DF Retro: Metal Gear Solid 2 - A Kojima Masterpiece

Oh hell yes DF Retro is back baby. What a great choice of game too!

My favourite YouTube show, definitely be watching this later.

Been waiting for this one.

As much as I love MGS3 (and 1), MGS2 is the one game in the series I would consider almost-perfect, the mechanics, the action, the flow, it's a game I could speedrun at least once a year and never get bored of trying to 100% it.

While my most beloved MGS is 3 the overall craft and polish of MGS2 is the best of the series, such an awesome, awesome game.

And a big article.
The demo continued to play at Konami's booth throughout E3 week drawing tremendous crowds at all times. At a show when most of Sony's booth was focused on playing DVD copies of The Matrix, this game really stood out and single handedly contributed to the rising hype for the PS2's upcoming release in North America. The show was a smashing success and Kojima returned home proud of what the MGS2 team had achieved, but it's from this point where development kicked into high gear.

I bought this game on the original Xbox and it was a bit of a mess in regards to the frame rate ended up getting the HD remaster on PSN when it was on sale. Absolutely loved the game, it's sheer madness and really good looking for a PS2 game rendered at that resolution.

Worst MGS by a mile and still pretty good.

Biggest "Holy shit" moment I had ever had visually, no other game came close to this game's E3 trailer's and demo's wow factor ever since.

Didn't know the player models, which look great, were that low poly.

Too bad the experimental Shinkawa art version of the models looked ugly.

Best MGS by far and even in my top 5 games ever.

Really didnt like it when i first played it all those years back but after a few more playthroughs and understanding it better its just so good. Plus the things you could do at the time were so ahead of its time.

You know when a game is special that if you see some scenes in this video it brings you right back how that moment felt.

A game so ahead of it's time.
I'll be watching this later on when I have the time

Kojima was so crazy... governments spying on their own citizens, intercepting all kinds of network traffic, shaping information, trying to use the internet to rig/move the needle in elections, lol... crazy tin foil hatters... as if they really did that...

(Conversations happening when the game came out... crazy tin foil hatter indeed ;))

Just last night I was playing that Kingdom Hearts collection and thinking about how nice it would be if they put MGS2 in 4K on the PS4. I'd love to do a 5th playthrough.

I'll comment here something that I also posted on their video.

Why does press keep doing things like "A Kojima Masterpiece"? Did Hideo Kojima single-handedly develop the entire game and all its assets? I'm quite sure he didn't. Then, why on Earth don't we stop treating the directors like all-powerful gods and start crediting video game development as a collective achievement?

Because we as a society are so used to how Cinema or Music treats it. There can only ever be one artist with top-billing, for films it is director, for games it is the designer, for music it is the lead performer in many instances.

You're right that we should stop doing it, but I just would like to say, it is far from exclusive to games, and is hence a larger problem.

Because more than anything, Metal Gear and the Metal Gear Solid series is a product of his vision. Of course he didn't single handily create the game, but without him none of the series would exist. It also serves as a compliment to Kojima's association with films and Hollywood.

Because the game director is the one with the vision, oversight and accountability. Same reason it's done in movies. We all know it's a collaborative effort but that doesn't mean all positions are equal.

When was it that opinion transitioned so positively for MGS2? I remember for the longest time it was nothing but positive hatred for the game

I'm pretty sure the Xbox 360 controller didn't have pressure sensitive face buttons. How were those features implemented on the 360 version?

And I'm going to say that pressure sensitive face buttons is one of the worst controller features ever. If the 360 version's solution is great, that will be the best way to play today.

True, but a great creative vision does not equal a great game if certain conditions are not met. A director or game designer can have revolutionary, groundbreaking, innovative ideas, but if he/she does not have a human team that lives up to that, those ideas are worth nothing. Ideas are either brilliant or failed depending on the professional quality of the whole team that's behind their creation. If one of them fails, the end result will probably fail too since it won't be as cohesive as it could be.

I love this game but sadly the gameplay doesn't really hold up. The only way to render enemies unconscious is by capping them with darts. I liked how you could throw enemies around or non lethal choke them in sequels.

I don't think 3 was better on Ps2. Its on PS3 where I felt 3 was better, 60fps really worked wonders there. MGS2 on Ps2 was ridiculously slick and the image quality was through the roof. Thats why I think this is one of the best looking games on the system.

MGS2 is the best MGS and probably the only one that deserved 10/10s.

It is a testament to how timeless a game it is, as it STIll looks impressive visually/aurally and the post-modern metafictional story is something very few games have been able to do right.

I remember having trouble doing the hold-ups, especially in the VR missions on the PS3 version of the HD collection (was curious if it'd be easier on 360), so I did some reading up on it.

Apparently you need to push/hold down on left analog-stick when pulling up a gun that isn't semi-auto.

No you absolutely can choke people out in MGS2. I believe it is 7 or 8 taps and if you go over, you snap their neck. It's essential for non-lethal runs and in VR missions. and you can use melee or throwing to knock enemies out, but it's time-consuming and not as reliable so I don't utilize it.

Didn't realise the PC port had a fix, might have to try that out. Great vid.

I got my PS2 with MGS2 and Gran Turismo 3, I was actually more impressive by GT3's visuals but looking back MGS was doing so damn much. And both ran at 60fps! (most of the time)
