Neo Geo games coming to Nintendo Switch

I'm not sure the golf analogy will entice newcombers, but I'm glad people are starting to talk about this. The "reset if you lose your first credit" advise is a massive overreaction to journo criticism of arcade games and comes with problem of its owns. There's nothing fun or useful about replaying the easy stuff over and over to get to the actual challenging part.

Yes. I know the exact critical backlash you are taking about, even had a bit about it in my original post but cut it as it is wordy enough. I agree I don't know if this is the exact metaphor that will help people, though I personally have used basically this sort of idea when progress had felt slow and it does help.

Likewise beating metal slug on say 2 credits is still a hell of an accomplishment. I understand the threshold that a single credit represents but it is kind of funny that a style of play that applauds every major and minor score improvement also has this all or nothing mentality when it comes to survival.

Arcade Archives is just faithfully replicating the DIPS settings available for ASO II. That game allows you to specify a precis number of continues, most later neo geo games don't or just offer a binary continue/no continue switch

NAM-1975 let's you also pick how many continues you want.

Guess I need to familiarize myself more with some of the MVS settings. I typically leave stuff default, so this is real good to know. Thanks

Ok, I'm officially addicted to Neo Geo games on the Switch. Maybe it is because I don't have the time for Zelda, or because there isn't much else coming out week-to-week, but I now own no fewer than nine Neo Geo games on this thing.

Most recent purchase: Samurai Shodown IV.

Seems pretty cool overall, but seriously "Victoly?!" As a copyeditor, I find the laziness/linguistic neglect that would allow such an error to actually make it so prominently into a game borderline offensive. But, I digress.

I've also become very addicted to buying Neo Geo games on Switch.

I own four Neo Geo games on Switch so far: Waku Waku 7, King of Fighters 98, Neo Turf Masters, and Metal Slug 3.

My next purchases will be Samurai Showdown IV, Fatal Fury, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

So i bought KoF 98, have been playing this game for years and my god the strugle to play with the joycons is real. Its the first fighting game i tried in the Switch but its worst than i expected. Shocktroopers, Neo Turf and Slug are fine but with KoF.....

What a fuck im i lying about?????
I play this game for years on my AES and play most fighting games on an arcade stick or worst case scenario on a ps2/4 d pad.
I STRUGLE TO PLAY WITH THE JOYCONS.
EVEN SMALL THINGS LIKE RUNNING AND SMALL JUMPING.
ME!

I find playing with the stick is much better than the "d pad" on the Switch, unless I use my Pro controller then it's fine.

sorry don't get it i can do all the moves 100% of the time.
Obviously everyone is not you.

I didn't even bother with the joycons and sold them immediately to buy a Pro Controller, which is an OK controller for Waku Waku 7. Does the job, even if it is no Saturn controller.

I play with the stick. I end up of jumping by accident a lot when i want to simply run or just jumping when i want to foward low jump.
I'll probally get the hang of it.
Otherwise game runs fine

yeah that's true my bad.
The pro joystick had a serious issue when the game came out tho.
In the character select screen the stick has no deadzone.
making selecting the lineup glitchy

I don't even have a problem with the stick, but those buttons and in general the ergonomics of the joycons are subpar. Playing with a single joycon make my hands hurt and not even the 3DS did that.

You...sold the joycons for your Switch?

So far the controls haven't bothered me, but I could definitely understand getting to the point where my skill outgrows what is possible with the joycons. I became a fighting stick believer well after the heyday of fighting games, and the only reason I'll go back now is for portables.

I did not try any KoF yet, maybe I will get KOF 97/99 or 2K, which are my favorite ones.

But those ports lack an important option : the ability to map several buttons on a single one. This would help a lot.

Yes.

C'mon, man. The joy-con "d-pad" is pretty much objectively inferior to the types of control options that we've been used to for fighting games since forever. A traditional d-pad feels worlds better for KOF-type execution.

So... Any word on that HORI stick?

You sure about this? I dug through all the settings in MVS and AES has nothing, as well as looked through and tried the DEBUG DIPS available via unibios and I do not see configurable continues anywhere for ASO II. I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something somewhere though.

Haven't bought any NeoGeo games since the first batch with Metal Slug 3. Is the sound delay still there on new releases?

Delay is still there.

Does anyone know what the green text in the game settings mean? Like in Samurai Shodown 4, the text for Level 2 difficulty is green, and there is green text on the Off/60 choice for the 1 Coin Challenge, but the other options aren't green.

Default, if I recollect correctly.

Another thing is that it doesn't account for the difference in difficulty between games. IMO beating Undeadline/Final Fight/[substitute any insanely difficult game of your choice] in say, three continues, is a bigger achievemen than beating Gradius III SNES in one credit.

In MAME, accessing service mode is done by pressing F2 by default. I don't know about other emulators. You select the setting that says "SETTING UP THE SOFT DIP" and it will show this screen

I dinked with the degfault continue settings to show it works like ACA

I hate to ask this, but is there a definitive list of "must-haves" now?

Over 10 years ago I got really into the neo-geo library with Kawaks, along with good but also obscure fighters, like Waku Waku 7.

I also don't think I can take another round of Metal Slug 3 (seriously those zombies are the worst).

Or is it just preferential at this point?

KOF'98 is the only one you absolutely cannot go wrong with, it's not only the best in the series but one of the best fighting games of all time.

The rest vary by mileage, but they're all good to great.

I just bought Samurai Shodown 4, and I have to say the presentation is incredible. I really like the artstyle and sound design.

