"I Need a New PC!" 2017 The Ryzing of Kaby Lake and NVMwhee!

I misread your cpu, thought it was 4670k instead of 4690k. Still, they're comparable, even though you should get better results, being a slightly newer platform (and a slightly faster gpu, should you buy a 1080ti).

Anyways, it's a great upgrade, even with a new 1440p monitor.

If you're going all-out, consider buying a newer cpu (you can also do it later down the line).

Thanks for the advice. I figure if I go 1080/1080ti now and stick with the 4690k for a few years, this will hold until I'm ready for an entirely new build. A newer CPU will no doubt net a few more frames, but my 750ti is panting for air on some of the newer stuff.

I was shocked by how much a newer CPU did for even my 980TI. Went from a 3700k (4.5 Ghz) to a 7700k (4.8 Ghz). Battlefield 1 used to be pretty stuttery albeit at 60 FPS. Was never sure what the issue was. But now that stuttering is gone entirely. It feels so much better to play.

For that budget yes a 1060 would be good. Try to look up prices for 1070s too they might not be too far. The lowest 1070 you can find is still much better than the highest 1060.

I'll give the 1070 a check, noticed some places are offering a free game which I could sell to counter the price increase.

Nvidia has changed how games work with those specials. To activate you have to have the gpu that was bought with it or one that is part of the special. You can only activate the game through the geforce experience app.

Loctite? Why?? If anything goes wrong under the IHS you'll kill the chip if you wanted to get under it again. I don't see why anyone needs to glue the IHS back unless they are selling or doing an RMA.
If you hold the IHS with your finger whilst closing the CPU socket latch it will not move during install. The liquid metal also has some surface tension which prevents the lid just falling off on its own.

I actually didn't place the glue between the ihs and the chip. I placed the ihs on top of the chip without anything and just glued around each corner so that it wouldn't move when I put it back. It should be easy to remove again with the delidding tool.

Quick question for those that overclock. Last time I did it was on a 3770k and I only did the CPU. Now I have RAM with XMP that overclocks to 3200Mhz. The stock settings keep it at 2100Mhz (which I will keep for stability during my overclock process). My question is, after I overclock the CPU, will XMP still work? Can I just turn it on or do I have to overclock the RAM manually as well to match?

The premium boards tend to have wifi built in, or ITX boards. You have the option of a PCIE Wifi card too.

Also are you building purely for gaming purposes, or do you expect to use it in other fashions? Streaming counts for that too.

From the benchmarks I've seen (example) the Ryzen 5 1600X is quite competitive with the i5-7600K for gaming. For applications that make proper use of multi-threading the 1600X's 12 threads will of course beat the 4 threads of the 7600K.

I am going micro atx/small form factor though hence the card being a mini version. I hate big ass towers
don't care about streaming and if I do stream I will actually offload to my surface to handle everything

Ah crap I totally forgot about that. Better go with a 1060 then lol.

After overclocking the cpu you'll still be able to either set the RAM speed and timings manually or just use XMP.

So I'm sick of my desktop. So many issues, all of the time. It's really outdated. I don't want to have to deal with making one either.

So I saw this on Newegg:

CyberpowerPC Desktop Computer Gamer Panzer VR 2250 Ryzen 5 1500X (3.50 GHz) 8 GB DDR4 1 TB HDD 120 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

From my knowledge of this stuff it seems like a Beefy PC. Maybe not the most top of the line but it will be good for me for a long time.

It's $1250 and I plan on (if I can) doing an installment plan on it.

Anyone able to eyeball if it's good or not? It also comes with a new gaming mouse and keyboard which I forsure need.

Enough for what?

Like, I can get a 1070 laptop (with 7700hq) for £1200 instead of a 1080 desktop + cheap laptop for roughly the same amount.

I would like the laptop to last me 2-3 years, High settings at 1080p...

~~

I got refunded for that Razer Blade that fell through

If I don't have a variable refresh rate screen, and I'm playing a game that is almost-but-never-quite reaching 60 fps on graphics settings I like, does it ever make sense to try setting my refresh rate to 50hz?

To eliminate tearing? Sure, but it's a very annoying thing to change for just one game.

Only 8 GB of memory is lower for a $1200+ PC but that's a pretty easy DIY upgrade if you don't care about paying for additional RAM on top of it

What's this I read, you don't really need an aftermarket cooler for Ryzen CPUs if you're only planning on doing a modest overclock? Because that would be rather convenient.

Why not build a proper ITX build with on board wifi and a full length GPU? Mini GPUs are hardly ever required.
That case still looks quite large. Do you still want a tower case or could go for a cube type?

I do have 2 sticks of 4 GB of DDR3 if I could still use that.

I must also ask how well does this fair against it?

CyberpowerPC Desktop Computer Gamer Master 2009 Ryzen 5 1400 (3.20 GHz) 8 GB DDR4 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

It's a fair bit cheaper at $800 but still seems decent.

I'm afraid you can't use DDR3 memory in a DDR4 motherboard. RAM prices have gone up a lot lately which is probably why they are only putting in 8GB.

Compared to the $1250 box, this one lacks an SSD, has a slower CPU, and a bottom of the range graphics card. You will probably be able to enjoy the latest games for several years on the $1250 PC. The $750 PC is more of a budget box.

