Xbox One Summer Update Preview (Cortana, new Game Library, Win10 app, more)

I've got a Quest for Windows Sonic.

Tried with my Astronomy A50s and not noticing much of a difference. I am guessing the amp is superseding the Software on the Xbox.

Anyone tried using this with wired headphones (connected to the controller for example)?

I believe so. I'm in alpha ring and was in a party last night for a couple hours with no crashing/disconnection.

Yes! I haven't seen many people mention this! I saw the Windows Sonic survey the other day, and as someone who's been hyped to see what Dolby Atmos is about (specifically with Overwatch like Xbox announced at the end of last year), I was excited to get to test out MS' brand of it. I have no idea if I'm hearing anything different. I said as much in the survey and suggested providing a demo in the settings to showcase the difference.

Anyone tried using this with wired headphones (connected to the controller for example)?

I tried my Sennheiser HD 598s and HyperX Cloud Revolver both only plugged directly into the most recent generation of controller. I don't know if that makes a difference.

MS is going to have to spell this out for me. Tell me with what hardware it's most compatible with, tell me what in-game audio settings are generally the best, etc.

For what it's worth, on Windows 10 CU, Windows Sonic doesn't seem to do anything for me and my headphones (HD598's) either. If it's doing anything, I can't tell. Maybe it's bugged, or it only works under certain conditions?

On the other hand, Dolby Atmos I can instantly tell a difference when I switch to that. Unfortunately Dolby Atmos costs $15 on Windows beyond the 30-day trial. I'd like to compare Sonic and Atmos before buying Atmos, but I can't tell if Sonic is even working as intended, if so it makes my decision clear.

I can definitely hear a difference on Xbox. Even the Xbox menu navigation beeps sound different.

edit: I'm not sure if it's more 3D, but it is changing things.

Headphones plugged into the Xbox headset adapter connected to my controller.

Toggling Windows Sonic on makes the menu beeps sound echoey or "wider". Not sure if it helps with games or not.

Gotcha, so not too different from my set up (the rare times I slap on the chatpad). For what it's worth, I believe I instantly heard (and continue to hear, although to lesser effect now that I've become used to it) the "wider" dashboard sounds too. But detecting a difference there isn't very meaningful to me, I want to understand that there's a difference with games. I want that audio demo in the settings I suggested, and a quick way to toggle Windows Sonic in real-time in-game to do my own comparison.

More quick A/V settings in the guide in general would be cool. Maybe that's something MS could let power users opt-in for so it wouldn't clutter the average user's guide.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what MS does with the Insider feedback on Windows Sonic, and I hope Dolby Atmos is dropping soon also.

Wow, forced updates in the middle of your game are still a thing? I thought they fixed that forever ago.

Was just in the middle of a multiplayer game and my Xbox decided "fuck you, it's time to update."

I'll never understand why they did it that way. It's so ass backwards.

Are you in Preview?

What are the circumstances where that happens? I've been in the preview program since the beginning and I've never been interrupted for an OS update.

Man missing snap TV .. would love to be doing laps in one of my racing games while watching the draft.... sucks.

Also is there a way to copy music to the Xbox or play from a USB drive?

Some of my games stutter during music streaming

Yes. If you're in preview, plug in your external media source via USB then go to the File Explorer app. There, you should be able to see your device on the right side pane. Click it, select the files you want, then copy them over.

Be aware you might need VLC to play those files, and I dunno if VLC supports background audio yet.

For all Xbox OS updates - whether in preview or retail - there's a time lag between the time an update is released, and the time where that update becomes mandatory.

For customers in retail, that time lag is usually multiple weeks. Everyone who uses Standby gets it pretty quickly, while everyone else who doesn't use Standby will get non-mandatory prompts to do it sooner.

For example, when you go to turn off your console (not standby), the console will often ask "Hey there's an update available, why not do it now instead of just shutting down your console?"

If you're in preview, that time lag is much shorter - usually just a couple of days. If you use Standby, again you'll get the update pretty quickly without realizing it. But otherwise it's much more likely to see the mandatory update prompt interrupt something.

If you don't want mandatory update prompts interrupting whatever you're doing, you should enable Standby and make sure your console remains connected while in standby.

Ah yes, forgot about not using standby because that's just a crazy decision :p

Wasn't even full shutdown changed recently so that it makes updates upon shutdown, which should help you avoid running into the required time to update?

Man the Alpha update yesterday took FOOORRREEEEEVVVVEEERRRRR.

It was stuck at 88% for like, 20 minutes. I was afraid it was bricked, but eventually it ticked to 89% and then slowly completed.

I was worried.

