LTTP: Dark Souls II (an annual April journey...)

Heck, if it's Scholar, not only are torches useful, they're essentially required, they toned down the brightness a lot and I love it all the more for that reason, really cool area.

Yup one of my favourite changes for SOTFS was that torches were much more useful.

Generally the most infamous are
Sir Alonne, Fume Knight, and Smelter Demon, also sometimes Darklurker
.

Though I could be wrong, but those are the ones I hear the most.

What's so bad about
Smelter Demon
?
He was one of the easiest bosses in the game for me.
Blue Smelter Demon
can go to hell though, if only for the area that leads up to him.

I imagine that
the residual damage from just standing next to him as well as the wide hitbox of his swings combined with AOE in a small arena made him difficult for some.

Just wanted to say that this LTTP is a great read! Loving your impressions OP, and I love how your fiancee convinces you to go certain routes and cheers you on hehehe! Does she play as well?

You still have a lot of game and surprises left. Some parts of Dark Souls 2 are absolutely great, and the RPG/level up/build elements are some of the best!

I still have to play the damned dlc!!!

Looking forward to the next update!

No. Elemental damage can still be blocked, but partial damage will get through depending on your shield's resistance to that element, which is what he experienced fighting the bell keepers. An unblockable attack goes right through your shield as if you weren't blocking at all.

So is an example of an unblockable atack those lizard creatures at the bottom of Sinner's Rise? The ones in the water?

Currently level 103 with 60 hours and 630 deaths here.

Looks like I'm pretty bad player, lol.

But I'm playing with a contract with Company of Champions, because is much better to play DS2 without the enemies disappearing.

Well, played more 2 hours and finally beat the Archdemon of
Iron Keep
, it's pretty easy. Only died 4 times. When fighting the
Iron King
I remembered the
Dragon God
from Demon's Souls, two big bosses that is pretty easy to kill.

Talking about souls economy, I love to die when I have more than 30.000 souls, lol. So many souls wasted...

Now I need to return to kill the
Smelter Demon and that damn Executioners Chariot
.

That would really break me. Anytime I beat a boss and have anything greater than 20,000 souls I immediately run back to a bonfire and warp to Manjula to upgrade or homeward bone it out of the area. The most I think i've lost is around 7000.

My fiancee does not play. I did give her the controller once and she hit square/X thinking it was the sword and she drank an estus. She got all afraid after that I didn't want to play anymore. lol. But this is the first game that i've ever played that she's loves watching. Everyday I get home from work she comes in and says "Dark Souls?" haha

Plus she's been a great help at watching my health and stamina for me.

I hear the DLC is some of the best content. I was going to save that for another time but I think I may try to get through all 3 once i'm done the base game. You should play along with me when I start it. :)

Easy_D

never left the stone age
So this inspired me to finish my Scholar playthrough and I just noticed that DS2 has the same issue that 3 has. If you use the d-pad or any other menuing, the ambient sound cuts out. From pls.

I created a dark silverback sickle+10 the other day, is it worth it to get another? For dual-wielding?

I also have a good staff for hexes at 10, a dark roaring halberd+5 and a raw santier's spear+5. I'm not used to the lack of stunlocking with the sickle heh.

Fuck the DLC, I can't beat it, NPC summons don't do shit for me, I have a melee build, and no one is playing Vanilla PC to help me clear bosses that fucking w-w-w-w-w-wrecksauce me.

I'm not bitter- they're some of my favorite areas- but goddamn Dark Souls 2 is one of the few games I cannot beat every boss in and it will always sit there laughing at me, saying hey, you can't beat me!

The bosses are doable solo with pure melee. That's how I beat all three expansions.

Which boss is it? I handled them all pure melee, and solo. In fact, except for one boss in particular I beat every boss in the series (including Demons and Bloodorne) solo melee.

According to the wikis attacks from those enemies are blockable, but that's not my experience. It's possible that their attack animations result in the point at which you get hit coming from a weird direction that the game considers to be "behind" or "above" your shield depending on where you're standing, but I feel like I've been standing pretty far away from them and still ate a hit right through my shield.

