Press Reactions to Wonder Woman

That's Cooke's (RIP) version of Wonder Woman. This is mainstream DC's Wonder Woman:

And Gadot matches that version they're looking for.

Gadot fits most versions of the character, even the animated series wonder woman had a very similar frame to Gadot. Its always been a thin complaint.

Who still references The First Avenger? As an inspiration, something to aspire to, a reminder, a quote, or anything at all?

Literally every other movie Cap is in uses it as a centerpiece of his character arc in that movie. It's brought up repeatedly, over and over. Cap distrust of forming a team is centered on his apprehension of the new world that he was just brought into in Avengers, Cap visits a museum and fights his old friend bucky in Winter Soldier, Cap finally finds his place in the world in Age of Ultron, which is then shattered in Civil War as he losses the last remaining people of his past with Peggy and is trying to save Bucky largely because he is his first and foremost friend. They even have him quoting himself as his final line in his fight with Tony, "I can do this all day", returning to what he is at his most basic element: A guy who doesn't want to see people hurt others in anger.

No other avengers do this. Iron Man's character arc is a perpetual motion toward stopping whatever Tony is afraid of next, nothing about The Incredible Hulk is mentioned in either Avengers, Thor's interactions with Loki only keep developing into something new and their brotherly relationship of the first movie is all but gone, while Widow and Hawkeye don't have their own origin. Maybe Wanda with how she's trying to find a new home after Age of Ultron and Vision trying to find who he is, but they're very recent additions while Cap has been here from the beginning.

Being the heart of the Marvel Universe isn't just people liking a movie, because I don't think most did think the First Avenger was especially great. But of all the characters, Cap is the only one who has a baseline emotional journey that never strays away from what his origin drives him to do. Tony never so much as mentions Yinsen again, Bruce barely talks about Betty. But Cap? He's always going back to where he started.

Do we want to place bets on getting a teaser for Cheetah being the big bad of Wonder Woman 2?

God I hope not... Cheetah would be a boring follow-up. We demand Egg-Fu!

Hey Anton.

What you think about the possibility the DCEU now has their own Cap?

But it's Diana Prince!

Did you ever think it'd be a possibility that Gal Gadot would be the one to put the DCEU on her shoulders? And is it less or more plausible than the concept of Chris Evans doing the same before First Avenger dropped?

I'm iffy on this happening just because I have no faith in WB/DC to realize they can anchor a universe based on these characters in any character that's not Batman (and to a lesser extent, Superman).

Don't get me wrong; it would be fantastic. I would love a DC Universe where Wonder Woman's films form the lynchpin of the overall arc and decide where things go. I'd love to see her villains raise to prominence (you could build an entire Justice League movie around Circe, damn it). And most of all, I would love to have a Justice League where the heart and soul of the team is not Superman and Batman because all too often, that direction makes the whole affair about dealing with their man pain while everyone else are bit players.

Would love all that. But I don't see it. With Cap, it was easier to move the character into that position because the MCU started with all the Avengers, more or less, on equal ground. The DCEU is starting after decades of "Batman is the only character we have that matters. Maybe Superman sometimes. But the rest are jabronis." Wonder Woman being the first well recieved DCEU means she'll be given a bigger role, but the lynchpin of the whole shabang? I don't have faith in that happening.

Eh. Cheetah is a fantastic villain but maybe not the kind you build a movie around. At least, I certainly can't think of a plot that would warrant it. She'll show up at some point, though.

Circe is next at bat. Now after her? No clue. I hope they don't keep going to the god well.

Other villains I would love to see: Giganta, Doctor Psycho, Silver Swann, Doctor Cyber

I would say there was a definite shift to Cap post-Winter Soldier. Civil War solidified it.

Not that Tony isn't still very important.

I'd say that Tony is the most important character in terms of box-office but Cap is def the heart and soul of the MCU now.

For a post-JL sequel, they need to adapt A League of One.

Her beating the shit out of the Justice League, all to incapacitate them so that she alone has to face a prophecized suicide mission.

Yeah. If nothing else you see how many of Batman's supporting cast are getting movies. But at the same time, BvS and Justice League make an effort to place Diana in the center of the team, both in the movie and in marketing. It's nice to see.

Best part of ‘Wonder Woman' is the film has really funny parts and an optimistic and heroic protagonist. Great step forward for DC Films.

Who would have thought that audiences going to a superhero film would want to watch an actual heroic character?

Exactly.

Man, it's going to suck going from this, if it ends up being as good as it sounds, to yet another trash heap in the fall.

With all this being said, why in the world wouldn't WB take advantage of this and move up the review embargo?

Well, people already know that the reaction so far seems to be fairly positive. Now, WB will want the internet to be plastered with WW reviews just in time for its release so that audiences will have them in mind during the opening weekend. WW is still weeks away and people forget quickly. I remember some talk that Marvel might have been a bit too eager with the embargo on Civil War.

Zack already admitted he's not going for the deconstructionist angle anymore and the writer Chris Terrio claimed before BvS even came out that the Justice League script by nature is lighter and more heroic NEVERMIND the post BvS reception mad-dash creative shakeup to make things...lighter and more heroic.

Which gave us the lighter Suicide Squad edited by the trailer company haha. My point is they're trying to please you, (Yes, you who BvS disappointed) so don't count my man big papa Snyder out yet.

Based cereal king working his magic on the DCEU

...

Most likely due to Patty, but I won't get too excited just yet, I don't always see eye to eye with critics.

Still opening day for me.

It will be interesting to see what people say if the reviews and general reception do come back as positive as this looks. WW was pretty much completely finished filming when BvS came out, so this is the last DCEU film where Snyder had a lot of creative input on without a lot of studio interference.

This might be the best female superhero movie to come out when it releases. I do wonder about Captain Marvel though.

Not commenting on the quality of the movie until I watch it but thank god for the talk about lighthearted, funny and heroic.

Bye Snyder, go and ask Universal to let you direct one of their new gritty and edgy movies for their shitty "classic monsters cinematic universe" and stay away from DC.

I still don't understand the mentality that every comic book movie HAS to be bright, colourful, full of humour, optimism, and heroism (which MoS and BvS had btw). If you want bright, rainbow colours, one-liners every minute, you have over 10 MCU movies and more to come. A little variety is a good thing. Why do you want the DC movies to be a carbon copy of the MCU? It's baffling. I bet you hated Logan too since it's all dour, pessimistic, violent, and is humourless. I bet Logan would have been better if it used the MCU template too.

Dark/gritty =/ bad

Snyder = bad

But since Snyder makes dark/gritty, people like to equate the two :p

No way he doesn't at least try to jam 6 movie plots into it either way, though. It's fate.

No one is saying that. People love dour, pessimistic, violent, humourless superhero movies, or else something as portentous and overwrought as Nolans batmans would have shit the bed. People don't love terrible movies, which has been par for the course when Snyder is involved
