Samsung Galaxy S8 · S8+ |OT| - Available April 21, 2017

After about a week of usage. I can find the fingerprint sensor fine, but still usually takes 2-3 attempts to register right. Haven't had a sensor this finicky ever lol.

Iris doesnt work well with my glasses so I usually just use my pin lol.
Us 4 eyes gotta stick with inferior lock screen protection.

I was not expecting the iris unlock to work as well as it does, in virtually every environment.

Also, regarding whatever it is that makes the screen feel so good to the touch: I hope it doesn't wear off like most screen coatings do.

It uses infrared. That makes it work even with low light

You can only have sex with it 50 times before it wears off.

so a strongly worded email and a phone call was enough for them to approve the gear vr lol.

No clue why they didn't just ship the headset with all preorder phone orders to retailers.

'day 1 edition box'.

Everyone gets one regardless of the 'free' or $99 package right?

Can people post their screen on times? iPhone user here and I dabbled in Android with the 6P but had to return to the iOS ecosystem due to the stellar battery life on the iPhone.

First time I measured on my 2nd day I got 7h SOT and 28 hours of the phone being on and still had 6% left.

You will not be getting 8hrs out of this thing regularly. All reviews are pointing to average battery life, around 4-5hrs.

Well I'm at 30% right now with 5h SOT. And I have below average signal at my house so my phone drains quite a bit faster than normal when I'm home. This is all without the power saving modes too.

This is with 30 mins of GPS usage, 1 hr 15 mins of phone calls btw.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good Android walkthrough? Picked the S8 up yesterday and haven't used an Android phone ever. Not really sure what some of the best apps, settings and shortcuts are.

Been using Windows phone for the past 4 years, so mostly just trying to get used to what all I can do with this. Examples are stuff like home screen customization, the difference in the app selection screens (guess one is shortcuts, the other is all) and where to turn off/on quality of life settings (like foreign language keyboards or location detection in the main OS)

Loving most everything about the phone so far. Is the Samsung stuff worth getting signed up for? Before switching I read that a lot of the Samsung OS stuff is bloated or broken.

Thanks for any help!

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the battery on 8+. Im a heavy user and I can easily make it throughout my day with juice to spare. Don't know about the 8.

samsung really is quite aggressive with memory management eh? reminds me of huawei. Might as well just 2 gb of ram.

Dont' remember how the samsung homescreen is at launch. I think its swipe up or down will bring up a list of all your apps that you can swipe left and right to navigate. If you want to put on home screen, hold the icon down and you can move around, put over other apps to create folders.

holding down anywhere on the homescreen will bring up more options and settings, and you can put widgets down too, which quite a lot of apps have something.

Best apps, well... thats a bit vague. There are official apps for all the social media platforms you use, and good 3rd party ones too for twitter or reddit etc.

Settings, the nice thing about it, is that there is a magnifying glass at the top right, and you can just search for the key terms you are after, 'keyboard' etc.

It's worth having a samsung account. bixby is trash, but most of their other stuff is good or better than google equivalent imo.

samsung account lets you get themes, and use samsung pay (if you are in a country that supports it), which is super convenient, and nets you reward points for just using them, can redeem for gift cards and what not.

visit the android OT if you have more general app questions or what not. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1218468

1. If this is your first android, maybe stick with the base experience for now and just use the launcher (aka the software/windows version) that came with the phone for now.

2. If you go to the app store and switch tabs, you should see the top paid apps, top free apps, and maybe some editor's choice apps. Download those that make sense to you.

I think that with getting top downloaded apps you should be good for now. At that point just get used to shortcuts in your phone, your settings menu, google voice assistant, etc...

Once you're more comfortable, you can probably consider switching launchers. Samsung ones are notorious for starting well enough but eventually getting slow as hell. Nova is arguably the most popular one in the store, but it'll cost you money.