Even if the wikis are right about this one, there's definitely a category of attacks that ignore shields, and it's more common in DS2 than it was in 1. For example, The Last Giant's various stomp attacks are unblockable for obvious reasons.

Which boss?

DaS III DLC spoilers
It was Sister Friede. I don't know what it was about her that eventually broke me. I beat Ornstien and Smough the hard way solo no problem, and even the Orphan of Kos.
Maybe it was the many phases, but Black Flame Frieda was also super strong and had crazy health I feel. Eventually after losing for too long I summoned Gael, who made it much easier. Aside from saving time on the second phase, with him distracting her in the third I got rid of more than half her HP before he fell.
Of course, I only beat the Demon Prince from the second DLC. Maybe the final boss will be another nightmare.

Nothing in The Ringed City is as bad as
Friede
. Still the only boss in the whole series I haven't solo'd.

Oh gentle child, I remember farming titanite slabs in daksouls, died with about 700k souls and 23 humanity (pretty much equivalent to consumed effigies), I thought I could make a quick run back to it but got taken out by some bullshit in the demon ruins. I think I stopped playing for a month or two. This wasnt even on NG+, so I definitely could have used those souls to level up A LOT.

I've said it before but the
three fuck boys at the near-end
of the Sunken DLC wreck my shit regardless of both patience and exercise.

Blueberry
and
Gigantic Invisible Snow Cat
also infuriate me to no end. Well, there's an end- I just haven't seen it.

(DS2 DLC spoilers)
For the fucbois, I just kept going around the trenches, dropping in and running out. It gave me enougb room to land a melee attack now and then.

700k?! How is that even possible? Exploit?

UPDATE:

Well this is comprised of my last 2 days with the game. Yesterday was full of joy and utter misery.

Started off with exploring Graveyard of Saints. Lots of rats, but nothing of a problem. Came across a TON of wall faces that I could use Pharros' Lockstone in but wasn't going to waste one if put in the wrong place. Decided I would make that choice later and consult GAF if needed. Came to a bonfire outside of a mist door and decided now would be a good time to save. Good thing too. Because I was about to experience one of the most frustrating boss encounters in the series (and maybe even of all time).

FUCK RATS! Seriously. Fuck the actual rats, fuck the statues that get in your way and fuck that little spiked headed guy who is the actual boss which took me hours to figure out. I did everything I could in that fight. Swapped rings, swapped weapons, ran around, stayed in place. No joke that by the time I was done the fight I had already amassed about 10,000 souls from the regular enemy rats alone. Probably 50 or so deaths associated with that boss right there. Ugh.

4L2ta3L.jpg

Did I mention that those rats do bleed damage and petrification at the same time? I was so glad when I got to leave that place. And what do I get? A rats tail.

tenor.gif

So after that hell hole I decided to finally brave the dark dank of No Man's Warf. I put this place off because of those black creatures which for some reason remind me of spiders (and I don't do spiders well). Plus I had one more Pharros Lockstone left which wasn't used in Rat City, and my brief time in No Man's Warf allowed me to discover one on the floor of all places. So I wanted to see what wall or floor it would open up.

So I get to No Man's Warf. Fiancee is scared to shit by spider looking creatures just as I am. Show her the Goonies pirate ship I want to make it to and we start to venture towards the Pharros face on the ground. Put the stone in and.......

UQ7II8z.gif

One of the most beautiful effects in a game. The entire atmosphere of that area has now changed (for the better I think). So the introduction of light has now instilled in me confidence I never knew I had. I walk my ass up the stairs to (what I call) spider ledge. And what's this?! No spider creatures? What?! How is this.......... Holy shit. They're afraid of light. There are 3 of them all trying to squeeze through a hole in a house wall. Well this just made my night. I take my sledgehammer to each one of them in the back. No problems. But now I have to enter the dark house... nothing here right?

