KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

What settings do you have on the ps4 video output settings concerning resolution and RGB?

I got the KS9000 65' and been spending all my time just playing with the picture settings :)

I like Auto on PS4 (gave me RGB output) and Native for color space.

I set the resolution to 2160p RGB as I'm paranoid Auto won't work. This automatically changes to YUV422 for HDR content. I also have the RGB range set to full (with the Samsung KS HDMI black level set to normal).

Installed my bias light the other night (recommend luminoodle as suggested in here, brighter, thinner, can easily make corners without cutting and using adaptors) and am really pleased with it.

Only problem is it randomly comes on during the night, goes off, then comes back on for around 5 minutes before going off again. Only noticed it whilst going to sleep so who knows if it does it throughout the night.

In my small bedroom with the TV at the end of the bed I thought I was being abducted by aliens or it was the second coming of Christ the first time it did it.

This happen to anyone else? Any suggestions? Thinking it may the PS4 in rest mode waking the TV (even though it stays off when the lights comes on) so will try shutting it fully down tonight.

That or the TV connecting to internet to do background stuff. Firmware checks...

Haha that's pretty funny. Not had the problem myself, but then my tv is in the living room and is usually on when I'm in there. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the PS4 in rest mode though, just try turning it off to rule it out if it happens again.

Massively recommend this bias lighting to anyone.

There's a lot of talk about a dim picture on here with hdr, bias lighting will make the picture appear brighter and will also make it easier to look at with low light. Also, try to keep the backlight lower on other settings so you notice the difference in dimness less, I have it on 5 for tv/Blu-ray and 10 for games.

Thank for the update, man. I will do that.

I played Horizon for 30 minutes tonight, including some heavy graphical sections. Not one flicker. Made a video to illustrate that! Yay, right?

https://twitter.com/glennriccobono/status/849769279348244480

BUT while viewing the video in Share Factory, I got the black screen.
Switched to 1.4. While I didn't get the black screen, viewing the exact same video in Share Factory resulted in massive lag. The video was painful to watch. I switched it back.

To be continued

Thursday morning and it won't power on. Time to exchange it.

Couple questions about this tv, i have the 55":

Does HDR mode automatically activate when a ps4 game supports it? I have the hdmi port option enabled in the tvs settings.

If so, will HDR still automatically activate in dynamic viewing mode? I know that mode looks oversaturated and shitty to some ppl but im blind as a bat and need my colors to pop.

With HDR enabled you can still change some settings like game/movie/dynamic/whatever like normal so if there's something you don't like you can change it but backlight should remain 20. In games I would enable Game mode which will disable some of those things.

You just have to confirm that HDR is enabled. on my tv it's automatically changing the backlight and making a popup on HDMI sources but some people complain that on theirs it doesn't which I guess depends on firmware. In both cases you can see it changing to YUV422 OR YUV420 from RGB which you can see in TV info or in the display info in the PS4 settings while in an HDR game which had HDR enabled if it isn't automatic.

One problem some people have is it not changing backlight down to a normal level when you exit HDR mode and that could obviously make things much too bright and washed out.

edit: on SDR content (not HDR) there's also the issue of HDMI black level set to Limited or Full which should match up between devices or be automatic otherwise the picture won't look right. there's a lot of speculation around that like some people are saying that Limited mode is better for some games but I don't know if there is any truth to that or it's just hearsay repeated

edit2: brain fart (wrote brightness in a few places instead of backlight) also Smart LED set to high is typically considered good for HDR mode.

Hey SS I tweeted at Playstation and Samsung this AM. Sony said to try changing the HDCP mode to 1.4, while Samsung said they are working on a firmware update.
Hey guys, try setting the PS4 resolution to YUV instead of auto. That's worked for me as a bandaid, can't tell you how sub-optimal it is but I certainly don't notice.

Is anyone using this set with a Wii U? I started Zelda BoTW last night and was wondering if I should try playing with sharpness or anything to account for the lower resolution. I'm just using my PS4 Pro settings at the moment.

Yes n' Yes.

At least, theoretically.
So do I need to switch out of game mode for watching blurays on the ps4? Is there any difference in image quality?
You can leave it on game mode. Movie mode has a variety of very subtle image-enhancing effects and you can tweak it to look significantly different from game mode, but if they look more or less the same to you, it's no big deal and you can just do whatever.

Does anyone know why the speakers make a constant popping sound when I have my El Gato plugged in? It seems directly connecting a PS4 or Xbox One is fine, and even usually the El Gato is fine, but twice it's done this constant popping. I know it could be the capture card but it's never done it before so it seems like a weird coincidence. I want to make sure I shouldn't plan to exchange this for another.

I paid $1,100 for my 55" curved and it's one of my favorite purchases ever so far. The picture on these sets is amazing and really only rivaled by the more expensive OLED sets. As a gaming TV though, this had fewer drawbacks in my opinion. Really glad I got one!

I have the same luminoodle and I've seen it stay on after shutting it (the TV) off. Usually it does go off on its' own eventually but sometimes it seems delayed.

I also purchased this USB on/off switch just because I didn't always need/want the light to be on.

Mine just stays on for about 5-10 seconds after switching the TV off then goes.

really close to pulling the trigger on this TV. Is it still THE best bang for the buck for 4k HDR gaming?

