Dude what the fuck how is this possible. I just saw it and I fucking LOVED it. It's super fun and imaginative as fuck and the animation is beautiful. It's up to 42% now but I feel like that's way low. I don't think it's like a 90+ movie or anything but it's totally not under 50 or 60 IMO

I didn't like Baby Boss at all. It was pretty, it had two or three funny jokes (that Elvis piece was hilarious), but it was so empty plot and script-wise. It felt like it was made for to the adult audience as the jokes were mostly adult oriented and it had quite scary scenes for children under 10.

It was exactly like Ice Age 5, pretty thing without any substance.

Do we seriously have to explain how Rotten Tomatoes works again?

Excellent point. Under $20m is a very lowball estimate but given how LIFE cratered I wasn't sure whether GITS would suffer a similar fate given that they were both catering to a similar audience albeit LIFE is rated R.
I think it'll be lucky to hit $30m.

We should have a better idea by tomorrow. $30M would probably require at least $2M in Thursday previews. Maybe more. I don't know if GitS has a hardcore fanbase. If presales are much under $2M, we probably should expect much out of the weekend. Sub $20M seems low though. Even the Robocop reboot opened to $21.6M. Total Recall's reboot made $25.6M on its opening.

Is that good or bad?

Seems like it will be a meh opening

Mid-20s if reading post correct

Also do we have any numbers on Wedn previews or was that just Drafthouse?

That would be my conclusion, yes. Power Rangers did $3.6M during its Thursday previews last week, for a $40m opening. I would guess that PR had a bit higher up front demand than GitS, but we shall see.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

It's an okay result to be honest. I'm still thinking high 20's but we'll see as Deadline gives us more updates leading to the weekend.

From the numbers I've gathered (Russia & New Zealand), overseas it's doing well.

Wait, Boss Baby is from Dreamworks? I thought it was from those guys that make Minions and all that other stuff.

Oooooh I got a bad feeling about Cpt. Underpants now.

JW 2 did 2.8M in previews and hit 30M OW. JW had the benefit of cultivating a solid fanbase over the last few years which led to a solid Thursday number. GitS doesn't seem like a film to get plenty of walk up business and its fanbase wasn't large enough/not interested to do anything special during previews.

Looks like a low to mid 20M OW at best with shitty legs. It better hope it can pull some nice OS numbers.

Illumination would have done it for half the budget, marketed the hell out of it, grab 250M at the DOM BO.

More evidence that actors/actresses have less star power than we think.

It would have performed even worse internationally without the top billing of Scarlett Johansson.

The film is performing similarly to xXx there - l don't think it'll have the same run in China, but it'll out-gross the domestic market surely.

I fully expect the OS run to outgross the DOM run. China did account for more than 50% of xXx OS total.

You know, I gotta give it to DreamWorks. They don't always hit their mark, but of the big studios, they seem to be THE most experimental with their style/animation/etc. Blue Sky has done some amazing and cute work with stuff like Horton/Peanuts/Angry Birds integrating 2D animation into 3D but Boss Baby, visually, is unlike anything else out there now. Captain Underpants, likewise, does a very very faithful job of recreating the look and style and feeling of the CU art from the books. I kind of hope they've finally figured out that their humans looked repulsive and they weren't really getting anywhere being just another animation studio pumping out samey-looking flicks, and decided to just say fuck it and let their cartoons be cartoons? They just gotta get their writing up to snuff too, but not even Disney or Pixar hit home runs every time. Not every DWA movie can be Kung Fu Panda or Dragons :p

I mean, outside of KFP and HTTYD I'm usually the first one to dismiss DreamWorks (even though I'll eventually watch it anyway cause who knows, right?) but I have high hopes for them regaining some footing if TBB and CU do well. REALLY excited for Me and my Shadow now that I've seen what they did in TBB -- if it EVER comes out >___<

How the hell could this happen? The trailers looked amazing.

and dubstep killed them all dead. Seriously, whomever came up with that needs to be axed swiftly and without mercy. But then I feel that way about a lot of marketing fuck-ups, yet nothing ever comes of it. And it is a fuckup because nothing validated doing something that shitty. The cringe was 'gtfo' level.

Also, maybe people don't really care about niche remakes? Just a thought based on say, video game movies. Just because there is a group that wants it, doesn't mean general audiences do. This will probably kill any attempt at Akira though (thank Tetsuo), with Battle Angel Alita in post but similar odds at non-success.

Then again, I though Kaiju movies were going to suffer as well, but Kong is doing good. Power Rangers... ehm, it came out, I guess.

I have never seen Akira, but everytime I watch the trailer I am blown away by the animation, there is no way that this translates well. I am still interested, how the Bodyhorror plays out in the end, but I think there really ever one person who perfected the genre, so I am sure it will be ugly and have shitty CGI.

Power Rangers is doing on par about how I expected. It's going for it's core market and a bit of overflow. And Power Rangers is obviously more relevant right now than GiTS

Yeah, too bad. I got to see it way early and I really enjoyed it. Also want to go see Captain Underpants after I saw what they could do.

New Line is claiming 197M views for the IT teaser in the first 24 hours. The previous record was 139M for Fate of the Furious

If only a year I got to ask people what they think what make more at the bo a year ago. A ScarJo led Ghost in The Shell or modern Power Rangers movie led by mostly unkowns. Keeping in mind GiTS niche and Power Rangers isn't as popular as it use to be.