WRONG! One busts through the wall. Nearly shit myself. Run back out into the light where it is safe. Gather my composure and kill it. Walk back inside... look into the room where the creature came from. Empty. Phew. Safe. Cross the threshold where the rooms meet..... and this best describes what happens..

0e4e7ce09a0e8a87ba28436d7ef51402.gif

Really Dark Souls!? From the ceiling?! So at this point the controller is falling out of my hands due to sweat. My fiancee is threatening to leave the room and here I am running my character's ass out of the house for the second time because it's safer in the light. Oh No Man's Wharf. I can't be mad at you though. Needless to say. I made it to the pirate ship. It was rather anti climatic though. Beat the boss first try without any real issue.

ONZ2VVv.jpg

And what was on the other side? A contraption which took me to a ship dock I had been previously. :(

At this point I figured it's time to take it to those lizard creatures at the bottom of Sinner's Rise. Upgraded both my Axe to +3 (because I made it through almost most of DS1 with an axe and I loved it) and then this massive club to +3 (because it did tons of damage and scaled well with strength, real slow though). Got to the base and took out the trash, not without a few deaths though. :p

Another mist door at the end of a narrow bridge. The doors off to the side of the mist door both seem to contain gutters that allow drainage of some sort of blood looking liquid, which of course bodes well for me. Turned out I only needed 2 attempts at the Lost Sinner. But that second attempt was cutting it close. Unfortunately it was so close that I hit my screenshot key a little too late.

HMxoVCC.jpg

And that was that.

QUESTIONS.

1. Pharros Lockstone. Are there a limited amount in the game? Also (without spoilers) can you screw yourself in Graveyard of Saints if you place it in the wrong face?

2. The Lost Sinner. Why is his soul different from the others? Both in it's graphic in the inventory and the message you receive after defeating him?

3. Related to question 2, why is that bonfire called "Primal Bonfire"? I know there may not be an explanation to this but I was just curious.

4. Spent about an hour tonight trying to get to the place above where you find the Firesword. It's just above the cave with the fire spitting enemy. Given where I have been in the game, can I get to this area yet? There is an item on top of some scaffolding and I want it. A simple yes or no will do.

I just don't know what it is...

No matter how much I try, I can't keep going with DS3. I beat it a few times but that's nothing in comparison to the amount of times I beat DS1/2 or even BB. I bought the new DLC recently and I just can't muster up and get through it. No matter what I can go back to the older games, and all I want to do is keep playing different builds in DS2. I just love how every new area in DS2 feels so different, and in comparison to DS3 everything just feels the same.

makes sense. platinumed all soulborne titles and couldnt go through the whole of DS3.
not sure if its soulborne fatigue or just a shitty game.

1. Technically they're finite if I recall correctly, but they can be farmed in a late game area. Either way should have more than enough for doors.

2. Without going too spoilery the Sinner is one of four great souls. All you know right now is that the king has something to do with them, and that they are insanely powerful.

3. I honestly can't remember but I believe it's directly related to the great souls.

4. No.

People feel free to correct me as I generally focused on builds and items rather than lore in my runs.

Aside from the finite lockstones you can find on the ground. Lockstones can be farmed by participating in the rat covenant. Most of the lockstone faces in the "Pharros" areas unlock traps intended to be used against people who are summoned into your world for that covenant.

2. The Lost Sinner. Why is his soul different from the others? Both in it's graphic in the inventory and the message you receive after defeating him?

The Lost Sinner is one of the 4 great lords whose souls you need to progress past a certain point in the game. You'll find a primal bonfire after each of them, which just takes you back to Majula.

There's technically a way to get there at this point, but you're not meant to.

Cant believe that OP have a hard time to kill one of the easiest boss in the game (Royal Rat Vanguard). I died only one time with this boss, it is only hit some rat run to end of the place hit again and return, do that to the end. Maybe you have a hard time because the weight of the armor and shield, and this boss ask for missiles too.

Plus, cant believe that OP killed one of the hardest boss of the game (Last Sinner) with only 2 attempts... I died more than 50 times with Lost Sinner, this damn bastard have a seriously problem with hitbox and do massive damage to my mage. Maybe you overpowered her because the shield and armor, but without shield and armor this boss is a nightmare (plus the torch time limit).

Answer of question 1 is yes, but one enemy can drop Pharros lockstone in a specific place. But I think that isnt a good idea to waste Pharros stone in Graveyard of Saints. You already wasted one in No Man Warf...

Ah, and in one of the last place of the game you can easily farm 20.000 souls in the run between two bonfires, repeat that 35 times and is possible the 700.000 souls. Lol, I wasted easily more than 200,000 souls in that place.

Last but not least, can you share a screenshoot of your char sheet? Just curious about your attributes.

I saw you mention torch time limit but you can
light up the entire arena so that when summer jumps away it doesn't break lock on. This boss is actually easiest as a Mage as a result because you can play defensive very safely from afar.

I will also say I'm loving OPs use of gifs in the updates, laughed at each one!

Um, you know you can light the beacons outside the boss room with your torch to keep the boss room lit permanently, right.

EDIT: Beaten

Yeah I had a really hard time figuring out that there was 1 rat that actually was the boss. I thought they took damage as a whole the more you killed. (Again it was my fiancee that pointed out that the one with the spikes was the boss). As for the Last Sinner it was simply about blocking and getting in that one hit (reg attack) after his 3 hit combo. Took patience, but that's something I do not lack As for No Man's Warf and the lockstone, that area would have taken me 3 times the time without that light. :p

Holy shit @ the souls you can acquire. Doesn't that break the game at some point? Speaking about breaking the game, if I go through will playing the DLC, will the final boss be a joke if I play all the DLC prior to fighting them?

Here is the screenshot of my character sheet.

Update coming later today. Didn't get too much time to play this week due to work. Sigh.

Update coming later today. Didn't get too much time to play this week due to work. Sigh.

Yeah, probably. You can do the final boss then do the DLC after it. You can choose to stay in your NG cycle and keep doing stuff. But don't worry, it doesn't really break the game, this game makes you level faster than DS1/3/BB and the DLC is suited for around starting at 120ish (I finished everything around 140ish). Mind you, the talked meta level for PvP was 150 I think, to put you into perspective.

Looking forward to the update, enjoying reading this LTTP :p

If you only played DS2 during close to launch, the Lost Sinner was WAY harder then. It got nerfed badly in an update.

Ds2 scholar was my first beaten souls game ever, were bb and ds3 better? You bet your ass, but that doesnt mean i didnt at least enjoy every minute of ds2, also the pursuer might be my favorite enemy in the entire series

So after taking out the Last Sinner I spent some souls at Manjula and then wanted to show my fiancee around the area since she kinda joined me late on this journey. So asked me to go towards the doorway the led to Forrest of Fallen Giants. I'm so glad she did. I totally forgot about the room that looked like it would spin to open another pathway, and now there's even a woman there who will do it for me for 2000 souls. Done!

So I've now entered Huntsman's Copse. People aren't kidding when they talk about the diverse selection of environments you traverse in this game. Huntsman's Copse is no different. I found the first bonfire, explored the entire forrest, went into a small ruined castle/house that I smashed boards off of windows to better see (a small neat touch that I really appreciated) and eventually lowered this massive steel bridge. On the other side was a locked bonfire. So i'm kinda bummed at this point because I have two choices, walking next to a narrow ledge or going into a dark cave. I choose dark cave because let's be honest... has Vinny Caravella taught us nothing?

dkkpj0btpyfthjfzbcvd.gif

So inside I find some skeleton's and urn's that curse you. And OH SHIT I totally forgot about the skeleton's friend the necromancer. Which didn't pose much of a threat until I couldn't reach the second one. A couple of firebombs and I reach the exit which leads me to that same damn narrow ledge. Ugh.

