Ok, so now that the dust has settled, are Pokémon Sun/Moon the best Pokémon games?

I haven't touched my copy of Sun in a few months but I feel I was throughly satisfied with what it had to offer and I will get back to it when I am done with Zelda. There is something about this game that really keeps you playing and surprising you.

The new Pokémon are really interesting and tied deeply to the region and lore. The guardians are fleshed out and connected to their island, The totem challenges where, well, challenging and actually made me almost lose for the first time (Lurantis can screw herself).

The region is really fun to explore thanks to the rides, I ended up using Stoutland most of the time since I really like to search for hidden treasure. I liked how there was incentives to fight all trainers and how most areas had advanced trainer with unique strategies, perfect for showcasing how deep the game can be in a PvP setting, or to get an edge. The difficulty was much better than previous games, but that may be because I kept switching Pokémon since I wanted to try them all.

The story was actually good and character driven (Surprising since most Pokémon plots are very straightforward and just there), following Lillie and Cosmog and their struggle with their family, if a bit predictable, was well executed. There is character development and is really hard to dislike the cast. The Professor quest and the Kahunas mission was well integrated too. All in all, the setting is really solid.

The music is easily among the best in the series. They have yet to make a bad soundtrack, but this one is filled to the brim with energy and emotion.

There is a looot to this game and the more I keep remembering the more I like it, I just had such a great time exploring Alola, making friends and catching and fighting with Pokémon.

If we ever get the rumored Pokémon Stars I hope its more a sequel than a improved version, I'll love for Alola to get the White 2/Black 2 treatment. Honestly I'll be surprised if this isn't the case.

So, comparing it to the other games, I feel it takes the best of them all and comes out on top. It may be the best entry point for the series, too. Even factoring nostalgia, the game has Alola forms and the return of fan-favorites Red and Blue/Green. If the game has a weakness is that Z-Attacks are kind of meh, other than Z-Belly Drum that is the best.

All in all, I think yes, they are the best Pokémon games.

No, too much handholding and trashy cutscenes.

The world isn't fun to explore, and the post game sucks.

Sun and moon only look good because x and y were trash fires.

Pokemon Snap is the best Pokemon game and they should make Pokemon Snap 2 for the Nintendo Switch!!

Hah no.

I like playing double battles that don't kill the frame rate, thank you.

Gen 2 remakes still Kings

Might be, if they weren't so ugly. So much character is lost in the transition from a 2D sprite overworld to a low detail 3D mess. The battles look good, but I'd still take sprites if I had the choice.

Absolutely not. Sun and Moon, while much better than previous entries (finally the game actually challenges you), still falls flat on a couple of aspects, namely the story (character development of the group is focused SOLELY on the protagonist rather than having real growth), and the lack of a postgame for the 2nd consecutive generation. Region design and exploration is dumbed down to the point of being extremely annoying and cutscenes being quite long only makes this worse.

For me, nothing will ever surpass Generation 5 (inb4HURRDURRPOKEYMANDESIGNS) for how much both games had to offer.

For me, yep. Finally dethroned my favorites HG/SS. There are definitely stuff to complain about like the S.O.S. system or the unskippable cutscenes, but yea, it was refreshing as fuck.

X/Y actually made me think I was finally done with Pokemon, but S/M brought me back in full force. Also Lillie is the best; finally a secondary character I actually give a fuck about.

Nah, I still feel like B/W 2 are much better games. The sheer amount of great content in them puts S/M to shame, though if Pokemon Stars adds a decent post game I'd consider it up there.

Nah, I think Sun/Moon are some of my least favorite Pokemon games actually. The amount of dialogue and story shoved in was ridiculous and actually got annoying. I've never felt burnt out on a Pokemon game but I did with Sun way before the end and basically forced myself to finish.

Probably not. They have some much need quality of life improvements, but I'd say the pacing of the game is so bad it is really a chore to play. Its infuriatingly linear and even on the third island you're still going through goddamn tutorials.

I'd put them behind only B/W2 and Platinum. They're great games with some smart, forward-thinking choices for the series.

The Gen 2 remakes are phenomenal games that nail their art style and are just overflowing with content. It's just that the level curve is so outta whack and I'm used to having tons of Pokemon available now. I can't play those games anymore without the corresponding Drayano mod

I enjoyed it and it's probably my favorite but I have issues, specifically with the story toward the end.

The Aether Foundation opens a rift that releases more Ultra Beasts and sets up a major crisis for Alola. This would have been a cool moment to get you to travel to all the islands battling these powerful foes but nope, the Kahuna's got it I guess. The game also stops caring about the Island Challenge and it just becomes a bonus that you clear it while taking down Lusamine. Also the fact that you don't fight Merged!Lusamine is the biggest missed opportunity. What's the point of fusing with the Pokemon/UB if you can't give her a good punch. They set up a lot of really cool stuff that is underused and wasted.

Personally still Prefer Emerald/Sapphire and Fire Red.

I think Sun/Moon would rank 4th best Pokemon game for me. Too many cut scenes and interruptions making me not want to replay it, heck I couldn't even finish it. Got burn out

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
No, the Game Boy games are still the best. Sun and Moon were good but they still felt like a half-step towards a truly next-gen Pokemon game. Their improved presentation didn't compensate for the reduced scale.

Also the way Sun and Moon handles Mega Stones and Evolution Items is laughable

Want a trade evolution or a Mega?

Well grind the shit out of boring 3v3 battles kid.

Having a chance at finding them on hidden spots like in XYORAS was much better

And Bike>>>Tauros, come at me.

Wild pokemon variety alone killed my enjoyment of the game. I think SuMo had the foundations to be the best title in the series, but as usual, weak amount of new pokemon (90% shown prior to game release), lack of difficulty and post-game, terrible in-game slowdown, and the story was too silly for its own good.

Breaking up the standard gameplay flow is good, but still not enough to do in the game. GF should really learn from Yokai Watch (especially 3) and the plentiful post-game / random events that keep the games exciting for 200+ hours of fun. Pokemon is just the same shit over and over, and with a severely limited wild pokemon list, there isn't even much fun in 'catching them all'.

BW2 - Best Overall Adventure
GSC - Personal Favorite
RBY - Gotta Respect the Foundation
XY - Best Multiplayer, PSS Never Forget

Story wise is still B/W

but gameplay wise Sun/Moon is near perfection

also G/S deserves a nod

B/W was alright since every other game before it didn't do shit w/ its story. But meh, liked S/M's better. Had actual relevant character development (I mean it's Pokemon, but still surprisingly decent) for several characters, and did a good job of balancing the good vibes with the more disturbing elements of the game. Even had a better team in Team Skull.

----

Honestly, it's painful how much untapped potential Pokemon has in numerous aspects other than storytelling.

I'd say they're the second best. 2nd gen remakes still hold the crown but sun and moon did come close I'll give em that much credit.

I thought they were great. Finally stepped into full JRPG style after only flirting with it for a decade and a half. Cut scenes, a plot with an arc beginning to end instead of just randomly popping in.

It really had a lot of new ideas and refined old ones without being unfamiliar or turning people off. It was not perfect but it was definitely more different than the last few entries. I played through all the main generations at least once and this was my favorite in a long time that's for sure overall.

Game balance and mon layout personal issues aside that is. Left me wanting more but in the "feel like there should have been more way" sadly.

The good vibes of the whole setting and adventure though... make it hard to beat.

How people can still enjoy the same shit over and over again is beyond me.
It's not the same over and over again? There are new regions, mechanics, and Pokemon with every entry. Do you just hate all sequels or long running franchises? Do you hate Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Final Fantasy, or Dragon Quest?