You won't regret it, do it! Only better option is an LG OLED if you can afford it. Even then, from what I've seen in store, it's not worth forking out that much extra.

Is anyone disconnecting their ks8000 from the net and just using a tv box after issues with the OS have come to light over the last few days?

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/201...led-with-security-flaws-amateurishly-written/

That's worrying, but as far as I know, there's no external box that delivers 4K/HDR Netflix so well. That's really all I use Tizen for: everything else maxes out at 1080p aside from the odd YouTube video, so I steam local media, Shudder, and YouTube through my Apple TV. This is one more reason to upgrade if Apple release a 4K/HDR model that gives me Netflix at the same quality as the TV's native app though.

That's a damn shame and very concerning. If you add in the fact that the Tizen apps are buggy as hell on top of the security problems then I'd really like an alternate solution. I'd love to use my PS4 Pro or Xbox One S and simply ignore the TV's smart interface, but of course neither has the 4K HDR support in their streaming apps like the TV's apps do. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think either supports HDR on YouTube, for example. I might look into a Roku Premier+ box as it is supposed to support it and usually has up-to-date apps.

Bought it.

Just turned it on and there is a solid line of dead pixels running the entire length of the TV on the vertical. Omfg.

Returned the TV to Best Buy. Replacement will be delivered and setup on Monday. They offered me free setup instead of just free delivery so I said why not I'll wait till Monday and save myself the hassle. Will report back on Monday if all goes well.

Think I basically have the wife's blessing to proceed. Waiting on final confirmation.... gah!!

So you bought the open box one? That might explain why it was fucked up.

It's normal for bright whites on a pure black background to "glow" right?

You mean like blooming? That's probably the fault of the TV being edge lit, and when using local dimming/Smart LED. Nothing I believe you can do to get around it, other than changing TVs to a full array one or getting an OLED. I like the Smart LED option though for better blacks and whites.

Yeah I believe it's blooming. Doesn't really bother me other than worrying me that something may be wrong. I only see it on something like a game startup where the screen is pitch black and there's some white text or something contrasted against it.

I picked up this TV last weekend, and I'm loving it but the weak local dimming is a bit of a bummer just because you can see a clear difference when there's an entire column where it isn't applied. Granted, I knew that would be the case going into it and it's still light years better than my Sony 802a (with flash lighting all over the place) from a few years ago, but it's the one small nag I have against it.

I would strongly suggest bias lighting. Kits are super cheap and it makes a world of difference in perceived black levels/contrast ratio.

I have to say, the KS8000 has the absolute worst software I've ever experienced in a Smart TV. It's so bad that I stopped using it entirely. Luckily for me I primarily use the TV for gaming so it's not a huge deal, but don't get this TV if you plan on using the apps. Even the "Home" bar at the bottom of the screen frequently lags or freezes entirely, requiring a power down and power up to work again. The apps themselves do the same thing, constantly freezing, lagging, unable to log in, or just becoming unusable in a variety of ways.

Edit: I'm hardwired via ethernet to my router with 100mb connectivity.

Normally the MU series of this year are like the KU and JU of previous years, not SUHD. We need a MS 8000 to be as good as the KS 8000. Sadly this won't happen and Samsung replaced this with Q7/8/9 this year.

Yup. And the Q7 has been reviewed by RTings and found to be extremely lacking. Especially for that ridiculous price.

I've said it before, KS8000 is the best non-OLED HDR TV for gaming. Althought it looks like the new 2017 Sony LED (I think X900e?) is also very good.

Still high input lag compared to KS 8000.

This is due to smart LED, it bothers me, especially on destiny item drops at the end of a strike, so I turn Smart LED off

Man, I feel ridiculous. After a week I still feel like my four year old Vizio looks better. Mostly with cable TV though, gaming wise I don't feel like I'm looking at a worse picture necessarily. Though darks might be too dark. With cable TV I feel like it's both too dark and too bright at times. like I'm missing clarity in blacks while whites are too white. And while most scenes look fine, often I feel like people look washed out and pale.

And yet everyone loves the tv, so I must be insane.

Just to confirm, I tried the Youtube app on Xbox 1 S and PS4 Pro last night and neither of them support HDR. Why is that exactly? Is it Google's fault? Do ANY apps aside from the BR player on X1 support HDR? Maybe the apps can't, but I doubt that, at least for the Xbox S.

With cable TV I feel like it's both too dark and too bright at times. like I'm missing clarity in blacks while whites are too white. And while most scenes look fine, often I feel like people look washed out and pale.

I thought the same thing when I first got my set. If you haven't done so, I'm going to suggest that you use Movie mode and start by copying RTINGS settings for everything, including all the 2 and 10-point white-balance and custom colorspace settings. This is a lot of work but I feel like it made a huge difference on my set and mostly solved that issue. Be sure to copy everything just as they have it and don't turn on anything (Dynamic Contrast, etc.) unless they have it on. I know some of those settings are panel-specific but it sure improved my set.

After that I "salted to taste" by making a few adjustments of my own that I feel are an improvement. For example Contrast at 100 is too high (IMO). If you calibrate to the test slides they will will tell you it's A-OK but in actual viewing of content whites are blown-out. Here are my adjustments:

Backlight up to 8
Contrast down to 91
Sharpness up to 10
SmartLED Low
Color Tone Warm 1
Gamma +1

Top Bottom
