Game Informer's next cover is Assassin's Creed: Origins [Up: All details inside]

Sounds fresh and exciting. Hopefully it turns out well. I mean AC3 was pretty ambitious too and tried many new things but the systems didn't come together well and what we got was a bloated mess of a game at times.

Goddamn, that sounds so. fucking. cool.

Kind of wish I hadn't read it and could have been surprised at Ubi's presser but... I honestly didn't expect to be this impressed!

Gameplay doesn't exist in a vacuum. Even basic/simple/repetitive gameplay can be fun to do with if you enjoy where, when, and why they're happening

Climbing around the landscapes never got old in AC not because of the simple controls or the ease, but because of where you're climbing and exploring.

You're right and thats one thing AC has always nailed right. Diverse settings, something for everyone.

Yeah that's not 'one'. With open world and side activities, I definitely played with her more. The campaign might have been disproportionate but it isn't the disparity you described originally.

The campaign is what counts and Evie isn't a protagonist. She is not the most central to the plot. If you remove her the game still hobbles along, without Jacob it doesn't work. Jacob literally had all the big assassination targets aside from the Evie tutorial mission and Lucy Thorne. Jacob gets an entire sequence to himself and has the most missions in every sequence. She's a Deuteragonist at best. Dual protagonists to me implies equal importance to the plot which isn't the game I played. And I say this preferring Evie to Jacob. The developers preferred Jacob. And it shows.

I will say that it's gonna be trite, dull, and ultimately mar the experience for me when you, I'm sure
inevitably use the naval combat to kill Mark Antony and slip Cleopatra the snake.

Sounding like this will be my first AC since Black Flag. An Egyptian setting is amazing. Hope I snag a Scorpio pre-order on Amazon this Sunday night, this will definitely be one of my first titles on it.

You can no longer one hit enemies that are more powerful than you with your hidden blade
This could end up being really tedious, having played Unity especially.
I hope they know what they are doing, because sponge enemies are a pain in the ass to begin with, but sponge enemies immune to stealth kills? Ew.

Everything else sounds great.

Given the links between Roman Catholicism and Templar's in the Assassin's Creed mythology i would be suprised if this eventuated. It seems more likely that
Cleopatra and Mark Anthony wouod be founding members of the brotherhood
and this game like black flag, would thematically have protagonists that represented
a dying way of life. Fighting for what they believe in, but eventually being overwhelmed by a superior force.

We're splitting hairs here and I really just took exception to your 'one' assessment but Evie is a protagonist by any definition. I'll leave it at that.

Yep. I love the series but AC has never handled 'heavies' in a very satisfying way so I'll be curious to see what that mean she for this game. The Janissaries in Revelations? No thanks.

This sounds more interesting than any previous entry, but I will still wait and see. Played quite a lot of entries in the series, but not really a fan.

The combat needs to be improved. I always enjoy the worlds in these games but I get bored with combat pretty quickly.

I agree. Despite some improvements in Syndicate, it still needs more work. I must admit 90% of the time I'm playing AC it's just exploring the world.

I'm not a massive fan of the series, just played the last two, but I have my eye on this one and I'm excited to see some footage ( but mostly gameplay)

Hmmmm sounds pretty good. Although the last AC game I got hyped for and bought at launch was Assassins Creed 3 and we all know how that turned out....

I'll be keeping my eye on this one at the very least.

Climbing everything is a trend I can get behind. I left the assasins creed series after the first one, but tell me its like zelda and i'll be there day one. The no mini map is also good news.

So they are going to
retcon the origins of the Assassins?

Not necessarily,
they've never said how far back it goes, eariest we know is 450ish BCE, but they were never said to be the first. We've seen a screen shot mentioning Khenut, who lived around 2370BCE

That's a good looking magazine cover but I haven't liked an AC game in over five years and I doubt this will shake things up much to interest me.

Ancient Egypt, so everyone's going to be dark skinned right? ...Right?

