Point & Click Adventure Thread 2017 - Pixels Walk With Me

Just recently started Fate of Atlantis...don't know why there hasn't been a HD reboot of this...yet they are quite happy to release it as is on Steam etc....I'll soon make my way to the one hit wonder that was Full Throttle, but ahead of that will be Thimbleweed park..

I don't want one. It'd be expensive to do right, and there's no way it would get the budget to do right.

It'd probably just get a small remaster budget and end up looking too soft like the double fine remasters.

Or the horrible Monkey Island remasters.

Or the horrible Monkey Island remasters.

I think those must have actually had a good budget, everything was totally redrawn.

Just bad decision making. The new gui was awful, the art style was not right, especially for the sprites and the voice cast didn't fit the tone, especially guybrush and the narrator.

Mi2 was even more baffling, since lucasarts had all of Purcell's beautiful artwork that could have been rescanned at a higher resolution, but they chose to redo it anyway.

Who played the order of the Throne?

I did. It's a very short reskinned King's Quest fan game; it's fine, but there are better point and click games you could spend your time on.

I do feel sad for Infamous Quests that they've basically closed down due to the terrible sales of this and their other recent games, but I don't know whether the other proposed games in the series would have been any better.

Damn, that's a shame to hear. And I'll squeeze order in, already bought it. I really love their style... Creative fantasy settings like what they did never get old for me no matter how many kings quest or quest for glory type games I play, I just really enjoy them. But I had not been in the know with their studio and that really is a shame

It's interesting how the older Lucasarts games don't seem to need remastering, but the later ones that got more ambitious graphically lend themselves so well to redraws. The pixel art worked so well, but I could really see a Sam & Max remaster being the next appropriate effort.

Have you tried Contradiction or The Bunker yet? Those are a couple other FMV games that pop off my head right now. Played Contradiction and loved it but waiting for a good sale on Bunker since $20 is kind of steep.

Aw, looks like Pillars of the Earth adaption by Daedalic is gonna be a 3-part project instead of just one full game. Says it's coming August but I'm assuming that's just part 1?

The Bunker was pretty disappointing I found. Really short and simple, and the lack of characters to interact with really hurts with developing personality in a way like Contradiction could.

Has some good atmosphere thanks to using a real bunker though.

Yeah, I absolutely love FMV adventures but it's one of the worst games I played last year.

Just beat Shardlight.

Other than that one silly door puzzle, it was alright for the most part. The ending though I thought could have been better. Still, it was an overall positive experience.

I finished the Blackwell series last week... I'm still thinking about it. What a great series!
And I really like the puzzles, all of them are logical and not too hard, I could solve all of them without looking at hints except one password that is a little unfair with capitalisation.
After I'm done with it, I feel rather hollow, like saying goodbye to an old friend :(.

Which were all tonally different games made by different people.

Armato fit those games, yes.
You're right but it is the same character and having the same voice is much better than changing voice actors which is very jarring. Ubisoft brought Yuri Lowenthal back for the Sands of Time trilogy after removing him from the second game which was bizarre. I personally felt thay Armato did a great job in all the games.

Starflint the Blackhole Prophecy put up a playable demo.

I'm super torn. On the one hand, I'm a fan of their artists, especially the background art, it's absolutely gorgeous.

environments-images-03.jpg

On the other hand, it does a couple of things that rub the the right way.

First, the main character (who is a bit of an asshole either way, but that's almost par for the course) does an absolutely terrible thing and then everything just continues in a jokey, hand-wave manner which is.. a bit off-putting. The game's not exactly sending out black comedy vibes, so I doubt that was the intention, it just comes off as either lack of sensitivity or just utter jaded-ness. Questionable choice. Play the demo and you'll see what I mean.

The game jumps to a new screen showing the character portrait and a huge amount of screen real estate covered by text every time you inspect something. No idea why they did that, it really ruins the immersion.

The intro is overly long for a demo but it's not really a problem.

Aaand a lot of bad translation into English. Maybe to be expected in a demo, and from what I understand it's developed by a mostly French team... But the least you can do, especially with an adventure game, is have a native speaker proofread your stuff before going public with it.

It does an interesting thing where when you mouse over a hotspot it automatically pops the interactions. It's uncommon but I kinda like it.

Anyway, demo's visually solid. Questionable moral stuff aside, a few changes to the interface and better English would dramatically improve the experience.

It's not the same character, it's just the same name; the character himself has changed in personality.

Armato does a great job playing the role of Guybrush as defined by Curse of Monkey Island. He 100% fits exactly how that game works. He fits 4 and Tales too, because those games were written based off how Guybrush was portrayed in Curse. I don't blame him at all, he was probably just asked to do the same Guybrush for the SE's.

Changing voice actors would not be jarring to me whatsoever. Although it's possible that voice acting just wouldn't work for 1 & 2 given that they weren't written with VA in mind. Hard to say until you at least get VA that strikes the right tone though.

Yeah, Flint acts like he's just walked out of a Daedalic adventure. Super unlikeable. Wonder if there was someone in that cyro chamber too, didn't look in it.

