There are so many of these popping up lately that I'm having trouble keeping track of them all.

Am I remembering right that this is the one with some of the original Wipeout team working on it, and with Designer's Republic contributing some of the in-game branding and design?

Just a couple of guys yes, and yes to DR.

Damn, that....is Wipeout. Like, my only real criticism from this game's initial reveal, was that the cars looked too much like Formula 1 cars, and I hoped that didn't influence the game as a whole. Looks like I had nothing to worry about, as it's just straight up Wipeout now, and it looks amazing. Can't wait.

How hard is it to make one that is less wipeout and more f-zero
This. Redout, Fast RMX, Formula Fusion, and that other new game in development just like these all are much more Wipeout than F-Zero. Adding more motion blur and speed isn't just what makes it F-Zero it's much more different than that

Huh I like what I see there, I won't get it day one but I can definitely see me getting this down the line along with Redout, it's been a while since I played a decent Wipeout-style game :D

On that note though, with the slew of Wipeout clones appearing I wish people would stop saying that they will also scratch that F-Zero itch. Wipeout and F-Zero are quite different beyond being futuristic racers, that's like saying Basketball or Handball and Soccer/Football scratch the same itch because they all feature a ball, teams and scoring into a net :p

In my opinion the Xtreme-G is much closer to F-Zero than Wipeout is. Wipeout and the games it inspired have a focus on strategic usage of items with the driving-physics being very anti-gravity hover focused while F-Zero mostly focuses on pure racing with strategic use of your own energy as your boost and very different, much more direct driving-physics.

I'm surprised that you think they're all 'much more' like Wipeout.

I would place them like this:

More like Wipeout<----------------------------------------------------------->More like F-Zero

<--Formula Fusion----------------Redout-----------Fast RMX--------------------------------->

In other words, Fast RMX seems a fair bit more like F-Zero than Wipeout to me. The two key differences between Wipeout and F-Zero for me are: weapons vs no weapons, and floaty handling vs tight handling. Formula Fusion clearly follows Wipeout gameplay the closest, but both Redout and Fast RMX don't use weapons, so immediately they are both not that much like Wipeout. Redout has floaty, drifty handling, so it certainly moves more like Wipeout, but the sense of speed seems more like F-Zero. Fast RMX doesn't use weapons and has pretty tight handling. Sure, it's still more floaty than F-Zero, but it's surely closer to F-Zero than Wipeout?

Hmm, they must have added stuff to it? Picked it up a while back but it seemed like it still needed a fair bit of work. Will download it again and check it out.

It's currently £15 early access on steam, I'd have to imagine the price will increase when it launches.

F-Zero is extremely retro and arcade in its handling. I'd be surprised if any game comes out with those controls unless they were specifically going after F-Zero fans.

This is actually more like one of the least floaty and more direct handling wipeouts, but it's still modern physics, which is a good thing.

I wouldn't mind an indie futuristic racer (with retro graphics?) that had improved f-zero controls though.

So, it's a lot better than the last time I tried it.

You can modify aspects of your ship in the garage with addons that do all sorts of different things that can affect handling. I'm so glad they got rid of spending points to upgrade the stats of your ship like how it was earlier.

Handling feels a bit like Pulse, which is ... okay, I prefer more floaty controls, heavy on the momentum balancing - keeps things interesting.

Tracks look good and are decent, though post processing is awful in this, it has to be bugged - some really weird noisy effects, like terrabad motion blur (which is a separate option in the settings, and is fine enabled). Looks great when post processing is set to low.

Eagerly awaiting a launch update, they've put in work.

Looks like a quasi-proper current gen Wipeout.
I'm finding this more appealing than omega collection tbh.

Motion blur has been dialed back and improved...

I'm a backer and played a PC beta. It's pure gold for Wipeout fans.

If Sony doesn't plan to release a brand new Wipeout other than the Omega Collection more or less soon I'd suggest them to embrace the PS4 version of Formula Fusion and push it had with marketing. Maybe even letting them to use the Wipeout name in exchange of console exclusivity.

Phat dub-step confirmed. Hopefully this fills the gap for Wipeout and F-Zero.
It's basically a brand new Wipeout with some tweaks made mostly by people who worked in previous Wipeout games. Not related at all with F-Zero, feels like a current-gen Wipeout.

You guys forgot BallisticNG.

Can't wait to dig my teeth into this; backed the Kickstarter and followed development closely but haven't been motivated to play a work-in-progress. So happy we're getting this and Omega Collection nice a close!

Here’s a link to a new compilation trailer

Downloading it now.

Just played a few minutes. It's pretty rough for coming out of Early Access. Most notable are the framerate issues in campaign--apparently the AI vehicles are causing massive framerate drops. I can't keep a steady 60fps on a GTX 1080, which seems pretty ridiculous to me. Sound cuts out during the stutters too. The devs already know about the issue and plan to fix it post-launch, but still unfortunate to see.