So I take my time and finally make it to an alcove with a couple of guys in it. No problem. Inside I find the key to the locked bonfire door and run my ass back. I start to feel confident about navigating the narrow ledge since i'm one hitting most of the enemies along the path. Finally i make it to the end, discover a short cut and decide to give the boss a try. Skeleton Lords eh? 3 of them. Urgh I remember how this went with the Sentinels so I take a jumping swing and BOOM! 1 HIT! Holy shit this is a joke of a boss. Classic Dark Souls. Let you think you have the advantage and then you learn your lesson real quick.

So I take the same strategy on the second skeleton, this time it takes 2 hits. Oh whoa is me. 2 HITS?! Whatever will I do. And then they appear.

WHEELERS!!!!!!

YzckQvU.gif

(A reference for you older kids out there :p)

No not those guys. But just as frightening let me tell you! These assholes take so much stamina off you that trying to hit or dodge after one has rolled into you is impossible. So I bang my head against these guys for a while. Starting to get really pissed (which is sometimes rare for me in DS games). I think I just hate being bombarded with lots of enemies, which was also the case in the rat boss fight. Finally my anger gets the best of me and I say fuck this i'm going with big john (the name i've given to my club).

The club makes quick work of all the smaller enemies (1 hitting all of them) and also has a great wide swing which is extremely effective when controlling crowds. But the wheelers are still messing up my shit. Now i'm really pissed off. Trying to figure out if there's a way to hide behind columns and take out 1 or 2 enemies at a time but the wheelers are too fast and too spread out. I take a breathe and decide to forget about the bosses and the normal skeletons and first focus completely on the wheelers. Well... that's all it took.

Not a bad boss, wasn't overly memorable but at least it provided a challenge and got me out of my standard routine. But not a boss that I would instantly think about when the name Dark Souls 2 gets brought up. But that gets remedied rather quickly. There's only 1 more area to explore.

For those interested, I did make it to Harvest Valley, but after seeing all the poison I decided it would be better to come back to that area after fully exploring a landmark that really caught my eye. This..

RNkpEFu.jpg

Now everyone know I praised The Lost Bastille, and this looks like a dark castle, so i'm overjoyed to explore it. So get my ass up the path, make my was across the bridge and... SHIT... npc invasion. All it takes is 2 backstabs as my axe now does about 1082 damage when backstabbing. So fog door I know doesn't lead to a boss, something which is further strengthened by the fact that I just got the title to this new area, Undead Purgatory. WHAT A NAME!!!

Enter the mist, boss bar appears. MOTHER FUUU... Clearly I still have yet to learn my lesson about assuming a fog door is not a boss door. Cut scene shows horse and chariot looking thing and I have a great memory of the trailer of this game and the ensuring shitstorm that followed about the lighting. So I know damn well what this is. Let's come at this logically I say. I see skeletons so I know a necromancer is not far off. I see small coves, so I assume you are safe while the boss rides past you. So slowly I start to make my way around. It takes some getting used to. Skeletons gang up on me and take my stamina down to the point where I can no longer defend myself. I am not properly hidden in the alcove and the chariot hits me. You name it, it kills me.

Finally I get to a gate with a switch. THAT'S IT!. But wait... what's that beyond the gate... an item. I tell my fiancee "there's no fucking way i'm risking it to get that thing. It's obvious they put that there to tempt you. No way!" All she has to say is the magic seven words:

"What if you can't get it later?"

She knows me to well. I can't pass up missing out on something. So I take a deep breath and as soon as the carriage goes past me I run. Grab the item. Soul of a lost who gives a shit. "I TOLD YOU IT WASN'T WORTH IT!!!!!!" I start running back, but all my stamina was used up on the run there. I hear the horse slowly making it was around the chamber and know its just a matter of time before it tramples me. With my stamina now being back I run and jump at the last second back into the alcove adjacent to the switch. FLAWLESS VICTORY! Wait till the coast is clear and pull that switch. Horse slams into the gate and fall ass over tea kettle. I start with a lunging smash. Circle around and keep taking my shots. It's breathes death at me, throws me into the air, but i'm just too good and have too many estus flasks to mess this up. Until I corner myself back into the alcove and get blocked from exiting. The horse just mauls me. I'm fuming mad, and then i'm dead.

