Features have always been a part of Gorillaz and this album has a concept that requires a lot of guests to work. It's a natural evolution from PB.

Well, do you consider Plastic Beach a Gorillaz album? I mean, I don't know how you can say this about Humanz and not the same thing about Plastic Beach, which I remember having a ton of featured artists and whatnot. It's been a thing since the beginning, too, really.

Yes, of course I would consider Plastic Beach a Gorillaz album. While this has been going on since they started, they have at least sung in some parts of their songs. I don't hear them at all in these new tracks. I don't even hear anything that I would consider to be Gorillaz.

Can we not do this
Like at all.
You could say the same shit about Plastic Beach.
The only members of this band are Damon and Jamie who does the art. No one's stopping you from saying you don't like it or being disappointed but we don't need the "it's not Gorillaz because XYZ bullshit reasoning" in here.

I can see that but there were quite a few tracks on Plastic Beach where they did sing along with the guests. This doesn't seem to be the case here.

Damon appears on more songs here than he does on PB... he's literally not on White Flag, SFJ, Sweepstakes, Cloud of Unknowing, or Glitter Freeze at all

on Humanz he's on every single track on the main album (with very minor roles on Strobelite, Carnival, and Submission.) The only song he doesn't appear on at all is Halfway to the Halfway House on the Deluxe.

Yeah that's nonesense. He's on more tracks than not.

It's perfectly reasonable to want more of his singing, and there are some tracks that would have benefited from more of his presence, but it's just factually not true that he's not on these songs lol.

Gunna wait a few more hours til it's up on Google play. I have the leak a listen or two, but without bonus tracks and just the stuff I haven't heard. I like it, but I do understand the complaints. But I feel like it'll be a grower as was Plastic Beach. There's several great songs on here and there's nothing I dislike but there's no Rhinestone Eyes or Broken or anything and that disappoints me. Not really a huge fan of Busted and Blue.

Been holding off listening to the leaked album in prep for this and I'm stupidly excited. Saturnz Barz has been on repeat in my house for weeks now.

Rhinestone Eyes is a GOAT gorillaz song. Absolutely one of their best. I hope Busted and Blue is better than the leak because not a huge fan. Hope that Carnival is also longer.

No Carnival is not longer than the leak and no he's not on SFJ. The chorus in that song is sung by Gruff Rhys.

Oh shit you're right! :p SFJ is so great.....my favorite rap in any of their songs.

Tbf Gruff sounds exactly like Damon on that song

True. That's why I thought :lol

yeah but that just begs the question of why he even bothered giving that part to Gruff lol

wow the above post is a real hot take. Nothing says "trying to be hip" than putting Grace Jones and Carly Simon on your album!

This album rules. Favorite tracks from the deluxe would have to be Submission, She's My Collar, Strobelite, Ticker Tape, and Out of Body. Can't wait for Oct to be finally hearing from these tracks live and in person.

OP, your post is awesome but you forgot to mention the other tracks of Phase 3 besides the Fall: Doncamatic and probably the best track to come out of phase 3, DoYaThing, a 13-minute track with Andre 3000 and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem.

Haven't listened to the album yet but I wasn't into the prerelease singles outside of Ascension, which was basically just a mid-tier Vince Staples track so of course it was good. Hopefully I like the full thing a bit more but some of the impressions certainly have me worried. I was always more of a fan of Damon's non-Gorillaz stuff anyway tbh.

This album is garbage.

It's sad how desperate Damon is to be down with the fellow kids.

Do you understand that these features really aren't anyone big? Only Strobelite I see will be big with so called "kids", but that's because it's catchy as FUCK. Don't understand this sentiment at all to be perfectly honest. Bet you liked Drake's new album...

How can anyone not like Busted and Blue...it's a gorgeous track

Audio quality for me from the leak. It was literally BUSTED and sounded super shit.

I've listened to it like twice since it originally leaked and it just hasn't gripped me yet. Though I haven't given any of the leaked stuff a full listen outside of "She's my Collar". Just skipped around a bit.

Ah, you gotta listen to in sequence. The way it transitions from Andromeda is *kisses fingers*. It's a good way to break up the album, with a nice slow, depressing, atmospheric track.

Once I grab the vinyl I'll give it a full playthrough and just lay in bed and take in the whole album.

She's my collar? HOOOO BOY. I love that song.

Busted and Blue is a beautiful song but it doesn't really grab me. Not a bad song at all.

Yup, agreed though I've mostly skipped it because of the audio :/

LOVE this album(even as a big fan of the first album way back when it came out)! I honestly adore the way their style and album composition has evolved over the years.

