Worst expansion pack or DLC campaign for a good game?

The "Heart of Thorns" expansion pretty much killed off Guild Wars 2 for a lot of people, myself included.

It launched with only four new maps (which were super buggy, confusing and largely on-rails), broken story instances (some, like the last boss, weren't fixed for months), no new group content (dungeons and such) to speak of, a shitload of largely passive horizontal upgrades that arbitrarily locked you out of content until you could grind them out, and tons of features missing (some, like the second set of Legendary Weapons, still aren't done) They replaced the big World vs. World map everyone liked with a new, terribly designed one, added new sub-classes that took way too long to unlock and broke PvP balance (which hurts worse for players who didn't buy in because they couldn't compete with the new overpowered builds), and so much more.

All of that after 9 months of nothing, followed by 6 months of nothing (and if you didn't like raids, it was actually another 9 months). It dialed back so many of the things that made the game unique among MMOs, like abandoning the big, exploration-oriented maps full of dynamic events in favor of maps where there's a single big meta-event that runs at scheduled times (so if you want to play in that map when it's not scheduled, you can't progress very far; it's like standing in line for a ride).

We used to have a GAF guild where 20-30 people would be on at all hours and 50+ on Saturday nights for guild missions, and the OT for the game was pretty active. Last time I played (about a year ago) we had trouble getting more than 10 people ( and 12 is the fewest you should have to get things done comfortably) and the OT goes days or weeks without a post. The game's profits have also been declining regularly since the expansion came out.

Such a shame.

No one said the Bioshock Infinite DLC yet. lol
Preferable to the main game. Or at worst maintaining that status quo, though kinda lame to tie it so tightly to the first game that way.

For DLC I played I think it probably is Arkham City. Kinda been the series Achilles Heel really.

All Arkham Knight DLC was turd-tier except the Batmobiles.

None of it felt like substantial DLC except for the Batgirl one, and that was pretty weak (could've at least had unique moves and gadgets). I thought the individual character minisodes were fine, but not worth marketing as a big thing.

Would've preferred all that effort put into fewer, bigger DLC things

My instinct is to say the CoD map packs in MW2, given how much I dislike CoD MP, but I'm more arguing about the value, not necessarily the quality.

I suppose the worst practice is microtransactions for F2P, which I suppose qualify, in which case Dungeon Keeper takes the cake.

If you're referring to Clash in the Clouds, I agree.

Burial at Sea was better than the main game, although still not brilliant.

CitC mode plays fine, it's just not what you would associate with Bioshock. Plus it's only $4.99 and a toss-in with the season pass. For that price getting a horde/challenge mode and explorable museum isn't awful. While not the finest content Bioshock has offered, it's far from the worst offering, historically.

I'd have to put my vote for pretty much all Batman Arkham games DLC. Some are okay and maybe some really like them but for as much as there is and how good the games are - it's a mystery how mediocre the DLC's are.

Almost no one here is going to discuss it, but Jazz Jackrabbit 2's "The Secret Files" episode included in the namesake reissue has level design that really doesn't keep up with original maps. I can't exactly nail what changed to be frank, but sometimes those levels feel cramped just to start feeling empty in a second.

at last, for christ's sake
Didn't Saboteur introduce a £5 DLC to add nipples to some dancers? I never played the game but surely i do remember the noise coming from such horseshit

Arrival for Mass Effect 2 was kinda flavorless. It's not BAD or anything, and it's still a good idea to play it as it bridges the gap between ME2 and ME3 more coherently than the base games do, but it is kind of insipid compared to the other DLC and the base game.

Oh yeah. When I went back to make sure a character was ready for ME3 I couldn't remember if I'd played this one or not. It left that little impression.

The Red Hood DLC for Arkham Knight was a total waste 10 minutes.

Whatever that shit was called for Dying Light, they removed the best aspect of the game by adding that buggy and by extension removing parkour. Instead of running on rooftops having fun and exploring I was just driving from A to B.

I read that Prince of Persia 2008 - new art style one had DLC which was for the cliff hanger ending of the main game, that sounds terrible. Buy DLC to see the ending. I played the game and certainly didn't bother buying it.