Thought this would would have been a 1 shot deal but it took a few more tried to finally claim my glory over Undead Purgatory. What a boss!

NqxxbGV.jpg

Once I realize I could have got that item even after defeating the boss I vow to never let my fiancee back in my head when playing this game again. I take the door out of the room and reach a dead end with a bonfire and a covenant. WTF?!

Why does this game do this shit? So many dead ends after bosses. This is when the level design really stands in start contrast to the genius of Dark Souls 1. So I warp back to Manjula and have a choice...

Havest Valley or The Gutter...
Poison in daylight or Poison in darkness.

I choose darkness.

The Gutter was my most hated area in the game when I first played it. I've warmed to it a bit more, but I still haul ass through the area whenever I play DS2.

One of my favorite things about the Executioners Chariot is how literal the name is. The Executioner himself was just a prop, it's the Chariot that you were actually fighting.

I hate the Executioners chariot. It has such a shitty gimmick to the point that it's more fun to break the boss and use your i-frame to roll through the first phase instead of running from safe point to safe point like you're supposed to do. That actual fight against the horses is okay and they should have been the entire boss fight (buffed up so they can stand on their own of course).

There were a ton of dead ends in the first Dark Souls. Ariamis, Crystal Caves, Lost Izalith, Tomb of Giants, Ashen Lake, Snor Londo, and New Londo all end in dead ends. The thing was it took you a while to reach the end of each path instead of doing them all in one shot like DSII.

So, I happen to be playing Dark Souls 2 for the first time right now-I've only played Demon Souls before this. I have to say, I'm rather PO'ed at the game, and not for the right reasons.

Why in the blue blazes did they put the most basic mechanic vendors/items on the same single path?!

You see, when I first started, I went exploring around Majula. When I went into the entrance for the Flame towers, I missed the pull cord for the sulce gate and assumed I needed a key for the upstares mechanism.

I proceeded to go through the forest, bastille, the friggen other forest, and the gutter, and got all three primal bonfires, all before managing to find and head over to the ocean-flame-tower of pretty vistas.

The game's basic vendors and items for Pyromancy, Sorcery, and Faith all all on the 4th path. There's almost no other game mechanic NPCs on the other paths. Two. And they're advanced Magic/Faith NPCs that require you pretty much specialize in their stat. And they don't sell basic equipment.

By the time I got to the basic vendor NPC's, I had:
1 wand that required like 18 or 20 something INT to use.
1 Priest Chime that required 18 Faith.
1 Dark Pyromancy flame that's basically useless unless you've died 5 times in a row and have a 40% or so health penalty.
+ a, small, random assortment of spells, most of which would need 10-20 levels in their stats to use, and did not cover basic use cases.

I respec'ed my character to give myself 18 faith back when I thought a faith vendor had to be around the corner (big mistake.), so for most of the game, there was exactly one spell I could use: Heal. Fat lot of good that spell did. I had so little to work with I had to just go full Phys build.

You know, Demon souls had all the basic mechanic vendors IN the hub. No having to hope and pray you run into someone that carries basic miracles or spells.
You know, Pyromancy seems to be 'magic for physical classes that can't afford to spend stats in Faith or Int.' That would be great if the game's one usable Pyromancy flame wasn't hidden on that stupid ship! Friggen useless now.

You know, I was originally planning on doing a Str/Faith build in this game, and I had it roughly planned out. Nope, that didn't work out. I got screwed over on that one and ended up with 20 pts between faith and attunment rotting away. I had 'heal' for most of the game and that's it. Whoop-de-do.

Side note: I actually really hate the labyrinthine level and hub structure. I really prefer Demon Soul's set up where the Nexus was a level select: Select your level, and that's it. No hunting around for entrances and trying to figure out where to go next. The game's pretty straightforward.

