what happened to anime?

People like you stopped watching anime and the people who continued like different things so those things they like became more prevalent.

TLDR: You ruined anime.

Blah blah it's you blah nothing happened blah blah etc....

But y'know, for me personally, I find the shifts over time within specific genres to be a super-interesting topic. Anime genres are extremely quick, laser-focused examples of this -- tracing sci-fi short stories over decades is cool, but it's so much more nebulous than tracing the shifts in mech anime, for example. Because anime is such an insular, self-feeding medium, you can much more easily get a sense of the "genetics" behind a given show, tracing its influences and seeing its impact, if any, on other anime usually within just a few years.

Y'all folks shouldn't ignore the fluidity of anime. It's a very reactionary medium.

I happened to watch Paprika again last night for the first time in about ten years.

This world isn't the same since Satoshi Kon died.

Smart, funny, imaginative films. I miss his work.

Im not sure what's you trying to prove here...??

Oh you mean that these are not "hotblooded boy beats up shit"? yeah, that doesn't make them less shonen.

And just because these are shonen, doesn't mean "hot blooded boy beats up shit" aren't.

Nothing. Just listing my favorite shonen shows. :p

Had never looked before, but it's funny how the only anime I still care about from the 90s came out back-to-back in 97 and 98 (Utena, Bebop, Lain).

Lain and Utena are probably the only anime that I think had a lasting impression and are genuinely timeless.

Bebop is pretty much entirely nostalgia, but it was nostalgia in 1998, not just nostalgia now.

I find it funny when someone questions why shonen anime/manga is still a thing. Shonen isn't a genre you know, it's a demographic that applies boys between 8-18. It's like asking why do people still make T rated video games, or PG rated movies, just doesn't make sense.

Are there any anime today that's like Read or Die? That remains my GOAT OVA series. The 2006 anime of it was a disappointment.

the good thing about not paying attention for a few years is you can watch several good series in a row. There should be a few to discover in "top anime" on myanimelist, which is how I found Mushishi, Ping Pong the animation, Mononoke (tv series not the Ghibli movie), and while I don't consider most shounen anime great the ones on Netflix like One Punch Man, Fate series, etc are decent to pretty good depending on the episode. I also watched Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex late but that was in 2012 or so

I usually copy and paste this when these threads pop up. This makes sense to me.

The great shift in japanes pop culture
http://neojaponisme.com/2011/11/28/t...ture-part-one/

I haven't read most of it but part 5 "The Difficulty of Exporting Marginal Subcultures" might have some answers.
http://neojaponisme.com/2011/12/02/t...ure-part-five/

"In most countries with growing economies, educated upper-middle class consumers still spearhead the consumer market. They have the most disposable income and the most interest in cultural exchange. And those consumers, whether it’s Taiwan or the U.K., are the ones most likely to be willing to follow and purchase foreign cultural items.

Currently, however, the most conspicuous Japanese culture of otaku and yankii represents value sets with little connection to affluent consumers elsewhere. Most men around the world are not wracked by such deep status insecurity that they want to live in a world where chesty two-dimensional 12 year-old girls grovel at their feet and call them big brother. The average university student in Paris is likely to read Murakami Haruki and may listen to a Japanese DJ but not wear silky long cocktail dresses or fake eyelashes from a brand created by a 23 year-old former divorcee hostess with two kids. Overseas consumers remain affluent, educated, and open to Japanese culture, but Japan’s pop culture complex — by increasingly catering to marginal groups (or ignoring global tastes, which is another problem altogether) — is less likely to create products relevant for them."

Well 90s anime die hards tend to long and feel nostalgic for garbage shows like Gundam Wing so maybe it's you.

Like threads like these are never "Why don't people make shows like Utena anymore" and "Why don't they make another Outlaw Star???? That mediocre show was amazing"

For some reason, my favourite anime tend to be from the '90s. I don't think it's a nostalgia thing because a lot of them that I hadn't seen when I was a kid. I think it's the animation quality, as well as weird dark cerebral stuff being in vogue.

Can't leave out Iron Blooded Orphans if we're going to talk about Gundam, that shit ruled. Just a near-constant stream of bloodshed and opportunities to cheer for those brave mech-piloting boys.

I mean that's totally fair. I think Revolutionary Girl Utena is probably the best TV anime ever and Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are up there as well. I think most people got turned off by the early 2000s digital era look - which did suck - but there is still stuff being made now that is great. The one thing you could argue is that the OVA market from the 90s is essentially gone, but whether or not thats actually worth lamenting is debatable.

There ain't been a decent season since like 2013.

Bruh Ping Pong the Animation and Showa Rakugo Genroku Shinjuu are two of the best TV anime of all time...

Nothing really changes, when I first got into anime i remember old farts complaining how their 70s and 80s anime were better and my 90s anime were garbage. And yes Miyazaki was complaining even back then how anime was a mistake and nothing but trash.

Here is an a translated interview with Miyazaki from 1988 complaining about the state of "current" (80s) anime

Here is Miyazaki in 2002 talking about Japanese animation "is facing a dead end" and describing younger film makers as the "copycat generation.

"I wonder why there are so many films that contain so much violence and feature sexual content." "I think there is a chance that the spread of Japanese animation overseas might only lead to embarrassment." - Hayao Miyazaki (2002)

Nostalgia's powerful like that. Every decade, there are probably only 2-3 really great anime though.

There are probably about 20-30 that are good.

The rest are almost assuredly bad or forgettable.

But that's true of any artform. The movie industry (or the game industry) puts out gobs of awful stuff every year but the purpose of that is to eventually strike the one thing that's not.

I haven't watched anything in almost a decade, but saw an episode of one punch man this weekend. Good stuff.

I won't deny that I've been going on a kick of rewatching the stuff that really got me into anime back in the day. Right now, I'm rewatching Kenshin and....maybe I shouldn't have. It's fine, but nowhere near as great as I remember.

YYH is still top tier, though.
