PS2 on PS4 - how can Sony save this

We know that PS2 games havent been selling or released nearly as well as they should.

A lot of gamers weren't happy that cross buy didn't happen and pricing many games at 15 dollars didn't sit well with a lot of people too

Recently ps2 games have been on sale for 3.99 to 4.99 fairly often

I believe this past weekend had near 8 or so games on sale while ps2 games have been on sale many times the past year or so

I'm not sure if this is a sign for future releases and Sony knowing they messed up or just them giving up?

With that said what can they don't gain interest and release a lot more titles. I always have a dream situation for this but I'll try to have a near releasic one as well.

Price - new titles news to be ten dollars and possibly lower.

Introduction of all psone games already on ps3 releasing with in a year on Ps4, as well as ps2 being in the same situation. A bigger infamous on store awareness as well as having special weekly giveaways and contests for games.

Rewards progranm - let's be honest, old games can be great but forgotten. Sometimes people need a push to realize they like something they didn't know about. I suggest a rewqrds program that rewards you for completing ps2 titles. For each game you complete you will receive one playstation point. For each game you get all trophies in two points total

With the points you can buy more games, artwork, themes etc

Theme - three points
New game - Five points

We typically see the attach rate of games on consoles bothering that high on average, especially casuals. With an emphasis on play, rewards and community placement. I believe they can not only do well but be enjoyed by many that never expected to try more games.

Giving away games for completion seems like something that could be fun and sell a lot more games. For every two you get for free you had to at least buy 8 games and complete them. With a pricing structure of five to 7 dollars, I think this could have a big impact on overall sales and spark a ton of needed releases

Music extension- for games you own, having a way to play each games music in a special list game visualizer would be really cool as well as being able to dl each album for games you purchased. This would be something I think all games could use as a hardware feature. Or for new games, 1.99 to unlock it if it seems to difficult for some publishers to release thier music, but for bought games I don't see why not. They can then release oats for sale for every game in a menu on the games page.

Other than that, I think it's implementation and bc engines need to shine very well.

My dream scenario would be for a big revamp in releases with hundreds of titles released for 2.99 with a special playing area visualizer with old commercials, art, new interviews and online play for games like socom etc

I'd like to see where a classic game area focuses on collection of titles at cheap pricing other than just trying to sell one game at a high price. People like collecting things, so why not give it a go. Making it enticing with special features and new content to see, art and contests could go a long way for mind share and sales.

Short version - is ps2 on ps4 dead, can it be saved and what can Sony do to build awareness? Rewards for free games? Psone and hundreds of games added at cheap collecting like pricing?

Scrap the trophy support and don't require publishers to put in a bunch of unnecessary work to put emulated PS2 games on the store.

At the end of the day, they need more 3rd parties to jump on this.

So far it's basically been Sony, Rockstar, SNK, and THQ Nordic.

It's not about saving or whatever. Just give us games to buy. Games that people actually want to buy. Stuff like Ico/SOTC, SIlent Hill 2/3, MGS2/3, Okami, etc.

No one cares about trophies.

Drop the trophies if that is what's slowing it down. This is gonna be like PS3 where it only gets good PS2 games right before it's gonna die.

Still pissed about Nocturne coming out on PS3 when PS4 was already out -________- Atlus

They just need to release actual games on a consistent basis.
Games that people actually want.
You can only try to sell me Rogue Galaxy so many times.

Also, keep trophies. Lots of people care about that shit.

It's dead at this point. Requiring trophies was ridiculous but literally the only way they could charge you for games you already own.

They just need konami, capcom, sega, and major third parties to get on board. When Natsume can release harvest moon, the bigger companies really don't have an excuse.

I liked the idea of PS2 games on PS4 initially, but with the PS4 getting so many games on a weekly basis, I just don't have the time to care about them anymore. I've bought probably a dozen of them on sale and haven't touched a single one of them because I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with new games.

All they can do, indeed, all they should be doing, is making more titles available on the store in general.

They should be aiming to replicate the PS3 PS2 classics section in regards to amount of games available for purchase, everything else falls into place via sales and such.

That includes games already available via PS3 remastering and otherwise. You need as big a library on PS4 as possible. Atlus should be on board already, where are they?

I think maybe they required too much effort. I also think making people buy them again wasn't wise. But the process should require as little effort from devs as possible. Maybe more will get on board then.

I already bought Maximo on PS3. I won't pay again on PS4 because trophies (if Maximo were to come).

Where is the indication that PS2 games haven't been selling well? You need to give numbers and sales expectations before you can say something like that.

That's a good start.

The best thing solution for consumers as well as publishers and developers would be to consolidate PS2 classics on both PS3 and PS4. They should offer all of the games for sale simultaneously on both systems with cross-buy, so consumers can have confidence that their game libraries are persistent (much like what Microsoft does with Xbox 360 games in Xbox One).

Trophies is the only reason I'm buying them.
Sony just need to release more blockbusters.

BTW where are the proof they are not selling well?

I'd buy silent Hill right now...

I never played 4 and walked be nice to have those late releases as well.

Fuck trophies if it means this level of support.

Just sell ps2 roms running in the new emulator and tweak resolution and other enhancements on a per game basis to make sure they run ok.