I'll forgive the bad translation for a demo, but the GUI is...pretty bad. It sticks to use/look which is one of the simplest P&C interfaces going and removes quite a bit of finesse from the game, but on top of that you can *only* use an item on something that needs an item, which takes even more thought out of the puzzles, as it allows players to instantly discount certain hitboxes and makes the available puzzle solutions even smaller. The inventory itself is pretty clunky, clicking seems to do use/look on its own initiative and you have to drag items to combine. And yes, the screen filling text whenever someone is talking is bad.

Dominic Armato is SO good. Best adventure game character voice by far in my opinion. I can see that it's a controversial issue but to me he's Guybrush and Guybrush is him... In my humble opinion, no one else can be Guybrush! Yes, even weird chicken-looking Monkey 1 special edition Guybrush.

If I had to choose two adventure game character voices that were the best, I'd pick Dominic Armato as Guybrush Three-piece and Rolf Saxon as George Stobbart.

Impossible to disagree there. I can't imagine anyone else voicing Guybrush.

Hello everyone, I'd like to let you know that Agatha Knife went live on steam moments ago.

Feel free to visit the Steam page and get it if you like it.

It's been an awesome 2 year adventure, we hope that the players enjoy it as much as we did the development process.

Thanks for your comments, feel free to get back to me with any doubts you may have.

what's not so great? story? graphic? gameplay? buggy?

I linked a video in that post showing my game being broken and because the game only has one savefile and an autosave function, I can't fix the problem without restarting the game. ):

Otherwise the story so far sounds promising and the music is great. Graphics aren't the best technically, but the art direction is pretty good. It's just really buggy and misses some options. However it seems they are listening and releasing patches so hopefully things will get better.

RPS wrote about your game, congrats!

I still hope the piggy makes it.

Only and only if you've finished Thimbleweed Park, here's their last, spoiler-heavy podcast, and the longest yet.

Gotta go to bed soon, so will write more about it later but I just beat Day of the Tentacle.
All in all I enjoyed it and it is indeed deserving of the praise; the puzzles are quite good. Fastest way to beat the game is to finish up stuff with Bernard first, and when you have nothing else to do, switch to the other two.

Just bought Chronicle of Innsmouth. I have no idea if it's gonna be amazing or crap, but I can't pass on an apparently faithful point n click adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

I know it's a lot cruder but here and there it reminds me of Monkey Island, especially the main character's sprite.

Apologies for this late write up I promised but here are PnCs I've played over the past 4 weeks that I wanted to write about-

Grim Fandango
Beat this a few minutes ago, I can see what people mean when they say that the puzzles are too odd to solve. Though I will admit it has great voice acting and characters. Humor is pretty good too. Lupe is awesome, wish there was more of her in
Year 3 and 4:/

Goosebumps 2015
Pretty straightforward PnC game. You pick up any items you find and use them to get past obstacles or puzzles. There are deaths too but you can retry at the scene before triggering them. I beat one ending in under 2 hours, but fans of the franchise would enjoy it more I'd say.

Hamlet
This was a nice little game, but I felt that some of the 'clicking' puzzles were a little too time based but otherwise it was good IMO.

Detective Grimoire 2014
Another short PnC game, but one that is pretty easy and straightforward. Voice acting and 2D animations are pretty good too. Wonder if we will ever get another game...

Detective Case & Clown Bot
Man this game has such a wonky translation from Portuguese. While the pixel art is nice and the 'confrontation' system is decent, it felt slow to progress through and again the wonky translation really hampered my enjoyment of it.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Gotta say this game lives up to the hype. The humor is light and while I didn't find it too hilarious IMO, it was still enjoyable. The puzzles are also nicely designed and much of it is resolved by using Bernard and completing most of his section early on to get items to help the other 2.
Overall solid PnC Adventure game and I recommend more people to play it.

So IMO DoTT>Grim Fandango

So Fate of Atlantis...is boring me. Should I keep at it just to add to my '52+ Games a year challenge' or just drop it and go play the other Indy game?

Fate of Atlantis is much, MUCH better than Last Crusade.

I can't really advise you as I loved Fate (I liked Last Crusade too!) but I wouldn't suggest the first game on the basis of not liking the second.

People should really just calm down. Remake and remastered aren't just made for people who played the game before. New player like myself have no idea what the game looked like in the past and thought the remake was really good.

Dream machine has a great feel to it so far

Just the sixth chapter or are you starting it for the first time?

I just started Chapter 6, BTW. Considered a replay beforehand but I have wayyyyy too many other games I want to play.

Yeah, I still love this game. Haven't really come up against any serious puzzles in this chapter yet so I can't say anything about them. The art and writing are as good as ever though. That telephone scene towards the start is kind of brilliant.

Yeah, I still love this game. Besides the obvious stuff like the incredible art style, the writing is excellent. Haven't really come up against any serious puzzles in this chapter yet so I can't say anything about them.

Just starting, been meaning to start it but finally just went for it. Love the art direction, reminds me a little bit of Neverhood in ways.

Yeah, it's mostly practical effects. It apparently takes forever to create, especially with such a small team, but you can't argue with the results.

I also love the extea closeups and what not of items and areas, just solid all around..

This genre never fails to fascinate me with how much detail they can add to every scene.