I appreciate the quality of life improvements in Dark Souls 2, like the Flask, but I'll be darned if things like this aren't driving me mad. If nothing else, DS2 seems to have a really screwed up idea of what it excepts for player progression. Despite my foible, the game, even you do things out a bit more evenly, seems to have a strange idea of how it thinks players should progress. Case in point: The Bastille Key.

I finally found the Hex vendor. Really, they put almost all the main game mechanic NPCs down this one path.

The Giant's first forest has the old woman and the basic smith.

The Brightstone cave path has the advanced priest.

The bastille actually unifies the Giant's forest and Tower paths so it doesn't really count, but it has the advanced mage and advanced smith.

...Then everyone else is on the Flame Tower Path. So many NPCs....Between the Mist Forest Path and the Sewers, there's like 3 NPCs, and now there's like 5+ NPC's on this one path, alone. The heck.

Thinking about it now, it is kinda funny. I never noticed this because I play melee.

I like melee plus a minor in magic. Utility spells make the game a whole lot more interesting. At the least, small bits of magic was pretty broken in Demon Souls if you only cared about single playthroughs.

I generally avoid magic as I feel it makes the game easier. Maybe I could have made use of some utility spells, though.

I noticed this very thing while playing myself. Luckily i'm playing a melee character.

Update this weekend. But first one question:

1) Is there any reason to keep boss souls or should I just consume them all and upgrade?

Boss souls are used to make special weapons and spells. Most of these weapons aren't useful but the spells are great for casters.

Nah, some are pretty good. For example Spider's Silk is pretty useful.
Yorgh's
Spear was my main weapon after getting it. Loved its moveset.

UPDATE:

So I decided to finally brave the darkness of The Gutter and to be honest it's not all that bad. I was OCD about lighting torches which really helped, and took my time through the entire area without much of an issue. Only problem came when I wasn't paying attention to the damn poison statues and got hit with spit. I really enjoyed the methodical exploration that area entails. So I get to the very bottom, kill all the enemies and see 5 vases blocking a hole in the wall, manage to firebomb them because I know they contain awful shit. Success!

This leads to a far drop but also a torch sconce. So I butterfly my torch, equip my cat ring and fall. Not dead so that's a plus. But, fog door and I can't get back up. Oh well. Let's do this.

Meet The Rotten. What a fitting name. A disgusting creature that completely suits it's name. He knocks me around something fierce at first. Even knocks me into fire which up to this point I haven't had much experience with standing in (this is going to change very quickly by the end of this post) and unsurprisingly it IN FACT does kill you. A few deaths in and i've learned when not to rely on my shield. His attacks are telegraphed well in advance and i'm pretty confident in my dodging ability. Two hand my axe, and it only takes a dozen attempts or so before he's another notch on my handle. Not overly difficult but his design more than makes up for it.

wilHQ70.jpg

I wanted to take a break from poison for a bit and wanted to do some small side stuff that I had made notes of. Took the flame ember to the blacksmith at Lost Bastille (any excuse to go back to that area). Used Fragrant Branch of Yore to unpetrify that one person in Lost Bastille prison cell area which led to a bonfire and nothing else. I guess that was sort of a waste. But the second person I unpetrified, led to a whole other area. Shaded Woods! I can't believe there are still more areas to explore. So at this point I am weighing my options, do I proceed with Shaded Woods or finish poison hell. Figured why not tackle poison in the fresh air and daylight and be done with poison in the game altogether.

Back to Harvest Valley I go. This lasted for a couple days and was really just a very methodical traversal of poison caves, tunnel system and exploration, nothing of significance happened. It was then off to a new area, Earthen Peak, which wasn't a reprieve from the poison that had plague earlier areas. It had in fact gotten worse. So I make my way up some stairs to realize that walking mushrooms are back. Awww always felt bad about killing them in the first game. But these ones were black, and lose almost any adorable factor, so they must die. And I make my way to the first mist door of the area. The Covetus Demon awaits.

