But that's my problem, why is he on the games show at all? He offers nothing to it. And is he a movie buff? I've never known that, and from what little I've seen of him with regards to movies didn't appear to be one.

He rarely is on Gamescast, and only shows up when he has something to contribute (like he played one of the 4 games he plays a year and wants to discuss it.)

And yeah, movies are his passion. Studied it in college, subscribed to industry magazines, has a lifelong dream of making a film one day, etc.

This is all making so much more sense to me now, thank you haha.

Ya"ll should know by now that the Thursday segment headline for Gamescast is almost always gonna be "bait and switch" as it's based on user questions. I almost never watch them. XD

I kind of want to see if Greg will play "The Surge" since he says that the From/souls games have never really interested him because of the setting.

Kinda Funny is kind of at a crossroads right now where they will be forming their identity for the future. Are they going to be a place you can go to for experts who can bring some insight to the latest happenings in the industry and the latest big games? Or are they just going to merely be a Let's Play house of churning out videos of them being goofy with games as one of the things they talk about, along with other nerd culture stuff? They were able to balance those two worlds pretty decently for a while, but they're probably going to have make a choice soon. I think their new hire is going to be a pretty big hint at their approach. And as someone who is hoping for the first option, I'm worried. Greg is the only one who has experience in that field. Everyone else at the company's background seems more allied with the second option.
Reading this, great comment by the way, it feels like merging the Patreons seems like a natural evolution of things right now. But the risks are too high and it is more sensible to try to salvage KFG (Which from their Perspektive is probably arguable anyway) with an additional ihre and whatnot. Still, wonder if that option has never been at least brought upnamong them.

It'd make sense for them to do that if KFG goes the aformentioned route of losing its importance.

But let's be real, they're not gonna cancel their second Patreon unless something major changes. They've got a ton of people double-dipping and they'd lose out on a boatload of cash if they just dumped the entire thing.

Definitely - shifting their Patreon structure would likely mean people would have to manually re-sub to a new Patreon, or at least destroying one and hoping to make it up in the other. Losing out on that double dipping would be a pretty critical hit to their income, I would think. I imagine they'll avoid doing this at all costs.

He could keep telling himself that but it's not true. He doesn't play those games because he doesn't step out of his comfort zone. He didn't play from/souls because he is not familiar with them and the difficulty reputation turned him off.

Personally, I'd like more game content that just goes into any sort of depth. Way too much surface level content right now. Having guests has helped that a little bit, though the Gamescast structure hurts it badly.

Gamescast was great when they had another deep dive gaming show to bounce off of in PSILoveYouXOXO.

I almost wonder if they'd be better off scrapping Gamescast, and then trying to do a deep dive podcast for each of the 3 major console holders. Problem is I'm not sure that would work either especially for Xbox.

The GoG show problem is it's been going on for so long they've run through all of the easy topics, and they've have probably run their personal wells dry with regards to stories. I don't envy them at all in this regard.

Also they gotta think big. I know they like the hardcore cause of the patreon model.

Yet real growth is gonna come from the casual YouTube audience. They need to focus on getting this overall YouTube sub number up from the low 200k and closer to 500k. Then they need a more natural way to convert those people to patreon.

As of now they just run through the patreon stuff at the beginning of each thing they do just to get it out of the way.

I get why. They aren't growing and most of the people watching already know.

Let's say they can squeeze a 1% conversion rate. That means if they can add another 100k subs that's way more YouTube add money as well as another 1000 people on Patreon.

It also feels like they are banking on their established names from elsewhere vs really embracing and getting a wider YouTube audience especially for KoF non game edtion which could pull in way more of a diverse crowd if they want it.

I love the clickbait fucking videos they have. Those are great.

"Bloodborne 2 at E3?"

Talks about it literally 30 seconds, then they talk about amiibos and move on.

......The fuck was that?

I'd be happier if the switch talk at least varied rather than have it all come back to the same topics. But yeah that clickbait title is something else. I think Greg spent more time talking about the fact that he didn't like it than actually going over the topic.

I can't believe the 2 minutes of ads. How tone deaf are they?

Haha, yeah, I skipped ahead. But I noticed how long they were, so I went back and watched them, and what the fuck was that? Was someone genuinely supposed to sit through all that?

As for the bloodborne thumbnail, I'm pretty sure that's just them going "see, we talk about playstation!"

I think the ads are entertaining, but I'll skip them after hearing it once before the week is up.

