Point is that lots of retailers are throwing in stuff to make that system effectively $200. Happening on the Sony side, too. $250 for a console with free controller or $60 game. Heck, I got my 500GB XBone S for $200 straight up in November/December last year. You know this year will be no different.

I lined up to preorder a Xb1 at 500 and there is NO way in hell that I'll line up for the scorpio at 500. 449 was my cut off for me personally. I feel like the mass public will have a 399 cut off. Unless they are going to about 500k of these things and pray they sell, I feel like 499 is a HUGE mistake.

MS has been keeping a very small circle of people who know. People inside MS who worked on it say they dont even know the price or name.

That would be very disappointing it would ruin all the good will generated in the last year. I want one but not at 499.99 it is not worth 100-150 dollar premium over the pro. It needs to be 449.99 or less.
Or, he's saying that to set expectations, so that if Microsoft announces a $399 price point, everybody will lose their shit and pre-order a Scorpio (whatever its name will be).

If Scorpio's $499 then it's that price to bank in on the hardcore gamers that will buy it early. It needs to drop to $399 in 2018 or else its sales will stay low.

This is different from a new console replacing the old one, though, they're not trying to outright replace the Xbox One S and that gives them a lot more wiggle room in the price than if it was a proper new console. It's hard to say what will happen with the NEXT console, but if it were some sort of major break from the One and Scorpio, THAT would absolutely not be more than $399 (barring any weird calamity with the US dollar's value).