Aside:
Now before I continue can we just talk about boss experiences in this game. I feel as though everyone has a distinctly different experience with bosses in the Souls series. I remember watching Giantbomb struggle with the Capra Demon and when I fought it I think it took 5 hits without any issue. Similarly after playing the Covetus Demon, I watched Giantbomb fight that same boss and had a drastically different experience. This is both a good and bad thing, as the experience can either be either better or worse than the alternative outcome. This was my issue with Covetus Demon.
/Aside

So the fight begins, take a swipe and a massive chunk of his health comes off. I circle him and take a few more hits, he's already at half health. He rolls and hits me pretty hard but nothing significant. He's slow, easy to circle and his moves are telegraphed well in advanced. It only takes 11 hits to take him out. This was so boring compared to being eaten and having all your gear come off (the situation Vinny from Giantbomb saw him in). For some people this may have been a memorable encounter. For me, very much forgettable. But oh well.

5fC6BcW.jpg

After my victory I begin working my way up the windmill which to me is akin to Sen's Fortress 2.0. Such a great place. Hidden walls, some deadly platforming to be done, variety of enemies and traps. Wasted a Pharros Lockstone and had it spit poison at me, pissed my pants at the first DS2 appearance of a Mimic and walked through so much poison. So after 2 bosses that posed not much of a challenge, Dark Souls decides to punch my in the stomach in the form of fighting a boss in poisoned water.

This is Mytha!!!!
tenor.gif

WHAT MANIAC CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA?!!?!

Are you serious? So i've got my Poison Bite ring equipped which I still feel doesn't do enough. I've put on all my best poison armour and still it only takes about 20 seconds to become poisoned. I don't have enough anti poison items (nor do I feel it's worth wasting) to cure myself of the effect. So I try and brute force it by trying to kill her as quickly as possible. If it's not poison killing me, it's her grabbing me and squeezing me to death, or hitting me with her head (as a bomb or projectile, i'll let you pick) or simply getting greedy and not having enough stamina left to block her next attack. But's it's the poison. Always the poison which is keeping my attention from other important stuff. Watching my health tick down takes my attention away from my stamina, which then takes my attention away from her attacks. when I do decide to drink, it either doesn't happen soon enough and the poison gets me or it happens too soon and I can't break the animation only to see her attack mid estus gulp.

I really thought this would be my Ornstein and Smough. As always, when i am having a rough time with an enemy I will swap to my club (which I have no nicknamed 'Big Fuckoff Club'). Slower animation doesn't help but the amount of damage taken off is helpful and every now and then it will stagger her. I work at it. Death after death after death. I am losing hope, but not giving up. Then I get a run that just seems to work in my favour. Everytime I drink, she seems to jump back giving me time to compose myself. When she does attack, I luck out sometime and not take the damage or take minimal. Everything is just working. I almost have her, finger on the screenshot key, and it all goes wrong, BIG TIME. Note to self, don't ever take your hand off the controller to get a screenshot until you see the bosses health bar depleted.

I finally beat her after hours of attempts.

TDfXkjr.jpg

I feel relieved. She's done. I've beaten the hardest or most unfair boss in the game. I am complete. Run my ass out of the poison water heal up and take an elevator up. Ready to explore and enjoy what Dark Souls 2 has left to offer.

Remember how I said Mytha would be my Ornstein and Smough? I was wrong. I WAS SO, SO, SO WRONG. I make my way to a new area, one in which I will not name as of this time. You know what I speak of. You know the nightmares that are about to take me. I know I do.

I ended the game last night at almost 3am. After 3-4 hours in this new area alone, with about 2.5-3 hours on the boss alone. I craved sleep, I craved rest. I could not go on. But even today he haunts me. I gave up on the area, I popped most of my boss souls to upgrade myself for him alone. And still it did not help. I have decided to go into hiding in the Shaded Woods with no plans for returning to this area in the near future. But it has been burned into my mind. I close my eyes, and all I can see is this....
