Why there's no refund policy on PSN yet?

With Microsoft and Valve there's a refund policy, a thing I believe it's mandatory nowdays with unpolished games and titles which see further discounts ever and ever (like, I buy this today on Steam, tomorrow the same game is bundled in a 1$ bundle, I can ask for a refund if I meet the right terms).
Sony otherwise doesn't offer any refund, if not the "only-one-in-your-life-as-good-will", which is a bad thing considering how many times their discounted games end in the Plus a couple of days or even during a sale.

I've stopped buying brand new PS4 games (unless I really like the developer) now because of this.

If I can get it on another system, I will.

Fuck their royalties.

Good question. Hoping the new Xbox refunds give Sony the kick in the pants needed to drag 'em into the digital future. I'd buy more games if I knew I was safe from stinkers.

Same, there are several PSN games I would have refunded in under two hours if I had the chance (The Escapists for one, just didn't click with me). Knowing that a digital purchase on PSN gives me no opportunity for resale or refund whatsoever means I'm less likely to take risks on PSN than on other platforms or at retail.

How does Sony benefit from such a system? Be sure to list quantifiable benefits.

Consumers are more likely to buy a game they aren't sure if they'll like if they can easily refund it.

Sony wont be sued in Europe or Australia for violating their consumer laws requiring refunds.

I don't think Sony benefiting is the goal here. A system that lets people refund a purchase under certain restrictions will let people get their money back if a game launches in a terrible state. My guess is that most people want a refund for that reason. It's for the consumer.

Sony wants you to enjoy the games you have and not get out easy the first time you find something questionable in it, like terrible bugs, bad performance, or generally something different from what you expected. It expands your horizons and fills Sonys wallets.

Yeah, but Sony doesn't give two shits about that. That's what the poster meant. If it doesn't make Sony that money, they have no incentive to do it.

There is no point in having a 10 day refund on PSN as by the time you actually downloaded the game you'll already be outside of the eligibility period

Because I need more than 2 hours to even consider a refund............oops, "You've played more than 2 hours of X game, sorry no refund for you".

Its fucking pointless with such a ridiculous time period like that.

If I purchase something from amazon I can get a refund after 29 days ffs.

I'm trying to figure out what trading FFXV for $5 has to do with refunds.

I have a crap game on my account. I'd give away my digital right for it, for monetary compensentation. It's a refund. Since the game is older, I'd accept a smaller refund of 5$. Simple, no?

Sony: We don't think it's a good value for our customers.

Joke aside. I think they could just relax their customer support policy and achieve the same effect. They don't really need a refund system as long as the support can and is willing to manually refund customers.

Similarly, there's games I've enjoyed on PSN that I've finished and I have no desire to play again, and I'd happily give the licences away to friends if I could, or sell them back.

Sony allowing refunds would be like them admitting they've sold you a bad product. That's a loss of face. Honor and shame are huge parts of it.

That moment when you justify not having a refund policy in place by having sympathy for the corporations bottom line. Sony doesn't need to "benefit" from this. This is a consumer friendly policy.

No corporations do. Somehow people see Sony as less of a money hungry corporation than Microsoft when it flat out isn't true. Why would they do anything that affects their bottom line? PS4 is still selling great, they are again dominating in NA. They have no reason to allow refunds, no reason to make it easier. All it will do is make them less money than before so they won't. I don't buy the, you are more likely to buy if you can refund argument. I think any potential increase in purchases will be massively offset by how many demand refunds. Right now they are stuck with a bad game or game they don't like.

Sales 101: new customers is good, returning customers are the best/valued customers.
That coming from someone that worked in sales for a large Dutch company and was top seller in the region in my first year.

We're moving more and more towards a digital future, hell it probably already has overtaken the US in comparison to psychical.
A 2 weeks and under 2 hour of play refund policy isn't a bad idea and customer friendly even (fully automated and all that)

PSN still needs work in it's UI department as well as PlayStation's own policy.
Have to go through hoops to find games under a certain price, a docked menu on the left where you can check all sorts of boxes would be ideal.
PSN ID's is another thing and perhaps region switching without the need for new accounts.

Because first party titles are the crème de la crème and every game is optimized for the PS4, there is no reason to ask for a refund.

On PC half of the time the games won't run or there will be performance problems, so it makes sense to have such a system implemented.

Probably because they perceive no value in doing so and there's not any sort of legal mandate in many places requiring them to offer refunds.

I think it might be because there is no way to revoke a license fully on PSN.
From what I understand even if you some how manage to get a full refund from sony as long as you have the game installed on your console you can still play it just fine, it's just that you can't redownload it.

Because the refund policies have been put in place as a response to a European Court of Justice ruling that only applies to countries in Europe (the ECJ has a wider scope than just the EU AFAIK) burt Valve and MS simply put the rules in place worldwide instead of only limiting it to the mandatory regions. Sony has no refund policy in the US as it is not required by law and they seem to vary their rules by location to get close to the legal minimum (hence why there are refund policies for other English speaking countries but not the US).

In the EU they make you agree that they are providing a service immediately and thus you cannot have a refund. I think the ECJ rejected Valve's interpretation of download games being a service and not a product but evidently Sony is waiting to be taken to court before fixing that...

By the way, since the UK desperately wants to escape the ECJ's influence you can expect the refund policy to be removed in the UK as well.

Better question, why can we still not change our PSN IDs

I've always suspected it's due to some sort of oversight with how the database system for PSN 1.0 (PS3) was designed. Whether it was fixed for PSN 2.0 (PS4) is anybody's guess; it's entirely possible that Sony could implement a PSN ID change system for PS4 users but doesn't want PS3 users to feel like second-class citizens.

For me a bigger problem is why can't I buy a game that I got with PS+. I don't plan on cancelling my subscription anytime soon, but it would suck if I couldn't actually give them money to keep something for good.

They managed to revoke my The Order 1886 license but it meant that I could never buy or redownload the game again

Real question should be why there is no outrage for this?

there should be and force Sony/Playstation hand to implement

I bought a season pass that didn't work with a different region disc and they refused to give me a refund since I "downloaded" it. Pathetic. I've had an account since 2008 and have bought a gazillion number of games and stuff.
