Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap Launches April 18 for PS4, Xbox One and Switch

I think it's better if they have a bit of space between them ... holiday 2017 would be fine ... they can take advantage of great publcity from WBIII

Maybe, but that's so far away. I'm thinking September.

It's so surreal this is relevant in 2017. What a time to be alive.

I know, right?

Edit:

Thanks for the US perspective ... US reviewers were so beholden to publishers that they never reviewed a game badly ... infact ... they didn't even give scores for a while. UK reviewers were a lot more harsher at the time (the market was still flooded with 8-bit computer software). So it's maybe more impressive the reviews that it got in the UK at the time ...

Thank you so much for posting those - reading them with some hot coffee.

Wonder Girl is cool, but I was hoping the news was gonna be a physical release of the game. :(

Oh well will continue hoping for it one day, I know they want to do it. Hyped beyond words for the game regardless. :D

I managed to get some additional magazine coverage and box shots of the TurboGrafx-16 port, Dragon's Curse.

Those of you that used to own a Sega Master System may experience an unshakable feeling of deja vu when playing Dragon's Curse (known as Adventure Island in Japan) - because it's pretty much the exact same game as the Master System Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap!

Dragon's Curse plays very much Zelda 2 on the NES - it's a side-scrolling platform affair with slight RPG elements. The 'hook' of the game is the ability to change into several different forms - ranging from a fire-breathing dragon to a tiny mouse (ideal for getting into small openings). The game world is fairly open-ended, and there are no 'levels' as such. Each enemy defeated yields cash, which can be exchanged for various useful items to aid your quest.

That's pretty much it. There's not a great deal to Dragon's Curse but the execution is near-faultless. The level design is genius and makes excellent use of the shape-shifting concept, laying down a template that would later be emulated to a degree by Nintendo's Super Metroid and Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

The graphics are bold and colourful and this version has one massive advantage over the Master System original - there's no sprite flicker!

I got the first one on my game gear and enjoy it. I can't wait to play this on my switch.
How the difficulties from the original?

Oh wow really ?! D:

I kinda don't like being forced to play the animals :/ ...

Only the dragon plays completely differently (breathes fire, no shield). Everyone else has a sword and shield but variations on the movements. They're really fun to play as.

So are you like locked into one form per stage ?

Or can you transform at any point ?

If so, is it viable to stay human ?

This is a nice game. Its a perfect game for Switch. Just sit relax and play. I loved the series on sega. So I hope it has the same quality.

You go to a room to transform, they appear throughout particular areas aside from the Hub World.

You cannot stay as a human, you are cursed which is the point of the game.

I just don't get why they made a big deal out of playing as "wonder girl" if it's literally for 3 minutes :O .

Can you replay the game as human once you beat it or something :O ?

You can use a password save to play as Hu-man but once you go to a transformation room and change form, you can't change back to human iirc.

It doesn't really matter not being able to play as a human, it can't do much for exploring stages.

The only time Hu-man is relevant is the beginning of the game and playing the prequel game: Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Edit: It's possible they could be allowing to play human form anytime, this is a remake and it introduced a new character so it doesn't sound like things are restricted.

Let's just wait for a confirmation to see if you can play human form anytime aside from the password save.

Awesome, I'll pick this up on Switch for sure. Can't believe we're getting this game AND Monster Boy and The Cursed Kindom in the same year!

The game doesn't really have stages, think of it like Metroid where different forms have different powers that allow you to reach places you couldn't with others. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone coming fresh to this (yes I know it's decades old but it's a lovely game that people should enjoy at their own pace) so don't worry so much about the different forms. Human form isn't even close to my favourite.

If you really really want you can enter passwords that'll max you out with human form but it breaks the game. Just give it a go! Lizard-man is probably the most annoying but it doesn't last too long.

I'm gonna take a guess and assume they've added something in the remake that allows you to play more as Hu-Man.

Maybe after the credits or something you can run around and do stuff as him/her. Or they've added the Hu-Man 'transformation' to the pad thing after you finished it/use the password code.

Like has been mentioned, it just wouldn't make any sense to add the female character for just those few moments from the old game. *shrugs*

We shall see soon!

Maybe they're including a whole remake of Monster Land as well where you can play as Wonder Girl the whole game! :p

Monster Land was one of my favourite games when I was a teen. My friend and I used to play Dragon's Trap on Sega Master System in his basement (more like me watching him play). Back then I didn't care for it...playing as a dragon? Why are the sprites so large on the screen?

Since then though I've learned to appreciate Dragon's Trap. And I've still never completed it, so I'm looking forward to this a lot.

Having said that, I'd still like a continuation of Monster Land. That would be a dream come true. Something like Monster Land:The Lost Levels.

Arcade Wonderboy games were really some of the best games in their genre. Monster Land arcade action remains even today unparalleled.
Wonderboy 1 was for arcades what Mario was for consoles. Monster Lair was very good game too.

But they are way too short for a remaster like this

AmyS, we used your awesome scans to make an awesome trailer!

how does a small team get this up and running on so many platforms?

Been doing games for a long time now, it helps :) we also had an extra person at the end helping with e.g: finishing the XB1 port, I gave them a fairly basic port and they took it to 100% (aka full-filling all the subtle technical requirements required by console manufacturers).

I will buy this. I spent countless hours on master system with that game and nostalgia will overwhelm me. I even dreamt of that game as a kid.

Immensely hyped. Have requested the OT.

And I don't typically request OTs.

Couldn't see anyone else snagged it, let me know if anyone else got it / wants to contribute

Apologies - current up for £12.79 for Playstation PS+ members preorder in EU at least

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en...trap/cid=EP1470-CUSA06649_00-WBPREORDERBUNDLE

I'm out and about at the moment so can't do a full check. I don't initially see a discount for Xbox or Switch owners but i will look later or if anyone else knows please post!

£15.99 on PSN up until release day, and that becomes £12.79 if you have PS Plus.

Bah. Really want it on Switch, but thanks for the info.

Switch price (in Aus at least) is cheaper than PSN without the PS+ discount, so it's a nice mid ground for me price range.

Can't wait to play it, i've been counting down the days :D

Why is the Switch one £17.99 when the PS4 and XB1 ones are £15.99. (or less with dat discount)

Ah well, I want it on that portable screen, I guess I'll pay the £2 Switch tax.

It's a PSN promotional discount that goes away after launch.

That's weird. Here in Aus it's the opposite (but we have a habit of getting screwed over with price conversions on PSN whereas the eShop is usually a bit cheaper)

The devs did a really nice preview with Giant Bomb a couple of weeks ago which put this on my radar.

https://www.giantbomb.com/videos/we-play-wonder-boy-the-dragons-trap-with-lizardcub/2300-11890/

I'm the right age for this nostalgia-fest and it really does seem like a labour of love for them.

You're not kidding.

Everyone owes it to themselves to check these short Dev Diaries out if not already