That case is ATX sized, if you want a smaller PC then get mATX. No need to get a smaller GPU, a full sized GPU should fit in most smaller cases.

But what about the $750? Is that outdated the moment it releases? You say bottom of the range graphics card but what does that really mean in terms of quality of upcoming games?

I haven't seen you specify what you want to play. You should figure out what your objective is and go look at some reviews for that CPU and GPU.

I"m getting a little nervous before I finish purchasing my girlfriends PC I tried to build for her.

I was thinking about going with the rx 460 as a nice starting point because it seemed like a good card. Well before I purchased I went onto a pc comparison site and the score it got was only marginally better than my current, dated, pc.

So I'm looking at getting her a geforce 1060 instead which increased its score dramatically. For games like Final Fantasy 14, and black desert, would a rx 460 be enough or should I get the 1060.

What kind of power supply's fit into itx cases? I know due to their form factor sometimes the supplies are a bit skinnier or thinner and different compared to standard desktop PSU's

Do you have a solid case recommendation for a beginner? I would love to experiment with a cube build.

Also I will not be doing any liquid cooking or overclocking as, that's just the way I am. I buy the parts to satisfy my needs in the first place.

Yes, smaller GPU allows more space for wire management, I am absolutely the fucking worst when it comes to wire management

Fractal Design Node 304 is a good option.
You just have to be creative with cable management, it takes many attempts to get the right routing and optimum cabling, not difficult, just time consuming.

Some ITX cases need SFX PSUs, but the Node 304 fits 150mm length ATX PSUs.
I fit the RMx650 in mine which is 160mm plus modular. Long PSUs foul the GPU in this case unless you get a mini GPU. It's the main consideration for this case. You can remove a PSU bracket that gives you more room to fit the PSU - that's what I did, 2 screws and off it comes.

I also used a larger air cooler - NH U14S. And of course I overclocked.

Smaller GPU does nothing for cable management - you are kidding yourself here. It's 1 or 2 cables either 5" forward or backwards depending on GPU length, that doesn't make a difference.

At the ceiling of what I want to play is Star Citizen. Doesn't need to be all maxed out, but I need to be able to play it at a decent FPS. I did search up the card, the GTX 1050 and it seems decent for it. Far-Far better than what I currently have, which has the game at unplayable.

Serious question - is Vega supposed to bring down prices of 1080ti and will it perform on par?

Secondly, is Nvidia going to release a new GPU line - 2070/2080 this year?

Neither of those things bothers me. It's just...

Well really, my issue is the screen. There'a £1200 option with the said specs but it's also 17" (Gsync tho)

A 15" once is like £1350, with 120hz and Gsync or one that's IPS. And then I realise that's the price of laptop + gaming PC combo.

Head scratcher for sure.

I don't need resell value in the laptop but for the desktop (if the benefit is upgrading), I should look into it.

Any idea why Windows 10 would be spinning my Linux drive at full speed? I mean, it isn't even assigned a letter or in any way used in Windows.

As soon as Windows boots, it spins the drive up to full speed and just keeps it there, spinning the hell out of it. It has no reason to. It has to be shortening the drive's life, right?

ok, price actually went down lol

but here is my final build....let me know

the ITX case even takes ATX power supplies

Well I'm not simply buying a GTX 1050, buying a new computer in general.

But why is the GTX 1050 bad? It seems like it gets decent FPS for a game that still has optimization issues.

my rule of thumb is never buy a 50 sub series card ever........too budgety, get a 1060 min if you want a 10 series

Hello friends!

I'm building a new PC soon but am transferring my hard drive from my current desktop over. I'll be switching from a PC with an AMD card to a PC with an Nvidia card; do I need to worry about uninstalling any programs or drivers from the hard drive prior to moving it into the new PC?

I'm just not sure if remnants of AMD will cause my Nvidia card to not play nice.

Thank you!

I would grab that and upgrade the RAM eventually since its easy to do

do you know how to build your own? You probably could build an even better PC for that same price of it being built for you

all you need my friend

you would just run clean and shutdown when transferring the drive. I have always done this method and have never had issues

I only loosely know how to but the big thing I was going for is doing a monthly plan, since I can't pay for all the stuff at once I was hoping to simply pay off it over time. With the $850 one I would only need to put down $50 at the start due to the credit, then work to pay off the 800 remaining.

I'm just so sick of computers. I've had this one which has been 'ducttapped' (not literally) together over and over and I can't even really program on my game anymore due to the computer being so slow.

I know that this probably comes across as lazy, but I just want a new box I just boot up and go.

have you tried comparing to other sites maybe? Like Xotic, alienware, hp even? Best Buy sometimes has some good desktop deals to be honest

edit: yes, best buy has some college deals going atm and I think they also offer monthly payments as well if I remember

no, its not a bad deal at all.....its just you probably can get that build with a few more options tacked in for the same price

problem is for you....that ryzen one is sold out lol and the one on best buys website.....is more for a 1TB less drive

you probably get like $50-$100 off or something.

All this talk about Ryzen has me stumped though

now I'm not sure if I want the 7600k or the 1600x

god damn it!

It's a dumb deal. Basically you add a Sony headphones (not a headset) and you get $100 off. However that's with the headphones added, so if you just want the desktop, then you end up paying less without the deal.