Lots of new Quests too. And a $.99 Groove month, that's nice.

i never touch my xbox one and yesterday i plugged in controller to charge and the screen went to some static, faulty HDMI port because if i move the connected portion it happens again.

BULLSHIT

I can't decide if HULU app is good or just pretty and colorful

The last update was a mess for me. It was locked up on the OneGuide app and it wouldn't move from that. Nothing would respond.

The Groove pass is nice. Having that for Forza Horzion 3 Hotwheels will be great.

Updated last night, took forever (I turned it on in the middle of the update). When It finished everything was working fine. Log in today, It starts up as if it's brand new, had to re-login and all the profiles that were on my system were no longer there. Then I notice that there is another update! WTF xbox, whats going on?

https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/co...siders_preview_alpha_users_the_build/dh7ka8x/

There was a screw-up with build deployment thanks to them pushing out the public 1704 stability update and the 1705 Beta build near-simultaneously, leading to Beta users getting both pushed out to them (so if your system took the public update after the beta update, it got hit with a factory reset, as that's the only way to downgrade to an earlier build).

After the whole fiasco, my Xbox and external hard drive have been ruined. My external hard drive will no longer connect to my Xbox and I keep getting a 0x8082000d error code which I can't find any information on. What makes things worse is my hard drive was completely unformatted causing me to lose all the games I had downloaded on it.

I also now have a problem where if I plug a USB cord or device into the USB port next to the disk drive, the system will disconnect my controllers and disconnect me from the internet with no way of reconnecting them.

I have contacted Xbox Support and did all the troubleshooting steps and have done multiple hard resets and multiple power cycles, but nothing has worked so far. All that's left is to do a full blown factory reset and delete everything off of my console, but I am scared of doing that as I fear my external hard drive was corrupted and I will lose the few games I currently have downloaded on the system itself. I'm really disappointed after this whole thing has happened.

I sure as hell hope when Scorpio releases they still allow the Xbox voice commands.

Cortana sucks... way too many misses and way too much lag between media requests and responses

Xbox command works perfectly and quickly.

Why the hell is the Amazon video app such a piece of crap?

Compared to a fire TV stick it's ridiculous to use.

Come on Amazon support this platform

The menus and navigation are bad, but what really upsets me is how fast-forward and rewind have three steps, and they're all set to frustration speed. Either I'm going too slow at the first step or way too fast at the next two. I dread using it as much as I can dread using a video streaming app.

Exactly

Thank you. I agree I actual avoid using it which is a shame as my Xbox is my main media center. I have two fire TV sticks for my Amazon streaming sources but in other rooms.

Shocked they are not updating it.. I guess the want to sell more fire sticks

So apparently Windows Sonic for Insider peeps has been broken. The public release works for games, but the Insider build hasn't.

https://twitter.com/steven_wilssens/status/866033608930213888

That explains a lot. Waiting on that update.

And the Dolby Access app is just now available to me, but I get an error when I try to start my 30-day trial.
Well then, that really does explain a lot. The audio glitches in the dashboard have been awful, and there is little to no change in the sound. It sounds like normal simulated surround to me, if not a little worse.

I got the Dolby Atmos trial to work immediately after I posted yesterday with a console restart. However, I don't know if there's glitches with it, or glitches with the Insider build (maybe similar to Windows Sonic), because it sounds kinda tinny in game (unless what I'm hearing is representative of what it should sound like) and it definitely messes up party audio, providing something similar to the dashboard crackle we've been getting w/ Windows Sonic enabled but on your friends' voices. And sometimes party audio just flat out doesn't work with Dolby Atmos for headphones enables.

I'd suggest not impulse buying it blind and even waiting a little while to see if things are ironed out before starting your trials.

Yeah, it's odd that they haven't better communicated that this feature is broken for Insiders. And the software team must've received a bunch of worthless quests or surveys on Windows Sonic - I know that I filled it out with was a massive shrug. The feature pretty much got sent out in the public build without ever properly being tested by Insiders.

Windows Sonic is only broken for Alpha ring users on the 1706 build. Beta and down are still on the public 1705 build at this point, where it works fine (albeit with some issues with non-game audio sometimes).

If you're getting crackly audio in the dashboard, that's actually evidence that it's working, and a known issue you can +1 if you go to report a problem.

It sounds like normal simulated surround to me

It *is* normal simulated surround, for anything that isn't written specifically for it. And given that the spatial audio APIs were only added with the Creator's Update, nothing yet is written using them, so it's just virtualizing the standard 7.1 mix that games are producing.