Ooh yeah good one, and in a similar vein I heard Asuras Wrath on ps3 and 360 also did this, still would really like to play through that game someday though, never got around to it way back when.

Worst DLC out of the Season Pass for Borderlands 2, imo

I agree that it was the worst of the bunch. It certainly wasnt as crappy as TPS DLC

Asura's Wrath was worse because it was really the ending of the game. At least PoP 2008 had a neat sequel hook, they just squandered it with the DLC.

Asura's Wrath was Capcom getting away with charging extra for the ending, which is especially bullshit because the DLC is REALLY good.

Warlords of Draenor, no question. The fact they dropped it right in the middle with another expansion a year off...yeeeah, not cool.

My experience with Arkham Knight's season pass taught me a lot, mostly: don't buy them :p Substantial new content every month my ass. It started out ok with the Batgirl expansion, but everything past that was a disappointment. By the time Season of Infamy came out, I'd already moved on from the game. The full price for that thing was pretty much a scam.

It's kinda nuts too because the DLC involves some pretty significant developments, including:

-Shepard destroying a mass relay (thought to be impossible to do before)
-Shepard blowing up an entire solar system, effectively murdering all the people who live in it
-The Reaper fleet at large physically entering the galaxy for the first time in the series

And yet it's all presented almost mundanely. Every time something big happens it's just like "oh, okay". It felt extremely weird. Like BioWare forgot they needed to properly set up ME3 and just banged out something quick in a month.

I think Christmas Chronicles 99 is the worst of the 3 jj2 expansions. Its just a rerelease of Holiday Hare 98 with Lori playable and some user levels tossed in to pad out the content

I wanna give Oblivion:The Horse Armor a shoutout because it was the begining. They tried to sell it as something so godly amazing that you need to have it in your life.

Damn... had no idea the game shat the bed so bad. Enjoyed it quite a bit around launch.

Gotta give my answer to Arkham Knight, so dissapointing :(

Warlords of draenor. Worst wow expansion by a mile

Agreed. Definitely worst expansion.

Such a shame too since the leveling experience was pretty good but then...you just sat around in your Garrison a lot doing stuff and/or Raiding.
But there was a bunch of stuff they messed up or failed to deliver on.

Then it didn't help that it only got two MAJOR content patches.
(And calling one of those major is being really generous.)

Ironically, it brought a ton of people back to the game only to end up worse off than before.

The third expansion which gave you the zombie map Buried. Buried was/is such a letdown especially after the greatness that was Mob of The Dead.

The problem is that none of the developments actually matter, and they also contradict existing backound stuff something ferociously.

If the reapers had a back door relay all this time, why only use it now? And given that shepherd stops it happening at the sacrifice of millions, yet they still turn up a few months down the road anyways? Also, they can't say Mass Effect Relays are indestructible and then have one blown up just by throwing an asteroid at it.

If arrival doesn't happen, literally nothing is changed about the mass effect storyline at all. In fact, if you don't play it, the start of ME3 is pretty much exactly the same - it's a completely skips level, pointless bit of content that doesn't even make sense in the storyline.

Interestingly, the team that made Arrival went on to make Andromeda...

Thankfully I've never purchased a bad DLC, though I rarely buy DLC.

But I allways hear that the DLC for the Batman games is bad and overpriced. Which is a shame since the games are great.

Dragon Age: Origins featured this shitty DLC where you got to try and sack Denerim as Darkspawn, which I guess fulfills someone's weird "What If?" scenario but is otherwise devoid of any interesting content.

You get less abilities and play through some of the least interesting combat imaginable, without any story in a story-driven game (since it doesn't actually take place). Its really bad.

Not even the Darkspawn sword you unlock is worth the price of admission.

Mass Effect 1. Pinnacle Station. A dlc entirely focused on arcade like arenas, with Mass Effect 1's combat. So, so bad. And I even like ME1's combat.

Still think I'm one of about ten people who bought and finished the damn thing.

Warlords of Draenor sunk Blizzard's subscription numbers to the point where they no longer even had the confidence to boast about them in quarterly reports.
