Yay, another Marvel movie that takes itself even less seriously than the other movies already do. I think I'll pass. Baby Groot alone seems like a forced gag machine that has been tested like crazy in focus groups.

The obsession some people have with what other people think of 'their' franchise films is utterly baffling to me.

Why is this so important to some people? It's not as if you aren't going to see the fucking thing is it?

Baby Groot alone seems like a forced gag machine that has been tested like crazy in focus groups.

To be fair that's almost everything nowadays and given the success that Disney had with B88 it's tough to say that they shouldn't do it.

It's as if B88 was created from a focus testing group that plugged straight into GAF's collective hive mind.

I rewatched Guardians of the Galaxy 1 the other day and it was even better than the first time I watched it. Would argue either GotG1 or Civil War is the best MCU film. And if the sequel is more of the same with tons of jokes and whatnot then I'm totally in. What I want is more of the same and new characters like Mantis, and more time with Nebula.

To me, the GOTG series is the only one I'm cool with not taking itself too seriously. It kinda fits, despite the end of the first being comically bad on top of another who gives a fuck a villain. If 2 is like 1 which it looks like, I'm all in for it.

I'm not super surprised by the reviews. Felt something was off when they showed off a clip with the characters using weirdly gross potty humor, totally different from the subtler Jackson Pollack joke in the first movie.

It's the sort of thing I was worried Guardians 1 would have and really didn't.

I also expect Spider-Man to get similar reviews this summer, if not worse, but I hope not.

So just got done with the movie. The tone was all over the place, the humour mostly landed (although at times relied too heavily on slapstick), but the emotional scenes all fell flat. It was like the movie was too afraid of letting the audience feel anything other than laughter, even during pivotal emotional scenes they wouldn't let go on for more than 30ssconds before cutting in with some inappropriate lame joke. It's a shame because removing those few shit jokes that were awkwardly placed during those few dramatic scenes would have balanced everything perfectly. Instead the movie comes off as a worse Guardians of the galaxy 1 at its best and a Adam Sandler movie at its worst.

You're describing the first movie to me. That's what bothered me back then.

I'm completely surprised by how well and nostalgic the critics in the OP talk about Vol. 1. It was a fun movie but it definitely had issues regarding tone, pacing, characters, plot and the villains.

I still liked it quite much, but I was also really bummed becaused it had so much more potential which wasn't used properly. It sometimes felt like the movie wasn't allowed to stray TOO far from the Avengers routine, which would have been needed to get it from good to great, imo.

I will certainly watch Vol. 2 but I just can't relate to reviews speaking of GOTG's "legacy".

It didn't bother me in the first film because it had a much lighter tone and the jokes felt appropriate most of the time. But in this film, and to the writers credit, they really attempt to develop the characters. The characters are all super likeable, which often brings with it these very emotional scenes. But it's like Disney don't trust their audience to feel empathy or are trying to please the people who are there to see a comedy. It's frustrating because this film could have been one of Marvel's best if they had cut about 30 seconds of inappropriately placed footage out

Tonal switches
Jokes at random moments

Yup sounds like a James Gunn movie still would like him do another Super type film inbetween the GOTG films

In the 90's on RT so far. Based on the reviews I've read, I think I'm going to love it just as much as the first. None of the criticisms really resonate with me so far.

One last thing, everyone lower your expectations for the "five post credit" scenes.
Ones really funny, the rest kinda terrible, and none add anything to the story or tease anything big

92% RT with a 7.5 average rating. If it carries on like this the first page of this thread is going to look hilariously out of place.

I have read most of the spoilers and i disagree, the potential of one of them is so huge for the future of
MCU
and potentially
all marvel movies

Edit

I think i meant to quote Alienfan . Sorry

What scene if you don't mind me asking? I'm not a huge reader of the comics, so I probably totally missed it. Maybe PM me to avoid accidentally spoiling :)

I read the first page of this thread and got the impression the movie wasn't good at all.

Then I checked the RT score, user scores, Metascore, etc.

Yeah seems like the ones OP posted are saying its just more of the same which.... if you liked the first is great news!

The Stan Lee scene , which point to him as the Watcher which potentially means that all/most his cameos in movies are/ maybe actually in character. The watcher basically observe huge events in the marvel universes and each universe have a similar looking watcher. This basically means that all marvel movies even from Fox and Sony is potentially part of an multiverse. The watcher is also tightly linked to Fantastic Four which mean Fox may be playing ball and we may get FF soon in MCU. Basically it means potentially noting is impossible now for MCU/ Marvel movies

Yup lots of potentials there.

No idea what was instantly iconic and unforgettable about the first movie. How good was it really if that kind of momentum wears off before you've even left the theater to the sequel?

I really don't know how to feel considering GOTG was one of the top 5 comic book flicks ever. I thought James was gonna Spider-Man 2 this thing, but he gave us Iron Man 2 :(

I just saw it.

I thought it was good even though it never touch the greatness of the first one. The first 30 or so minute lacks direction but it was fixed quickly in the middle part. And although the end is a typical superhero third act, there's something sad and dark about the whole thing.

I did think the song choices are a bit of hit and miss, again mostly in the first half. The villain's intention is pretty....existential and amusing for comic book villain. Definitely unusual at least.

I don't know how much more I can say without being spoilery. If you have questions, I'll try to answer them.

I think you are reading way too much into what seems like a fun easter egg

Read the first page, and then read the fifth and I'm oh yeah, people overreacted. Movie sounds good.

If you trust reviews, they don't seem to suggest that at all actually.

It's more Age of Ultron than IM2. I find IM2 to be plain boring. GOTG2 is still fun and fantastic to look at but a bit lacking in direction and cohesiveness of the first one.

Yes. Do agree. First one did not really have any of those qualities bar perhaps the first 10 mins.

Towards the end, it was entirely mediocre.

If you ignore the utterly awful second act twist that basically ruins the MCU as a setting. God, that was so damn stupid.

You mean the amazing and beloved twist that helped make the movie great and is part of the reason it's held in such high regard? Say what?

Do you ever not troll Marvel threads? I mean you basically admitted to it in the DCEU thread recently.

There is literally no logic to what you just said.
