foster them and turn them into franchises because they expect them to sell Halo numbers out of the gate. Which simply rarely happens anymore.

It was ZhugeEX

Here's the tweet where says he won't leak the Sony conference.

https://mobile.twitter.com/ZhugeEX/status/742448744398999552

But Did he leak the Microsoft one, obviously there are some who know about these show early. If he did leak the microsoft show and not sony, even after in the know ,than it is kind of sad. but i don't think he did.

I remember that some guy working behind the scenes or so got the schedul for ms and sony.

If you have something to backup that will be nice, because right now its read like fluff piece to be honest.

There is a lot of room for interpretation with such statements. Scorpio could be a PS4 Pro like device (just a mid generation upgrade for the dedicated) with a promise of permanent backwards compatibility going forward and his words would still hold true.

Im not going to search months old topics etc. I have better stuff to do.

Im not 100% sure. I probably read that from zhuge too.

But regardless lets get back to topic. I wish MS would announce a Scorpio Event now. I want some details.

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

The other possibility is that plans just change.

Just for the record:

"I posted this during the Ubisoft conference."

https://twitter.com/ZhugeEX/status/742511558782291968

The tweet that people are referencing from Zhuge had nothing to do with Microsoft's conference. If you can find specific proof that it was Zhuge that leaked the Microsoft conference then that's one thing, but at this point, that remains to be seen and we certainly don't need to drag anyone's name through the mud. We're better than this guys.

Let's focus on the Scorpio speculation.

And on that note, I don't think it would be wise to bundle old 1st party games with the system at launch (a) because of how that may affect costs (either for the hardware itself or revenue for MS) and (b) because I expect the vast majority of early adopters to be the existing Xbox base who likely already have Halo 5, Forza, Gears, etc. This system is not going to appeal to brand new users as well as the Xbox One S will at $199.

Personally I can see them bundling Game Pass with the console for a few months, along with a new game. The value proposition is critical.

Yeah, i think he leaked Ubisoft presser, not MS. Still, saying that you know about Sony conference too but not leak it, while it didn't stopped him from leaking Ubisoft's presser is still shitty thing to say.

Given Zhuge isn't here to defend himself (he is banned) it would be nice if people stop trying to crap on his reputation. He provides good information.

Jesus Christ, the bullshit wagon continues. Can you stop this, you fucking loons, or PM Zhuge and let him know you're thinking about him

Yep, you're right about that and I'm sure Phil realizes this as well. But it sounds like that project is still a long ways off.

Beyond generations does not mean Xbox one forever being supported and it's also not just BC forever.

Yeah, BC forever is a thing, but also games targeting future hardware, just like on pc we might get games that even Scorpio won't max out, but when played on the next thing it will run/look better.

As for xbone what it means is no clear cut date for support. Until now when a new console launches you know all the new games won't work on the old console not even cross gen games, and eventually support wind down even for games that could run with no problem on the old console. Now, once support is no longer enforced it becomes a per game case, just like it is on Pc or mobile. Only difference is that for a while Ms will mandate support to an specific platform (not that it would be much needed I doubt most developers would stop supporting xbone)

I think Playgrounds other game is most likely to be multiplatform. They are a new-ish company who have gained a good reputation, now it's time to make some bank!

Multiplat
Xbox Exclusive
Sony Exclusive
Commodore Vic 20 Exclusive
Nintendo Exclusive

In that order!

Personally I can see them bundling Game Pass with the console for a few months, along with a new game. The value proposition is critical.

That is actually a great idea. A free period of Live and Game Pass would mean parents getting a console for their kids at the cheapest rate (no bundle), knowing that it'll be opened on Xmas day with a large selection of games to play straight away. That could keep the cost down at launch.

Yeah 1-3 months of game pass and 1 month Xbox live thrown in with the consoles is a great idea. $250 for a decent console and 100+ games right off the bat, great for low income families looking for best value for kiddies Christmas presents!
