Prey Demo: Opening Hour Thread: Everything is Going to Be OK

Does this have sorta deus ex rpg leanings or is it more a bioshock?

I'd say the level and environmental design leans towards Deus Ex/Dishonored 2 hub levels, while everything else leans towards System Shock 2. There's a lot of emails to read.

After being able to use the gloo gun to make platforms that I could jump from across the Lobby to the art things made me decide to get this game soon

It's like a first person puzzle horror game. I love the combat, not too sluggish, but it feels heavy. A good heavy.

Cool, sound right down my alley. Really happy that the large hub designs have came back into fashion somewhat (hopefully dishonoured and deus ex survived last year).

Thanks guys.

I discovered the other way afterwards. Just break the glass in Morgan's office

Really loved the demo, have spent over 3 hours with it so will definitely be picking it up on Friday. However, MY GOD, the hacking mini-game is one of the most infuriating things ever

I'm really surprised no one mentioned this yet. As much as I love the demo and as much as I love the original Bioshock...but this minigame is the absolut worst thing ever lol. It's as shitty as the Bioshock hacking mini-game ...even when you can't compare them in terms of gameplay.

Is it as painfully shitty as the one in Alpha Protocol?

Can someone describe this minigame? I actually love the pipe puzzles in BS1 but that awful fucking minesweeper shit from System Shock 2 can absolutely get fucked.

Hated hacking in SS2, it actually sometimes elicited more dread from me than some of the enemies and whhooooo boy there are some fucking enemies in that game.

Watch from here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/139815598?t=06m38s

It doesn't show spoilers and goes into hacking minigame.

I had no problems with the hacking game, but I only did it 3 times on L1 things.
I just wish it was more like "hacking" than being some arcade minigame. Like Deus Ex's hacking is fun and feels computer-y. Even if it's just figuring out a code like in Splinter Cell would be better than this

Yeah, I get what you mean. It's always going to be fairly dissonant from the actual action you're supposed to be doing. DX's is probably the closest.

I am weak and just bought the game from CDkeys for $35 u_u; They have it for $37 plus a 5% discount code you can get from their Facebook page.

I really wish there was full confirmation that the input lag on PS4 was fixed. I'd rather play on PS4, but if the controls aren't fixed I'll go with Xbox One. I know we have developer confirmation, but I've been burned by that before.

Oh, I can't remember the mini game in Alpha Protocol, sorry :p

edit: Bioshock 2 hacking was perfect btw. This is how you do it.

That doesn't look bad at all.

Way better than pipes or mine sweeper.

EDIT: watched more of that video, holy fuck the System Shock 2 vibes are too fucking strong, I'm having rickenbacher flashbacks.

You need to "feel" the controls. It's awful.

Played around a hour, I saved just when you get the Goo weapon. Honestly some times I don't know if I live in another universe, I come from playing shooters with tight controls (BF1 and Titanfall 2), and then the input lag doesn't seem so bad (playing in a PS4 Pro). And the presentation, art, music and setting is top notch. Strong vibes of System Shock 2. When I clear my backlog a little I'll get it.

So going in completely blind I really liked the demo.

However I am getting real bad flashbacks of Dishonored 2 and it's awful, awful input lag on PS4 Pro.

Aiming the shotgun at a mimic was just about the most awkward thing on the planet.

Love how similar it feels to Bioshock though.

It's an okay solution when you've given up on reaching something that's actually good.

Like someone said earlier, hacking should feel "hackery". Some random pipe dream or Simon says mini game doesn't really cut it.

While Fallout 3/4/NV hacking isn't all that great either, it at least sort of captures what hacking should feel like.

Bioshock 2 hacking fits the Bioshock games fine, but would be awkward in the Deus Ex games or this where it's part of a skill tree and used to block off areas. Personally I think the recent Deus Ex games did the actual mini-game very well outside of it being too easy, but it being worth way too much exp along with how much stuff could be hacked made it unbalanced.

Not sure how I feel about the hacking in this one considering I plan on playing the PC version, but it was certainly awkward on a analog stick with input lag. I like that it's challenging though and that I rarely felt the need for the skill.

Bioshock 2's hacking might not be the most entertaining solution but it doesn't rip you out of the actual gameplay like Bioshock 1 or Prey. That's what I love about it.
It's simple yet not easy.
And on top of that they gave you a tool for automatic hacks...they were rare but very useful.
Bioshock 2 was ahead of it's time imo. It took the best things from Bioshock 1 (except the non-linear gameplay) and combined it with modern gameplay...or...more comfortable gameplay.
Prey comes very close (+ non linear gameplay structure) but has some oldschool mechanics at the same time (like that stupid hacking minigame, lol).

I honestly liked SS2 hacking. It was fast, and making it RNG-based gave you actual motivation to invest in hacking skills without just doing a "skill check" system like Fallout. Debating whether to check an ICE node is more tense than anything in the entire Bioshock franchise.

Although I do miss SS1 cyberspace hacking.

Thanks for mentioning the 5% FB discount. I was already planning to get it so this was just another nice small bonus. Installing now, can't wait!

I'm really really close to doing it today...but I'm afraid the port will suck and I'll get screwed.
But, I'm also afraid that The PS4 input lag won't be fixed so it might be better to risk it with the PC version.

Same here, €30 is pretty cheap, when csn you unlock it in NZ?

Are the Dishonored DLCs good? Saw that the creative director of those was the lead designer of Prey. He also was a designer on the original Deus Ex

Bioshock x Deadspace?

I had no Deadspace vibes. I also don't think this is a horror game. Sure the setting and the creatures could easily come from a horror game, I just never felt under pressure or scared while playing through the demo.
Just for reference RE7, Dead Space 1/2 and Outlast were nearly too much for me to take.
But some people call Bloodborne a horror game, so...

many hours deep and still playing lol. Agreed with the System Shock stuff but man later...wow

Does it change that drastically?

I just think that will not at all be the only title folks compare it to for good reason and some of them won't be just the titles I think most folks are discussing here.

Sounds promising :)
Are you by chance playing on PC? If so, could you please give us some sort of quick performance feedback? Is it at least okayish?

Yes. The level design is as good as in the main game imo, but its (big?) flaw is that it delivers an experience that is very similar. The last level is pretty different compared with the main game, but is probably the worst level of the DLC:
