Overwatch Passes 30 Million Players

Awesome numbers! But: Joining game > entering skirmish > game found > joining game > waiting for players > not enough players > game found > waiting for players > not enough players > entering skirmish > quit overwatch.

Yeah no idea why matching players only gives you like 20 seconds.

Might as well make it take longer or just remove it.

I wish other, more deserving, games got these numbers instead. But unfortunately, the name counts for more than quality (Starcraft 2 is a good example for this but in the end, it obviously failed).

how is OW not deserving?

sounds like sour grapes

It's unbelievable how many people are playing this game. I teach kids (age 7-9) and no day passes where I don't hear about them bragging about how they won that game, or how that ultimate destroyed their opponents etc.

Metzen voice cracks and goosebumps have been redeemed for Blizzard.

If only they were reading books.

yeah that's it, I put 200 hours in to this game because of the Blizzard brand, not because I've played other mp shooters and this is one of my favorites!

there's an argument to be made for undeserving popularity in gaming but Overwatch probably isn't the hill to die on for that

This is the most sour post I read in a while. Also this game is actually fun and enjoyable, regardless of the brand. Also the number the players clearly tells that many others enjoy it too, but something tells me you could a give damn about that.

Only multiplayer and very little content perhaps, even a year after its launch. But gotta ramp up more skins etc for them lootboxes

The people making the skins aren't the same people tweaking the gameplay and designing new map layouts or character abilities lol

It seems like Blizzard's games in terms of user base now rank like this:

1) Hearthstone (>50 million)
2) Overwatch (>30 million)
3) World of Warcraft
4) Heroes of the Storm
5) Diablo III/StarCraft II

I don't have any numbers or estimates for WoW/HOTS/D3/SC2. HOTS might be above WoW and I'm not sure if SCII is above D3 or below, so I put them equal.
The D3 and Overwatch numbers are extremely impressive considering they aren't free games.

And D3 sold more than SC2.

Yeah, I wish every level I unlocked some new sweet weapons and rainbow skins for them. I like that level for once means nothing and there's no pay to won garbage, just a genuine fun game.

Who decides what games are more "deserving" of these sales? You?

I would like more characters more often tbh. My only complaint.
My main complaint is the lack of maps being added. 90% of the focus is on skins which really don't add much to the game. It was a bit disappointing coming back to Overwatch to see just one more map added since I left months ago. I heard they're working on three new ones though so there's hope.

See I get that but personally idc much about new maps. Which character I pick decides how I play each map. So depending on what's needed I'll play a single map 5 different ways. Characters are what changes the min to min gameplay. I'd also be cool with EVERY one getting a second alt like symmetra. Imagine the possibilities.

Re: all characters getting secondary ults, I wouldn't be a fan to be honest. One character is enough, if everyone had one it'd be harder to play around heroes and strategize because you don't know what they're gonna do with their ult, at least with sym her ults aren't instant gameplay-changing things that can lead to a wipe like earthshatter, barrage etc.

Plus every character getting a second ult means even less new heroes.

Just want to say that I hope dealing with leaving players is next on Blizzards list. They need to look at what League or Dota do and improve their system.

Amazing numbers and well deserved. It's by no means perfect but I'm still playing nearly a year later and I had no interested in playing a purely PvP game when they first announced it. The Beta won me over.

Wow, Diablo 3 and Overwatch - the three games I can go back to and enjoy as though they are new, year after year. GG Blizz.

We aren't getting many heros now anyway .
I get what you mean about strategy although
I think players would adapt over time to the new ults. Imagine genji throwing a big ass ninja star towards the payload. Or mercy making it so enemies who are killed during a short period after she pops hers have to wait an extra 5-10 seconds to respawn. The possibilities are endless.

Yeah, you do seem to miss the "it reflects my opinion part". I'm not telling others not to like/buy it. I'm saying that it's my post and in this post I obviously decide which game is more deserving.
Then you should've said no when I asked if you thought you were the one that should decide what games were deserving of these sales, not "of course".