The bigger issue long-term, I think, is that I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. The game starts with one campaign and one difficulty level (I think?) unlocked. Okay, cool. Then it asks me to pick a ship configuration. What are these? What's the difference between "panzer" and "stealth bomber" and "blinder"? Okay, pick one at random. Racing now, and there are pickups on the track. Cool. What do they do? Apparently I have weapons and utility items. I try to fire a weapon; nothing seems to happen. Why? At some point in the race it tells me I have DOUBLE BOOST. What does this mean? When I hit the boost button, nothing much seems to happen. How do I even collect boost in the first place? How do I read the boost meter? Do I have boost if it's half-filled? Do I only get boost if it's filled past 100% (which I think shows up as a green bar)? I have health and shield counters. What are these? Do I have consumable health and shield restorative items? How do I use them? Is it the utility button?

I'll dive back in and see if there's another mode that explains a bunch of this, but right now I find the UI confusing.

EDIT: Oh, okay, there's a preview loadout button. I'm not quite sure what the different weapons are but at least I know what I'm supposed to have.

i have a 1080 too and can't get anywhere near 60 in any mode - huge drops everywhere. it runs stably at 30fps with epic preset though, which is weird. has anyone found any fixes?

i would say anyone unsure on performance should probably wait for the demo to drop in a few days.

Ok GAF lets battle it out. Which franchise is better Formula Fursion or Redout.

GRIP. (I do own all 3 & more and both FF & Redout fall short of their ambitions, I'd say)

But I'll have to give FF another try after this update.

I found the item pickups a bit confusing initially too, still don't understand them all that much but I just hopped into a few quick races to check out the handling, maps and performance.

Will be trying out the campaign soon. Would have thought they'd explain it more there but I'm sure I'll pick it up after more races.

I'm not sure why you guys are getting performance issues though, I'm running this at 1440p on ultra (except I toned down post processing a tad) on a 980ti and have no drops racing ai in quick races.

Try turning off v-sync and set the framerate cap to 120?

Grip is high on my wishlist... but did you try redout recently, low-G? They improved it a lot too. I think it's a quality game.

From my few races with this there might be something to the handling. It's direct like pulse but you can also swing your ship around corners much more like an actual drift - like you still have a lot of forward momentum though you can be facing almost horizontal, with some ships anyway. It's pretty cool, I'll be playing more soon.

I've only played Redout within the last 3 weeks and that was in VR. If they updated more recently I would have missed it.

There was a massive patch (really) at the same time as the Neptune DLC, which is great. 12th of May was the patch.

someone explain to me how a great-looking game like this flies entirely under my radar.

I just don't get how that happens.

where's the fanfare for this? This looks legit incredible!!

I wish I had performance that good. The game will literally stutter, as in video AND audio will freeze for fractions of a second every so often. It's even happened when I was well in front of the AI (though I suppose it's possible I was close enough to lap the really slow ones?). Even the menus have issues, every time I return to a menu screen the game locks up for a few seconds. I'll definitely try again tonight after restarting my system, but the half-hour I managed to play last night didn't feel great.

I think I have a better handle on the pickups now. Orange/red ones seem to be weapons, and purple ones seem to be utility. Weapons are determined by loadout, you can't pick up any old weapon. Switching to the blinder loadout and using the Gauss cannon made it much clearer that I was actually using weapons; for some reason when I had the energy bolt mounted it didn't seem to do anything, but that's probably just my inexperience. Still not really sure what the various utility items do but I was concentrating on racing so it didn't really come up. I don't need a tutorial to walk me through all this stuff, but some help screens I can access from the menu would be really helpful. I would also suggest putting the info that's currently hidden behind "preview loadout" right on the ship select screen, it's not like there isn't room for it.

I also finally realized that the counters next to "weapons" and "shields" are actually related to your weapon/utility pickups. Still not really sure how the boost works, but did figure out that "double boost" just means you ran over two boost pads at once, which seems to give you extra boost? That's a neat mechanic if so.

Technical issues aside, it does seem like I could really get into this. Not sure how I feel about the loadout system yet, and I really need to put the music higher in the mix (or maybe the music itself just isn't that good? it certainly doesn't leave much of an impression at current volume levels). But the driving model itself feels pretty good, and that's perhaps the most important part to have nailed.

The audio mix is such that all elements are audible without one taking complete control. You of course are free to do what you like with the volume level sliders 8)

I really think the trailer needs to be recut so that the first 15 seconds is not tDR's stuff. The gameplay is the most important thing and if you don't show that ASAP you risk losing a lot of potential players/buyers. I went to a talk at Steam Dev Days this year about marketing your game and that was one of the biggest takeaways from that specific talk. The average person on Steam watches <10s of the video on a Store page, IIRC.

I say this as someone who is excited for this game and someone who really loves tDR's work, mind.

yeah this is exactly my experience on 1080 too, it's just not playable (and i'm only running at 1920 x 1200). which is a shame because the handling does seem to be great!

could be a pascal driver issue if it runs fine on a 980 ti. guess i'll just wait and see if a fix comes along.

I have no major stutters at all on my 1070 but max settings 1080p cannot hold 60fps always.

may be data access related?

Have a i5 6600k overclocked, 16GB DDR4-3000 & installed to SSD.