I'd just like more options, mix of classics/random stuff

Any rewards system is overthinking it, beyond adding them to PS Plus or something (in addition to normal games so you don't get an added layer of whining for "old games")

I'm not buying any ps2 game that doesnt have the online functionality of the original. I dont care what price it is.

They would have to be remasters in that case. No PS2 online functionality was ever supported with PS3 or PS4 in mind to begin with.

The big problem seems to be that Sony wants every game to have trophy support which Devs don't want to do.

I think another problem is that the storefront page looks cheap for these games. Many of them don't have the trailers and screenshots that Sony requires for even mobile ports. Instead, for most, there is a static screen displaying the box art in the corner This seems to me to be the equivalent of a company releasing a new physical game in a paper bag and then complaining when it won't sell. There's good stuff here but Sony doesn't seem to be trying to actively sell it to new customers.

All they need to do is bring PS1 and PS2 classics to PS4 and they can rectify this. I have absolutely no intention of buying VC on any platform if I believe it is going to be stuck there. Yeah, they have to work to make emulators on future hardware. Boo hoo for Sony but they absolutely have to do that if they expect me to buy their classics on anything but original hardware.

I think it's over at this point. IMO they should have built PS2/PS3 hardware emulation into the PS4 Pro, so they could sell those titles to enthusiasts digitally. The Pro probably has all the horsepower it needs to run PS2 games in 4K (or at least 4K checkerboard), so it would have given 4K owners an incredible wealth of game content.

Then if that worked out, they would integrate the hardware emulation into the next baseline revision of the PS4 Slim.

Well its a strong assumption from thier release schedule, but we hear nothing about them or psone while we have a better feeling on bc 360

They need waaaaaaay more variety/3rd party support for it (Awkward saying this for Sony lol). Put a lot of JRPGs from the PS2 days on it and you got my money. Arc the Lad isn't enough.

How about Sony release a real BC console with PS1, 2 and 3 ability. Nobody will pay digital titles, but alot of people would play theire BC games and upgrade. Got a shitload of PS2 backlog, that I would play on PS4. Bring back the EE chip

Bring disc based PS2 backward compatibility to PS4. Make trophies and high resolution available for an added fee.

Bring disc based PS1 backward compatibility while they are at it.

I also question Sony's entire vision for "PS2 on PS4". Were they just planning on tossing a few titles out as an "experiment" or to fill a few gaps in the library? Or, are they looking at the big picture over the long-term, where these games remain available for years and decades to come?

I think Sony really needs to look at the effort Microsoft is putting forth to bring Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, and replicate that with PS2 games on PS4 (and PS1 games on PS4, too). Make the discs playable, and allow consumers to carry over their previously purchased PS1/PS2 classics from PS4.

I'd love to know what third-party developers and publishers think of Sony's handling of their vintage game libraries, versus Microsoft's handling of theirs. I can't imagine that they really want to go through so much trouble to comb through old code, program in trophies, resubmit it, and hope that customers aren't irked enough by being asked to "repurchase" their games. It seems like they're much more accepting of Microsoft's strategy, judging from the staggering difference in the numbers of games being approved for release.

I know y'all are saying scrap trophies, and, I get that's probably a big factor in this whole debacle...

...but, it's a big selling point for me. I'm sorry to be part of true problem, but, I can't lie. If they released Persona 3 with trophies I would die.

One thing that baffles me is why Sony didn't have ICO and Shadow of the Colosus ready for the launch of Last Guardian. I actually searched for it in the PS Store that month because it seemed like such an obvious decision.

Trophies can stay as long as pricing and game releases can come IMO

Trophies don't hurt but they don't do much in truth when you just want to play a game, so if I don't have a little icon that says I did something, if you really need it you can write it on paper and keep a pdf or something ;) just kidding there, but yeah... IF it hurts game releases then it should go but honestly I don't think it is... an excuse to test their higher pricing tier and yeah I am sure they may have did something that caused pricing to spike on development of the titles BUT they need to address this issue as well. Get more games, running as well as possible without having to spend so much on each title to get up up and running.

I don't know what their solution is and not sure if it's really known or not? I thought it would just be an emulator but I feel there has been mixed messaging on how Sony is doing it.

Too late now. They already fucked it up for this gen. We'll probably just continue to see a slow trickle of PS2 games released over the next couple of years.

Maybe they'll get it right on PS5.

Pretty much my thoughts on it too. This should have been PS1/PS2 BC from the start, even if it was just with digital versions bought on PSN. Their handling of this ensured that I don't buy a single PS2 game on PS4 because they have set the precedent for not carrying over content. That precedent has made me much more cautious of buying anything on PS4. I went from PS4 being my main platform to only buying exclusives on PS4, and I only buy them in physical form even though I am digital only in the rest of my gaming.

I have a huge library of PS1 and PS2 games on PSN. I bought a lot of them because it seemed like a no brainier to me that they would be supported in PS4. Their decision to recharge for PS2 games lost my trust PS, and it's going to take a lot to get it back.

Just put decent games on them and stop worrying about bells and whistles. I'd love to repurchase stuff like Digital Devil Saga or Xenosaga on PS4. If trophy shit gets in the way of that, scrap it.