We'll have to wait for games to support it directly (or start using middleware that's been updated to include it) to get more than that.

arhra, have you seen any word on when this might be fixed for alpha insiders?

No idea. I'm not even sure that is is broken for alpha ring users - one of the PMs on the team responsible for it has been posting to reddit, and he's where I got the bit about it being broken on the 1706 builds, but some alpha ring people are posting on reddit saying they're still on 1705 builds, so it might be that he's just not completely in the loop on what builds are going out publicly to insiders yet, and that's just an issue with internal builds (I certainly don't recall seeing any posts pop up anywhere announcing 1706 builds for alpha).

If you go to Settings -> System -> Console Info and check the OS version there, you should see a string that looks something like: "rs2_release_xbox_1705.170512-1759", which is the build number. If that still reads 1705 it should be working. It should only be broken if that build number has a 1706 in it, but as I said, I think those are only internal builds right now.

Couldn't agree more. I just reverted to Xbox commands today. Cortana is terrible, for instance she will NEVER open my YouTube app, instead she will launch Windows Edge browser and bing search "YouTube" every.damn.time. Uuuuuuber frustrating.
Not only that, she seems to take a smoke break before bothering to respond to play/pause commands during media. The Xbox commands on the hand work flawlessly and I will be pissed if they are not supported some day.

Yes, Steven's the person I posted the Twitter chain of and I see where my reading comprehension failed with one of his tweets about encountering the dashboard crackling = the feature (not) being broken. Sorry about the misinformation on Windows Sonic w/ alpha, guys. And thanks for the correction and the info, arhra. I just must be bad at hearing the difference with the feature enabled if the core of it is working properly for me atm.

Still need to fix all this dashboard and party crackling with both Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos - maybe that's distracted me a bit from hearing the difference, as I'm the kind of person who pulls up the guide very often.

I think this is the thread for it,....

Did you guys try out Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos for headphones yet?

I tried it out and for me Windows Sonic clearly wins it. I get a very bad sounding tinny effect with Atmos. Tried lots of games and it sounds like i am in bathroom with Atmos and with Windows Sonic it sounds fine. I'd say the surround effect is probably slighly better with Atmos but that tinny sound is just bad.

You already have atmos enabled? i thought that feature wasn't available yet until they announce it. Something like we would download an app to learn about atmos which will then enable the atmos codec to work properly.

edit:
Dolby Atmos App
Following its April debut for Windows 10 PCs, the Dolby Access app will be available soon on your Xbox One and Xbox One S. This app enables Dolby Atmos audio, creating sound that flows around you, even overhead, through Dolby Atmos enabled AVRs and sound bars. With an additional store purchase, Dolby Atmos for Headphone enables this same immersive experience on almost any set of headphones.

The experience delivers breakthrough audio that takes you deeper inside your favorite games, movies, and TV shows. For gamers, a robust slate of native Dolby Atmos titles are coming to Xbox One later this year. Additionally, the upmixing capabilities of Dolby Atmos will create a more immersive audio experience for your existing multichannel games.

Thanks to your invaluable feedback, we continue to make improvements and updates. There will be more updates over the coming months; we plan to build and expand Arena on Xbox Live in both the Arena experience and participating titles. Please keep your feedback coming and stay tuned for more.

The terribleness of the Amazon Video app is especially frustrating since the app used to be awesome. It supported LB/RB to instantly skip back/forward by 10 seconds, and general navigation worked fine.

Now the navigation is just awful. I never remember how to make the UI go away, end up hitting B at the worst times popping the "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO STOP PLAYBACK??" dialog box, and it's just so unfriendly to use.

Luckily I have a home-theater PC set up so I just use that + web browser for Amazon Video streaming, but I wish I didn't have to.

I'm ring 3 and i downloaded the Dolby Access app yesterday. I did a write up of my tests yesterday:

https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/6d1rd5/dolby_atmos_vs_windows_sonic_for_headphones/

:)

I am just a standard user and I was able to download the App and the Headphones addition last night.

(Didn't have a chance to test it though)

:O !!!!

I think i tried a couple days ago and my last update was on the 16th. i forget which ring im on, but i know im not on the last one. I'll look at it again and see if i can get the app and change my sound output to Atmos. :)

Let us know if you hear the bathroom sound as well. If it sounds tinny in games. And to think that this app is just a trial, after the trial they want you to pay for it. Well hell no, not like this. Windows Sonic is so much better.

Oh lol,

I had not been in a party yet while having Dolby Atmos enabled. I was testing Atmos with Netflix and my friend starting talked to me, he too sounded like he was in a bathroom. So damn weird.

Good to hear. I tried Sonic for the first time last night and was really impressed.