My biggest recommendation for apps to download:

1. Google rewards- as you go on your day to day activities you might get some polls such as did you go to x store, or online based ones. you get a couple of cents here and there.

2. Waze- social GPS. You've probably heard of it.

3. You might eventually want to consider a podcast app if you listen to a lot of podcasts. I recommend Pocket Casts though it costs money. If you don't want to pay, Podcast Addict is a nice free alternative and almost as good.

I get 7+ hours on screen time easily with heavy usage, the only major feature I've turned off is the always on display.

The 6P was rubbish interms of battery life, like most nexus phones before the pixel came along.

For some reason, when I leave my phone uncharged overnight, e.g. ast night I had it at about 90 %, when I woke up it lost like 20% battery. Is this normal?

I left mine unplugged overnight last night and definitely didn't lose anywhere near that. Also I had the always on display turn off overnight.

How well does iris unlock work when wearing glasses though?
Extremely well. I haven't had any problems so far unlocking the phone. Sunglasses of course don't count.

Same. Thats not normal. Check battery or a 3rd party app to see whats keeping it awake and using battery. It may even be poor cell reception as the culprit.

Using Smart Lock in the car is great. Considering tying it to my Fitbit. Speaking of Fitbit, I can't get notifications to work on my Charge 2.

Hmm, the only app I had "disabled" was "lookout" which came with the phone.

How do I check what app/thing is using all my battery life?

Do you have any 3rd party app recommendations to check this?

Bought thhe Galaxy Pack but the battery life was taking a big hit so went back to the infinity one.

Also, backed down to FHD+. Is there any benefit from the higher resolution right now?

And fucking glass screen protector falls off because the little glue they used went to shit. Crap.

VR? Don't know.

I feel like the reverse question is true too. Like from tests there doesn't seem to be a notable performance or battery hit from 1440p mode.

No reason not to have it at 1440p lol.

I've had my phone about a week and love it. The battery life is ok, the eye scanning security feature makes me feel like a secret agent, and it plays all of my games flawlessly.

My s8+ is finally arrives tomorrow... I'll not be home to sign for it so I'll probably get it on saturday morning from the depot. Can't fecking wait.

After my Note 4 feels more and more sluggish and it doesn't looks that great anymore with stuff like finger sensors and the Puls sensor don't work anymore I'm more a soon owner of a Galaxy S8 Plus.

Using my phone for navigation and travelling a lot I don't think anything smaller is a good idea for my needs.

Excitement!

This phone is amazing. I went into the Verizon store today to check out getting an upgrade for my wifes Moto X and can't believe how sharp this thing looks. The screen is stunning and the demo model ran buttery smooth. I was about to pull the trigger and get it for her too, but the size might not be ok for her since she usually likes the smaller phones and this even in the regular form is a bump from what she has.

I don't have that issue. I scanned my eyes when I had my contacts in and it worked flawlessly. I switched over to my backup glasses and it is still working perfect.

Don't know if my green eyes are just easy to read or what.
It can't read my eyes through my brand glasses

I have special eyes.

Wonder if it's due to the assorted coating and stuff on my lenses? Also the way I angle my phone my eye is always behind the frame of the glasses lol.

Just a lot of hassle.

Iris doesnt work well with my glasses so I usually just use my pin lol.

Scan the same finger multiple times and try different angles. Works flawlessly for me, in addition to the iris scanner. I wouldn't be surprised if the next step was my phone unlocking for me when I fucking think about it.

Man, I've had this phone nearly a week and I'm just bored and impatiently waiting on my Gear VR to ship.

Anyone have some good recommendations for this phone? I've been thumbing through the app store for any decent games.. Not much luck. Might try buying some E-books.

Dynasty warrior one is kinda fun and looks nice.

Not sure what else would push the phone. Companies don't make hefty games anymore on phones lol.

Is there an easy way to add a custom sound for notifications? In ringtones there's an add option but there isn't for notification sounds.
