As she travels with the president this week, the first lady — who flags negative stories about her husband while she's in New York — will be in a position to exert greater influence over his chaotic operation.

Melania Trump’s spent her first few months as first lady in New York, only rarely appearing in Washington or speaking at events. Yet friends and aides say she’s keeping a close watch from her gilded apartment in Trump Tower on how her husband is portrayed in the press—and that she’s growing increasingly worried about the anonymous sniping from West Wing staff.

Like President Donald Trump, these people said, Melania Trump is an avid consumer of cable news, and often tracks the news of the day and will alert her husband to stories she thinks make him look bad.

She has raised concerns that some on his communications and press team aren’t doing enough to defend him, according aides and sources close to the president. She’s been especially troubled by background quotes in which West Wing aides criticize the president, and she’s called the president to discuss it.

Her quiet role as private watchdog is at odds with her public persona. Melania Trump has been seen as generally aloof and removed from her husband's political operation since he announced his campaign in 2015, but as his administration has been consumed by infighting and outside investigations, she's grown increasingly vocal about the perceived shortcomings of staff surrounding the president.

“Melania loves the president unconditionally, definitely, she really cares about the president, she feels a kind of protection,” said her long-time friend and former modeling agent Paolo Zampolli, who introduced the couple in 1998. “The main concern to the president and the first lady is that these leaks are unacceptable.”

Its seems like an impossible task when Trump undermines his own staff's carefully crafted excuses, like firing Comey at the advice of the Deputy AG then to turn around and say "Nope, it was all me"...

There's a gif that I can't find now from the inauguration where Trump truns to her, she has on this wide fake smile, and once Trump turns his back her smile, disturbingly quickly, becomes a frown of deep sadness. I don't doubt that she's literally just a prize wife that gets used by Trump but she also loves her position as First Lady, has zero empathy for other people, and puts on a front to seem nice and kind but is actually just as unfeeling and ruthless as Trump. I'm convinced this protection is for the sake of her own name/image/bank account and the family members she likes (aka Baron), rather than trying to keep her husband safe out of pure love.

Wondered if she was actually secretly miserable about the life she chose and was sadly muzzled due to any reciprocation from her husband if she spoke out on his character or illicit dealings.

But no, she's just a vile piece of shit.

Even the worst criticism of her is that she's "complicit". I don't know what word you would use for the opposite of a backhanded compliment, but that's basically what that is. By criticizing her for being "complicit", that's kind of rolled into the idea that she actually disagrees with what her father is doing. Like she could be doing something that she isn't.

It's disturbing how adamant they are that it's the media's fault, not their own. It's like constantly denying who you are, just creating more and more of a facade.

When they trotted Melania out after the Access Hollywood tape to defend Trump, I mostly remember her trying to explain it away at one point by saying she didn't think they knew they were being recorded. Like the real scandal was the mics being live, and not her husband advocating using celebrity to prey on women.

It was a weird tone-deaf miss of the problem, but makes sense with her focusing on coverage now. She doesn't particularly care if something bad happens; it only counts as a negative if people find out about it. Doing a bad thing is only bad if you get caught, and so the only reason Trump has ever done anything wrong is because people leaked he did it!