Truth. Similarly many NES games were either arcade ports or arcade inspired, often with the change of 3 continues or a stack of lives, rather than just giving you infinite continues. I think in general encouraging people to play these games with some limitation is the right approach. While also emphasizing you can 1CC the good / well designed games. It is a tough topic to talk around because shitty coin eaters are also definitely a thing.

Ahhh! It is in the slot sub-menu. Had only found the coin to credit converter of the other main menu. Didn't realize the slot itself had config items. Good to know!

[par system post]

I'm all for emphasizing that people play arcade games without credit feeding, even if it means not strictly sticking to a single credit. I think that "1CC" is the easiest way to communicate that goal and anecdotally (and in theory imo) it's the fastest way to improve, but the pace isn't palatable for everyone.

Another big thing for me is that I really really really like reaching and playing and learning new stages with that weight and tension that comes with a continue limit rather than a minimize-your-credits approach. I'm less score-driven than most and the main motivator for me is basically how the aesthetics and mechanics come together as I reach new areas and have to learn them under that pressure.

Man, I really need to start building my Neo Geo library. Sucks that the wife and I are trying to pay down some bills at the moment. The Neo Geo love on Switch is really impressive!

Do you mean on the Switch or the Neo Geo library as a whole? If it's the former, none of the Neo Geo games released *so far* (Sengoku was announced in the direct and it sucks dirty horse gonnads) are clunkers. Of the current batch I'd recommend KOf 94 the less because it's missing many of the features of the sequels (no custom teams, no variable jump height) and the sometimes odd and unforgiving motion inputs can be a bit of a pain, but it's still a very good game. (Personally I'd rather play it on NGCD because of the awesome arranged soundtrack -but I know this isn't an option for most people lol)

Word. I am the same way. My theory after talking to people about this stuff over the years is for some people the road to 1CC is all too nebulous to derive any tangible satisfaction. Giving something specific to shoot for between INFINITY and (might as well be) IMPOSSIBLE is something that can be latched onto in a meaningful way.

Unfortunately that means finding a good middle ground on a per game basis, but if people are into it I have no complaints about fucking around with Neo Geo games.

Garou is an all-time favourite, (animations have) been compared to SF3. I'm a bit salty myself that it never came to Wii.

Arcade games are inherently designed to eat quarters. Trying to 1CC them is a pretty ridiculous endeavor unless you dedicate a lot of time or are just that damn good. Fighting games are more manageable until you reach the inevitable SNK boss.

I have never played Shock Troopers before now.

Holy shit this game is incredible.

Finally just bought my first Neo Geo game and this is the one I went with and I'm glad I did. Wanted to go with one I've never played before and I think I made the right choice. Only played it for a little bit, but damn is it just a great arcade game. I've always been a big fan of games like Mercs and Heavy Barrel and this will definitely scratch the itch I get to play a game like that.

Kind of want to buy a bunch of Neo Geo games now and might go with Neo Turf Masters next. That a good choice anyone? Also, is there any chance for a Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move release? Wondering if that is something that could happen or if there's some licensing issues that make it something to not even think about. I put in hundreds of hours into Bust-a-Move 2 on the Saturn so I'm hoping they would release that one if it's the same as Puzzle Bobble 2 on Neo Geo. Playing the original in arcades is what got me into those games, so I'd be fine with that one too.

If you like regular golf and/or regular golf videogames, it's an outstanding choice.

Yeah, I'm into golf games. Watching some of the Masters last weekend got me in the mood to play some video game golf. I think I'll buy that as well tonight. Being an arcade game, is it good in single player? The CPU isn't perfect or anything is it? I've got a friend that I see once in a while that loves golf games so I'm sure I'll get my moneys worth when they are over anyway and I can play some multiplayer.

The arcade nature of Neo Turf Masters means its a little different to a sim golf game though. Great game if you can get over that difference though.

Neo Turf Masters is a must-buy. You don't even need to be a fan of the sport or a big fan of golf video games. It's just pure fun.
I figure being an arcade game it's going to be different than a sim game. Hell, it being that way is actually a plus to me, being able to just get in and play a few rounds. Just wondering if you mess up once you're screwed because the CPU is too good. Just don't want to be frustrated because you had a bad shot and there's no chance of coming back. Don't really need in depth single player/tournament modes or anything.

Edit: Either way I think I'm going to get it. Looks like people have nothing but good things to say about the game and that's enough for me to give it a go.

In a way you're not really playing against the CPU. You're kind of playing against yourself. It's more like survival golf. You'll see.

Ok, yeah, didn't need to ask any questions about Neo Turf Masters. Just played a few rounds seeing how far I could get on one credit and it's a pretty damn great arcade golf game so far. I really need to work on that putting since I didn't get too many holes in on one credit. Music is great and that driving sprite animation is so smooth. Didn't realize this game had online leaderboards so that is something that will keep me playing and something to shoot for. Only played on the USA course with the Young Hero and I'm already glad I bought the game. Can't wait to play it with some friends.

Not sure if this is exactly what you are talking about, but playing a little more, I'm loving trying see how many holes I can get to on one credit. Right now putting on the sloped greens and taking into account the obstacles like trees is the biggest thing kicking my ass. Really need to pay better attention to what's in front of me and land shots with better line of sight to the hole. Haven't really been utilizing my slices and hooks much either. Need to work on that. Not really even worrying about how the CPU is doing. Really happy with what I've played so far.