Except Greg's this week I found very entertaining so I've seen it like 3 times.

The ads are absolutely brutal, how many times does Tim need to repeat the name of the website (and spell it out) and the promo code? If they're going to do those ads they need to shorten them up considerably. Except they're probably getting paid per unit time or something...

They've been seemingly getting more "click-bait-y" with titles, just the other day they named the YT video of the morning show "Greg and Nick's best show ever" or something, when it was actually the day I had tried to watch it and turned it off because it was so bad. Then there was the GOG topic "movies you won't believe we've never seen!" Just seems like they're not doing anything right these days, they need to do some serious re-evaluation and refocusing.

It sucks that the criticism is getting skewed as the vocal minority, internet comments, h8ers, etc. I genuinely love kinda funny. Really really love it and want it to be the best it can possibly be. It sucks to be shrugged off and rubberbanded by the rabid super fans.

They just posted a survey, time to let them know what we want!

https://twitter.com/KindaFunnyVids/status/863061488931663873

Just posted some long-winded answers to this. Hoping everything came off as respectful as I intended because I really do love their content. I just want to see more structure. I'd like to see the KF Gamescast adopt the EZA Podcast model where it stays topical and current, but subscribers get the shows 2-3 days early instead of a week early.

I'd also love to see them stop reading tips and going on crazy tangents with the KF Morning Show. If the show is two guys at the desk and a little bit of Kevin interjecting, that works for me. I'd just like to see them stay on topic a bit more since that's often the only chance you get to hear their opinions on games news within 48 hours of it breaking.

I'm still really enjoying a lot of their content and feel like there's a much more positive vibe on the shows since Colin left, but I'm craving more structure from them and a touch less goofing around.

Yeah I said all that too. I also mentioned ad lengths when there's already a Patreon and clickbait titles, how they both give the impression that there's a lack of respect from the audience. I mentioned the repetition in subjects/conversations. I also talked about how things have turned into a celebration of Greg/Tim/Nick (see the Kinda Funny Animated Series) rather than a celebration of games/movies/TV/etc. I think that's what leads to long tangents on the KFMS, they forget that they aren't the reason we're there, ultimately we're watching because of games/popculture.

Pretty much my points. I asked that the games should be the focus of their shows not the jokes and trying to be YouTube celebrity.

Re-Ads they never bothered but still I asked them to make them shorter.

That's a great point, I talked a lot about how when they first started out I tuned in for expert analysis and discussion, now it's just goofy jokes and stupid gags. I hope they actually read these, but I'm guessing it'll be Joey giving them a summary of what the surveys say. If they actually read them though, then maybe they'll understand the sense of desperation from a lot of people. Hopefully they'll also understand that most people are coming from a place of wanting them to improve because we like them, not just bitching about what they do wrong.

Totally with what everyone said. I'm turned off because of the random goofing around and idle chatter that occupies large parts of their shows now. I want more discussion and in-depth analysis. I'm ok with goofing off but it's gotten a little too whack off ish about ourselves rather than actual joking about the topic at hand. More structure and focus would be a huge boost imo.

For me, actually, I think I like that more. I think Kinda Funny works better when it just feels like a friend group hanging out for a lot of the time, as long as they get to the industry analysis and such at some point. That's why I love Giant Bomb so much too, I think they do an amazing job at balancing those two aspects.

Morning Show needs to keep it's goofing off vibe. It shouldn't stop them from saying what they have to say on any particular story, but the strength of the Morning Show compared to the rest of the content IS its lack of structure. I don't agree with your guy's criticism of it at all really.

i think some people want like a straight up news show but they've never really been that have they? or maybe people are just missing PSILU because that was the closest to that format with ropers report?

i really only watch morning show when they have guests on.

To each their own I guess. Best comment I've seen yet that seems to sum it up is:

2015: We envision this show as the Mike & Mike of video games
2017: Let's make a ton of pizza!

I liked the quick hitting news elements. The occasional white board gig or tangent was funny, because it was rare. Now it's all the show does, and they drive jokes into the ground and have no focus. Can't even blame the loss of Colin, as this shift happened long before he left.

When have they ever made pizza on the show aside from maybe a BBQ? The only thing I'm not a fan of are the BBQs, and that's only once a week. Everything else must stay. Casual hangout vibe is the strength of that show.

Why would I want to see people messing a round when I could watch a much better comedy show?
I'm sorry but I have friends that I could goof around with. Having comedy in a show is a good thing but don't force it or make it the draw.