Holy goodness at those details - this world building is going to feel completely different! In for it all!

No mention of a jump button tho.....

And I don't like the fact you can't assassinate enemies with a higher level than you. Now it means when you see a high level enemy, instead of having a thrilling sequence where you try to find the right way to sneak up on them for the kill and escape their high level companions, you just avoid them. This probably also means headshotting people is gonna leave humans still alive and running at you with arrows sticking out of their heads *sigh*.

This is my only issue too.

I mean if you sneak up on someone as an assassin and drive a blade into them I don't feel their level should dictate if they die or not. Takes a lot away from the Assassin part of the game in my opinion

We don't know that.
It more likely means you need to weaken your powerful enemy first before going in for the killing blow, with stuff like poison and animals and other skills/tools

As long as they give you reasonable stealth options to deal with all enemies.

Also, why are we spoiler tagging this?

Ancient Egypt, so everyone's going to be dark skinned right? ...Right?

Well, not truly 'ancient' Egyptians, this was only a couple of millennia ago, but regardless the majority of Egyptians throughout time are genetically more or less identical to Egyptians currently living in Egypt, so most people should look that medium skin tone and have broadly 'Arabic' features.

Of course due to Egypt still having control over large areas of northern Africa at that time, Greek and Roman interference, as well as its international trade links, pretty much every civilisation at that time could and should be showing up, especially around major cities with trade.

Hell, I'll give them major props if they actually have some Britons hawking Cornish tin and Welsh gold in the game, and Chinese and Indian merchants selling silks, spices etc. It's amazing how many nations were both actively traveling the world back then and using Egypt as a centre of international commerce, and infact had been for thousands of years already, on and off.

But as I assume you're American and just interested in peoples race and appearances, yes, there should be a lot of 'brown people' if it's in anyway historically accurate, just make sure you look up what Egyptians look like and bare in mind how multicultural the place could be at the time before getting getting angry avout it.

Mind you, I'll also be peeved if they 'white wash' everything, including if they make Greeks and Romans look like Northern European Americans instead of actual Mediterraneans.

All of that sounds good on its own, but I'm not sure about it being an AC game.
The eagle view not highlighting characters, no sprint button, no insta-kill with the hidden blade,...
It sounds like it could have been a completely new IP.
Also I'm not sure I like the fight buttons being shoulder + trigger, especially when you have to press both at the same time.

Very little continuity in AC games nowadays and this is basically a soft reboot so no need to follow previous game at this point

"Nothing is true, everything is permitted". By their own motto they can change everything in their canon and still be consistent. :p

Devs asked the same question. What do legacy features add to the game and gameplay besides being legacy features? What can be kept, what can be changed/Improved/discarded?

IMO, sounds like you're focusing on minor mechanical details that dont really define anything about the game. Except maybe the last one

I like the setting and most of the ideas (well maybe riding camels while shooting arrows like a boss seems to be too much), we'll see about the main character because I disliked all of them after Ezio (I played all mainline entries except for Unity). And please limit the present day stuff to a minimum.

Eagle vision
is for me a central element of AC, even if in the latest episodes it was made too powerful.
But then I'm not even complaining about the changes (except maybe for the controls, but I'll wait for a hands on before worrying too much), as a matter of fact I'm all for new stuff rather than conservative evolutions of the same game. It's just that this new game sounds as close to Far Cry as to Assassin's Creed. And a new IP would have given them even more freedom for creativity.

I liked the Frye twins in Syndicate. As a matter of fact they're the only characters I liked in the serie, never cared about the others, even Ezio.

? Wasn't those the dudes that protected the Mummy's Tomb lol

Because they got it at 4k and stable 30fps within two weeks on the devkit.

Im pretty sure gi wasnt made privy yo either of those specifics given the way they spoke of the them.
They mention that the screens were small and and that scorpio's fps was smoother than the pc dev build, which is well.... yeah..
Not a lot of credibility on that front

Its all we have and doubt they just make stuff up. And you asked why people talked about it.
