Roland shouldn't be the main character. He's the villain of the story.

The more I think on this the more I disagree. You could say Roland has some negative qualities, but he is obviously a vehicle of the "white". If roland is the villain, what is the MiB, Crimson King, Low Men, Mordred, etc etc.

I still wish they just found a way to do a tv series instead. Can't imagine this will be good outside of Elba & McConaughey's performances.

Isn't that basically the exact opposite of how the book goes?

So the gunslinger fled across the desert, and the man in black followed?

You had one goddamn job, Sony.

I mean, technically it's a followup from (Major Book Spoiler, you've been warned)
after Roland claims the Tower and restarts his journey
, but still. I agree that's egregious, and makes no goddamn sense.

Those posters are awful. I'll check it out, but this is moving to Video on Demand territory instead of theatrical release for me. I hope tomorrows trailer makes up for it

Seriously.

The movie isn't just the story of The Gunslinger. It takes elements from multiple books, which should be obvious if only for the fact that Jake is in it. Who is following who changes contextually throughout the series.

Wow, that poster with Roland is the most pathetic gun firing I've ever seen. How in the hell did that get approved? He's a GUNSLINGER and they put that out as promotional material?

Motion posters don't make much sense to me, but hot damn Elba looks great as Roland.

I have to be honest, I'm struggling to see this movie doing well at the box office.

Probably not. Isn't this also a pseudo-sequel/final continuation of the "reset" story at the end of the books? I thought Roland already has a key item in this film. If that's the case, I would imagine that may make casual viewing harder, but maybe not?

I'm almost done with Wizard and Glass. I'm really going to have to cram in a lot of reading in the next month.

Best book in the series imo. Atleast song of Susannah is fairly short but wolves and the dark tower are both pretty beefy. I recommend reading the series before looking too much into the movie, dont spoil anything!

As someone who knows nothing about the book(s?) that twitter exchange is cringey as hell.

All of the twittering they have done about this has been lame as hell tbh. I gave King a pass since he can be a cornball sometimes and it's his line but the Idris/MacCounghey stuff was set up by a marketing dept and has been hello fellow kids shit.

I just feel like all the marketing around this was set up by someone that doesn't understand how to make things look cool or did the best with what they had which is worrying.

That reload is way less impressive than what the book actually describes

Looks like some real boilerplate stuff

I don't recall him ever reloading that way. Pretty sure he
ever just does that reloading trick where he rolls it off his knuckles.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
I thought he was just fucking quick as shit at reloading...no need to fling bullets in the air.

Thank god I'm not alone, i can see it being cool in abstract but i cringed a bit watching it, especially when King describes the unbelievable speed of his fingers when reloading his guns numerous times throughout the books.

I also hope that the blue glow around his gun in one of the motion posters is not in the final film, yes they're made of the blue steel of Elds sword but please don't glow like that.

That's what I'm saying. Visually his knuckle trick would look fucking awesome and unique if they did it right. Instead they are making the shit look like Underworld/any other b action movie.

John Wick looks more like Roland than this guy. They figured out how to do cool reloads!

The bullet on the knuckles wasn't for reloading though.

The hypnotizing was built around his reload abilities like essentially he was feeding rounds into the gun as he fired or something and the manual dexterity for that was part of the hypnotizing. He definitely wasnt doing flips and shit like he had hacked the Matrix.

I'd have to find a passage on it by I thought the description was of him moving the bullets up his knuckles off his gun belt and into the chamber.

I don't think it's possible for me to not enjoy all of this shit. This and Lord of the Rings are p much my all time favorite books-i-want-a-movie-of and I love the shit out of the LotR Trilogy.

There's no way I will not like this movie, anything they've shown looked fuckin' A.

Anybody know what Akiva Goldsman's level of involvement is? Was he the lead writer for this, or did he just take a pass at it? I liked the book series but I haven't been following this movie, and seeing his name on the IMDB page immediately set off alarm bells for me.

Hopefully either this or It is good. As a fan, the success rate of King adaptations throughout my lifetime has been a massive bummer.

the teasers look awesome, the cast is outstanding, i'm definitely going to see this

I got chills seeing the door in live action. Ah, who am I kidding, I'll be watching on premiere day nevermind how bad the reviews might be.

He co wrote in early version of the script that's on the internet. The script seems to heavily correlate with what we have seen so far in trailers and from leaked set pictures. The movie is probably that script with a few revisions.

By the way, how will Detta work if Roland isn't white like in the novels? Maybe make her a racist white woman?

Huge fan of the original series (well, moreso the first four books) and have been waiting for years to see this in live action, despite my skepticism. It's unfortunate but that skepticism is only getting stronger. I'll still be there opening night, but not expecting much. I'll be sad if this kills the franchise's shot at wider recognition.