That's not true. When C&GL started it was a news show with good discussion - not the deepest mind you - there was some goofing around but not to the current degree.

Look at the title of today's YT upload of the morning show...

Even if they did do that today, my point still stands. It's not like it's a regular occurrence that they make pizza on thee show. #keepKFMScasual

We have the more serious structure for things like the Gamescast or PSILY

Yea so casual when Nick tells fans to kill themselves (which even Kevin was getting bothered by) and continually talks about pedophilia with this Boy Orgy shit.

So casual.

Is that even supposed to be an actual argument against my point or are you just bringing it up as an aside? Because them having some discretion when it comes to saying inappropriate things doesn't go against anything I'm saying I want from KFMS.

Well, with PSILY dying, there isn't much with structure anymore. I haven't watched a Gamescast in forever because I stopped feeling like I was actually gaining any insight from it. Maybe it's changed since then, but if the most recent one I watched is any indication, it hasn't.

I guess it depends on what you look to Kinda Funny for. As I've said before, I followed them over from IGN because I liked their take on the industry, insights, etc. The longer they've been away from IGN, the more "casual" they've seemed and in my opinion, their content has suffered for it.

Also, making pizza is just one example. There's the mug smashing. There's Chad. There's all sorts of dumb jokes that take over the show and detract from the overall experience. IMO that's why they've gone from having 4-5K viewers regularly to 1-2K.

I stand corrected them. I never watched that show I don't think. Was that the one on Twitch that never went on Youtube? My memory is fuzzy.

Colin and Greg Live was originally a live show you could only catch on Twitch. They had thousands of viewers tune in everyday to watch Colin and Greg dissect the news of the day all in their spare bedroom.

People originally even got mad that they read so many tips, but even with the $5 minimum, they still get inundated with them, which is fine I guess.

As ReubyJuice said, alot of us came straight from Podcast Beyond because Kinda Funny provided us an intimate look at their lives in a way we had never seen before. We're just dissapointed that the channel has become so goofy.

Colin & Greg Live was the precursor to the KF Morning Show - they just rebranded it after a while because they wanted to try to revitalize it. C&GL was Colin's brainchild, a sports talk show style but about video games. He always prided himself on it being like "Mike & Mike" a popular sports news show, quick hitting style.

Yeah, I was about to say. You should have this complaint starting from a long time ago. Imagine what "unprofessional" headlines they'd have for countless other episodes if they always posted these to YouTube. I skimmed the video, and it's not like it stops the whole show to show them cooking it for 15 minutes or something like I thought it was about to be.

The antics are a good part of the show, as long as they say what they need to say on any particular story anyway imo.

What I'm saying is their focus shouldn't be on adding absolute structure to the KFMS. I don't feel like it has ever really had that since I started watching in 2015. It was often my favorite show of theirs because of its vibe. If you don't like that, then the show is just not for you. I don't think they should cater too much to fans who demand less silliness from the KFMS.

Their podcasts should be for fans like you who only like them with a more serious structure. I'd hope they just focus on bettering those for people with your specific tastes in KF content, but the KFMS shouldn't have to be that too.

If you look at socialblade, here are the stats you get for KFG on Twitch:
Jan. 1 2015 - Jan. 1 2016 - 15.23 million views
Jan. 1 2016 - Jan. 1 2017 - 2.28 million views

If that doesn't speak to a massive exodus in viewership, I don't know what does. It's clear to me that the changes they brought to the show (in my opinion, the loss of structure) made them lose a lot of viewership. It's fine to say that you don't think they should cater too much to fans who demand less silliness, but honestly I think they should cater to that as it's what made them popular in the first place (on Twitch). Their viewership is down a ton, and they tried to rectify that by rebranding as the KFMS instead of C&GL, but it clearly hasn't helped any.

I may well be in the minority in wanting a dedicated news show (and don't get me wrong, I think that sub chat time, tips, etc. all have a place as well) but it seems to me based on the statistics, that it might just be what more people are looking for. I enjoyed the show a lot when it first began, and watched it religiously for months, if not the first year or more. Then it started to lose momentum for me, and I believe that's due to their lack of continuing the structure.

Well maybe you're not the minority then, but I'd much rather have variety in their shows instead of seeing them more dry and professional on every single one of them.

I think there can be a happy middle ground between "dry and professional" and whatever KFMS is. =P
