Why not? There are still tons of games coming out this year and Nintendo is seemingly having troubles shipping new stock of old variations of 3DS. This looks like a fresh start.

Pricing seems high, regular 2DS was like $80.

The New 3DS XL price is still pretty high, this is lower. I'd imagine they keep this + original 2DS for a while, eventually phase out original 2DS and lower this price a bit more, until eventually the platform is done.

Yeah, but it looks like the configuration of the shoulder buttons is identical to how it is on the n3DS, i.e. both button side-by-side horizontally.