Either way, what you're saying is nonsense. It got these sales by being a stellar game, and with that word of mouth helped it further. Absolutely deserved.

I wrote a bunch in front of that "of course", making it perfectly clear. If I had any other intention, I would have stated it, rest assured.

If you want to believe in that, sure.

Ugh, not happy with this at all.

Just because you don't like the game doesn't mean the game doesn't deserve the numbers it got. It obviously got the numbers for a reason, hate it all you want, nothing is going to change that.

isn't it weird that when Respawn announced Titanfall hitting the 10 million player mark, the ensuing thread was such a shitfest of people trying to debunk it and explain why it was a meaningless figure that it needed to be closed

but when Blizzard puts out a number with even less meaningful context (includes completely different monetization models in China/Korea), everyone's all kumbaya

It would help your point if you created a list of GAFers who questioned Titanfall 2's numbers but believed Blizzard's numbers at face value. But that list would probably be like six people.

If they were "deserving" , they would have gotten those numbers... but obv not because they dont "deserve" it.

I wouldn't say something like this. Ignoring me for this part, there are a lot of products in different forms of media that were critically acclaimed (which doesn't have to mean much) and great in all the objective parts but didn't sell the numbers they "deserved".

i mean, that thread was two years ago and has different posters so lol
i mean, it's not like GAF's gotten any better in the past two years as a neutral ground where facts and evidence, presented within the confines of civil, inclusive discourse, prevail through careful moderation

We're talking about numbers and facts. If your opinion is leading you to ignore evidence for the sake of your argument, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯s

I loved Titanfall 1, but it's not like I handwaved away all the EA Access players and Xbox One guest account smurfs and $5 Origin sale copies that were probably in that player count. Likewise, I'd expect people to not ignore the Asian internet cafe free accounts and XB1/PS4 smurfs and free weekend trials that are probably in this player count, just because they like Overwatch.

Xbox Exclusive.
👌

Anecdotally, my queue times have been getting marginally worse over time. I've been queueing for comp around the same time slot (9PM-12AM Pacific) around the same SR (~3000) since season 2 and the biggest difference I see is that there are way more Korean names in my matches than there used to be a few months ago. If the active playerbase is growing, it's not around my neck of woods.

It doesn't matter. If a product is good, people will play it either through word of mouth / betas / free weekends. Overwatch had no where near the player base when it launched... but they offered a "closed beta", a free weekend beta, an open beta, and another weekend beta after launch. Blizzard made a game that can attract both casual and hardcore players, and you know the game will have insane support due to the company. If anything, more companies should start doing what blizzard does.. create a game that will last 5years+ with insane support and maybe they'll start seeing numbers like this too. No one wants to get "good" at a game only to buy another $60 game of the same series year after year. I only see overwatch getting bigger from here.

Cool. Here are numbers and facts then. Blizzard claims, even with all the Internet cafe and alternate business model nonsense, that they have sold 30 million copies. Titanfall claimed 10 million copies. If Blizzard only sold half of what they said, they are still selling 15 million copies which is more than impressive enough on its own and more than.

I don't actually see what the issue is, why we are comparing two random unrelated games being sold, or why the burden of proof isn't on the person making some sort of claim though.

Edit: More than that, the subreddit is the 2nd largest non-default gaming subreddit, Overwatch esports have been televised, it continues to hover near the top of Asian popularity polls, it's the sixth most popular game on Twitch in terms of hours viewed, etc etc. The idea that Overwatch is an overwhelming success isn't really insane and, honestly, it comes off as pretty dumb to pretend it hasn't been regardless of whether you think the game deserves it or not.

You can turn off skirmishes in the options

I have skirmishes off but lately I still get put into rounds with "waiting for players" and get kicked in and out about 3 times before finally settling on a game. This has been recurring since Season 4 started (Quick Play of course)
