A new report from Economic Daily News, via Digitimes, indicates that the iPhone 8 will use a new optical fingerprint sensor technology to enable users to place their fingers directly on the OLED display and have the phone scan the print, as an elegant replacement for the existing Touch ID home button.

The screen ratio will change from 16:9 on iPhone 7 to 18.5:9 (corroborating many other sources) and ‘invisible’ Infrared sensors will unlock enhanced camera and augmented reality features. Apparently, TSMC discussed these upcoming flagship iPhone features at a Taipei symposium.

This latest report from Economic Daily News suggests that the most elegant solution is what Apple is going with. With a virtual home button drawn on the display, users would simply place their fingers on the screen and the optical scanner would authenticate the fingerprint.

They extended the vertical space. Cool. Samsung made a wide choice with the S8, and it is a good idea to follow that model. Who else is doing that right now?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but the problem was never that Apple couldn't get TouchID into the display. The problem was they couldn't get the yield high enough for their supply. There was some friction in the production of integrated sensors, which is why they were creating the rear TouchID units as a backup.

Thank god. Will be waking up at 2:57am to preorder this baby. My iPhone 7 will be getting sold so fast.

all those rumuors are bullshit. Every year there is supply chain constraint rumours. It's like clockwork. No matter what the update is. Then suddenly everything is fine.

If that is the case I'm going to say there will also be a cheaper iPhone with the finger print scanner on the back (like the leaks suggest).

Maybe they will differentiate the iPhone Plus and the standard one with this feature?!

apple will never put the scanner in the back. That leak was also the most obviously fake one of them all. It all spawned from the original source, which was some guy claiming he worked at foxconn that had a picture of the CAD printed out on a piece of paper........right.

The most reliable rumour never really changed. They'll release an updated 7 model as the 7S and 7S+ with mostly similar design, and then an expensive all new iphone 8.

I hope so. The middle rear placement seemed like an ergonomic blunder, especially if the only reason for it was to not move the Apple logo.

It feels great and natural on the Pixel to have it on the back of the phone. Have you tried it?

The problem wasn't that, it's that it was inches lower than where the Pixel has it, rather than where the apple logo goes and your finger falls naturally.

Oh yeah. Rumor also says the screen is now going to be 18.5:9 in aspect ratio, which I welcome.
This update is the new iPhone 4 in terms of changes imo

Unlock by touching anywhere on the screen or just one specific place on the screen? The latter does nothing for me.

Where a virtual circle is displayed, right where TouchID would be.

The whole bottom of the screen would be cool, probably several gens down.

WWDC is going to be weird because if these rumours are all true which the elimination of the home button and all this fingerprint stuff seems all but confirmed at this point, there will be a large chunk of IOS 11 they won't be able to reveal until the phone is revealed if they want to keep things a secret.

The way the OS works will drastically change for the iphone 8 vs the other models. Should be interesting.

This would be big for apple in my opinion. At least personally it makes me much more excited for the phone.

i prefer it on the back of the phone.
thanks but no thanks apple.
ESPECIALLY when your phone is sitting screen up on your desk and you want to unlock/use it without having to pick it up. That's when the back sensor truly shines.

So going forward in 2018 would there be a regular iPhone (regular sized or +) and a deluxe version?
the long term is probably no different than the current set up. Just 2 phones with a bezeless screen, one smaller and one bigger. With a cheaper previous gen model of some kind always being for sale alongside as well. Instead of 4.7/5.5 it'll be 5.8/6.8 or something.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

It's for this reason I've been inclined to believe the rumors from several weeks back that said Apple was going to do something differently this year, and give us a sneak peak of the new iPhone hardware at WWDC.

I'm guessing it would be a largish area on the bottom of the screen.

Thanks. I originally assumed it would be anywhere on the screen. Looks like I jumped the gun. Would still be happy if it was a chunk of the screen. On the plus models, the lower third to half seems to be most natural. I hate cranking my thumb all the way to the bottom because it can cause me to drop the phone if I'm not careful.

I'm surprised this is such a big deal for people, but I'm not an iPhone 7 user...

Can you register multiple user prints?

If they're only now figuring it out I doubt they will be able to produce the tech at scale for a 2017 launch.

It has always been the case that there are iOS features not revealed at WWDC but showing up in the new iPhone. One recent example is 3D Touch with the 6S.