Also do not forget the other news that is rolling out today: Jamie fully confirms that a 10-episode run of a Gorillaz animated series will be happening in 2018. Also confirms that a clothing line is on the way as well. Prepare your wallets.

http://exclaim.ca/music/article/gor...ing_line_are_coming_says_artist_jamie_hewlett

Ever since the group formed in 1997, Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn have floated around the idea of a Gorillaz feature film. They discussed it on many occasions, but a few years back they put the speculation to rest. And while that is disappointing, Hewlett has now admitted there is an animated TV series in the works.

In an interview with Exclaim!, Hewlett reveals they have an order for ten episodes that will air some time in 2018. "I'll direct the first and the last one, but we'll have to get someone in to direct the other episodes," he says from London. "I think even attempting to do it all by myself will kill me."

While the group have dabbled with CG and 360 virtual reality for their new video, "Saturnz Barz," he says the series will be two-dimensional. "They'll be that way from now on. I think it's a beautiful style of animation. Everybody does CG now, and it is great when you're making backgrounds, like environments and landscapes, but not the actual characters. I'm still very much inspired by the work of Chuck Jones, and I love that animation. It's art. I'd like to keep the characters in that style for the rest of this campaign. So the characters on the show will be 2D, but everything else is up for grabs."

Murdoc, 2D, Noodles and Russel will all be hand-drawn illustrations, but Hewlett says the door is wide open for anything or anyone else that appears on the show, which will make a connection to the new album, Humanz (out April 28 on Parlophone). "It could be real footage with real people talking to the characters," he says. "We'll have guest appearances in the series by various artists that appear on the album or whoever we happen to write into the series. Or it could be a mix of collage and photography and a bit of CG as well."

Hewlett also discussed the "Saturnz Barz" video, specifically the sinister looking pizza slice that gives a face to dancehall deejay Popcaan's voice. "The pizza slice is not supposed to represent Popcaan the artist. That would have been insulting. It's the ghost in the cellar," he says with a laugh.

"Originally we had most of the food coming out of the fridge singing. I had the idea a long time ago, but then I saw Seth Rogen's Sausage Party, which I thought was hilarious, especially the orgy scene at the end. And then I realized I couldn't have all of the food singing in the video, because people would make those comparisons. But I kept the pizza slice because I found it to be quite disturbing. Every time you pick up a slice of pizza and go to take a bite, the idea that it might have a face is quite disturbing."

On top of the new album, an upcoming tour and the TV series, Hewlett teases that fans will soon be able to wear their favourite animated band. "We also have a clothing company that I've designed all of the clothes for, which are being manufactured at the moment," he says. "We're doing everything we can with Gorillaz, but it's a lot of work and responsibility. Unfortunately, I'm still the only artist on this project. I don't have anybody who draws like me, so I've struggled to keep up the demand for artwork."

So stoked. Going to play this in store all day. My deluxe vinyl was delayed but Spotify is keeping me satisfied. I love it. The bonus tracks haven't quite clicked with me yet though. I understand why they were left off.

Hadn't felt the few singles I've heard, but I'm waiting to hear the whole album.

Nothing will beat Demon Days for me, but I'm sure this will be like Plastic Beach for me. Not nearly as memorable or constantly replayed as Demon Days, but with a few memorable songs that stick around on my favourites playlist.

I've avoided the leaks so far and I'm excited to give it a listen tomorrow. Plastic Beach is my favorite album of theirs and I hope they continue to evolve that sound. Guess I will find out tomorrow!

Got my deluxe cd in the post today. A few too many rap songs for my tastes, but I like the album overall.

Jamie Hewlett's artwork is gorgeous as always.

I love Plastic Beach, actually. The only song I don't like on that album is Sweepstakes.

Yeah, I dunno. I like me some rap. People have already discussed how much or how little Albarn features in this album, but it does feel like his voice gets lost a little.

I will agree with this. His voice as always sounds great, but it does get a bit drowned out in some of the songs.

Gorillaz will be on Stephen Colbert tonight. Looks like they'll be playing She's My Collar and Let Me Out since both Kali and Pusha T are on their snapchat. Also can someone please tell me how to rip Instagram stories vids? I kinda need that Ben Mendelsohn one where he talks about shaking one's little ass that just popped up right now haha.

Friend is sick so I guess I'll listen to it now lol.

Strobelite is a really fun tune, liking Saturn Barz more than I did when I first heard it.

People listening to it in bits and pieces are really missing out. This is probably their most cohesive album from start to finish. Everything flows so damn well.

I was worried about the number of interludes on the CD but most of them work really well, the non-conformist oath is so damn clever I felt so dumb when I didn't catch it the first couple of listens.

This album though has me really questioning what Gorillaz really is, less my favorite band and more my favorite brand now.
